From Villainous Toys to Clothing Wars, Or, Why We Love TWOP's Supernatural Forums

We have to admit we spend an inordinate amount of time on Television Without Pity – but dude, it's for our jobs! We have to keep up with what people are saying about all these CW shows! We adore Demian's recaps of Supernatural episodes – even when we don't agree with his opinions (He hates the Dean!Angst, while we could eat it up with a spoon) we love to read what he has to say. If you haven't read them before, check them out – they're long, but oh so worth it.

But where we really waste -- er, that is to say, invest – the most time is in the Supernatural forums, especially the section called "The Quest." That's where you'll find fanfic, art, games, writing, and other assorted forms of Supernatural-inspired madness.

Among the recent insanity: A Twelve Days of Supernatural carol-writing escapade; a collection of haiku, limericks and some surprisingly moving poetry; caption contests; and a strange, somewhat masochistic game where you take someone's wish for what would happen on the show and twist it in a suitably Kripke-esque fashion.

The twisted genius of the TWOP forum-dwellers really comes out in Text Me: Letters to the Characters. In this thread, fans give voice to some of the undersung players who
make this show great – like the Metallicar, various pieces of clothing, weapons, accessories, villainous toys, and more. The folks who contribute are possibly certifiable -- and endlessly entertaining.

For example, check out the war between the clothing and the dirty socks, featuring John's Leather Jacket, various t-shirts and hoodies, possible demonic possession, fiendish M&Ms, and the sweetest little greyhound t-shirt you ever did meet.

Or jump in at the saga of the Frisky Armadillo, who our faithful Winchester accoutrements try to rescue from the fiendish plans of several possessed kitchen appliances and the evil cymbal monkey.

Or you could check out the introduction of Dean's rosary, a sweet Catholic girl who engages in a tempestuous romance with Dean's mysterious necklace, resulting in little jewelry babies, kidnappings, possessions, and more.

Who are the people writing these short messages, and how do they come up with this stuff? We have no idea – but we hope they don't stop any time soon.

Smallville: What Should They Resolve?

Smallville

Now that our buddies from Smallville have gotten past Christmas, it's time for them to prepare for the 2007. Here's what we think we'd find on their New Year's resolutions lists...

Clark:
- Spend more time with new friends who have similar interests.
- Overcome fear of flying.
- Save world. Lather. Rinse. Repeat.
- Explore spandex. It has potential!

Lex:
- Take over world.
- Neutralize mysterious force that keeps foiling evil plans.
- Expand collection of potentially useful freaks of nature.
- Send Pops on well-deserved vacations, preferably a permanent one.

Lana:
- Learn more about Lex's business dealings.
- Pre-natal yoga.
- Figure out what I want to do with my life. I don't need to be defined by the man I'm with!

Chloe:
- Win Pulitzer.
- Get Jimmy to calm down a bit re: relationship.
- Expose all wrongdoing in Metropolis.
- Win another Pulitzer.

Lois:
- Land job at Daily Planet.
- Get Ollie to open up more.
- Find Shelby.

Jimmy:
- Continue to impress Chloe.
- Get promoted out of humiliating basement job.
- Be nicer to Clark. The poor guy has no life and no skills, so he needs friends. Plus, it would impress Chloe!

Martha:
- Improve educational opportunities for all Kansas children.
- Perfect lemon meringue pie.
- Consider dating again. Maybe join eHarmony?

Lionel:
- Take over world.
- Seduce Martha Kent.
- Cement hold over all nefarious action in Metropolis.
- Send Lex on well-deserved vacation, preferably a permanent one.

What do you think our beloved characters should resolve for the new year?

New Year's Resolutions for the Cast of Veronica Mars

We love the folks on Veronica Mars, but even they'd admit that they have their flaws. Here's what we would expect to see if we could sneak a peek at their New Year's Resolutions:

Veronica:
-Learn to be more trusting
-Learn to use new bugging/tracking software
-Learn to reconcile completely opposing impulses

Logan:
- Make an effort to… You know what? Screw it. Drink more, sleep around, fritter away my inheritance, and forget anything about improving yourself. What good did it do?

Weevil:
-Stay out of trouble
-Aw, crap. Already this year is shot.

Wallace:
-Set aside more time for quiet study
-Kick ass at basketball
-Spend as much time as possible on the sunbathing quad

Mac:
-Spend more time on camera

Piz:
-Get confident!
-Take a chance and ask Veronica out
-Avoid Logan

Parker:
-Take self-defense class
-Ask Veronica where she got her stun gun
-Tell parents to go screw themselves

Keith:
-Avoid married women
-Keep track of what Veronica is up to
-Learn to use new bugging/tracking software

Can you think of anything else Veronica and friends should resolve this year? Share in the comments!

Top Model Tops List

Brooke
America's Next Top Model's Brooke makes Zap2it.com's list of underrated TV stars of 2006. The entertainment news site proclaims, "In a contest where everything is calculated, she was decidedly not." We definitely agree - she was a breath of fresh air in an otherwise cutthroat competition. Homegirl kept it real. But she really should have saved the rapping for another reality show like Making the Band.

Who else made the list? Find out here!

TV Gal Speaks!

TV Gal
It's customary for most TV critics to honor their favorite TV series, actors, moments, quotes. This year is no different. However, our favorite TV critic, Zap2it.com's TV Gal, has set aside some slots on her lists for The CW. Most notably, she honors Veronica Mars (Jason Dohring as Logan Echolls in the Best Character category, Best Show) and Everybody Hates Chris (Best Show).

Check out all her lists for the lowdown on what was hot on the tube this past year:

* Best Characters

The CW Fan of the Week: Supernatural Forever!

The CW Fan of the Week
The CW Fan of the Week: Megan M. from New Jersey

Why The CW? I love The CW because it has my ALL TIME FAVORITE SHOW EVER on it: Supernatural, which has the two HOTTEST guys on earth in it, not to mention they are the BEST actors on TV. Supernatural is also just an amazing show in general, with its storylines and family drama. Simply it is the BEST show ever, I LOVE IT, and it's on the best network ever. The CW also has other awesome shows on it that I love to watch, like Gilmore Girls, One Tree Hill (more hot guys), Smallville, Reba and more.

Another reason is that The CW sets up events in malls where the fans get to meet the actors from its shows and get free T-shirts. We actually met Mouth (Lee Norris) from One Tree Hill, who is sooooo nice and cute. It was just so much fun.

If you were Dawn Ostroff, what would you do? I think Dawn Ostroff is doing an amazing job. Combining two networks to make a brand new one must have been a hard job, but she made it work. I guess the only thing is that I think some shows aren't advertised enough. I see commercials for Smallville all the time, but I barely see any for Supernatural. When I do they are usually small. Same goes for One Tree Hill and some other shows. So really that would be the only thing I would do. Other than that, everything she is doing is terrific.

If you could meet anyone in the world, who would you like to meet? Wow, that's a toughy, but really I would just absolutly LOVE to meet Jared Padalecki (or Jensen Ackles lol). Jared is such an amazing actor. I have loved him since he days as Dean on Gilmore Girls. Not to mention he's one of the hottest guys on earth (the other being Jensen Ackles, of course).

But also I love that fact with his involvment with PETA and his don't wear fur plea. It showed me he didn't just play caring characters on TV but is one himself in real life. Especially since I am a huge animal lover myself, it just made me love him more.

What else do you like to do in your spare time? I play lacrosse; I'm the goalie for my school team. I also snowboard. I love to read. I especially love to hang out with my friends, whether its going to the mall or just chilling at somebody's house.

Anyone you would like to give a shout-out to? I would love to give a shout-out to my best friend in the whole world, Michelle, and my other best friends Emilia, Diane, Karolina, Chris, Kevin, Kyle, Sophie, Kym, Natalia, Jane, Riya, Kristina, Ella, Sam, Natalie and so many more people, including my older brother, Domenic.

Do you have what it takes to be the next Fan of the Week? Tell us why you love The CW, and you could be featured here in the future!

Rumorville: The O.C. Coming to The CW?

Benjamin McKenzie
Word on the street (or more like the Internet) that Fox will say good-bye to The O.C. at the end of this season. It's really a shame because it's rebounded this year with improved storylines and excellent new casting after a horrendous third season.

However, some people believe that the show could succeed once again on another network... for example, The CW. Would you like to see The O.C. on the big green? Do you think it's a good fit for the network? Personally, we think the series is worth saving. Otherwise, where will we get our Ryan fix?!

The Adventures of Snuggle the Bear, Plus a Holiday Treat

In our ongoing quest to find some of the best Supernatural fan art, we've unearthed some awesome creations this week.

First off, a holiday treat: Check out Dragonfly’s awesome fan video, The Carol of Supernatural. It’s well worth the download. We’ve been geeking out over it ever since Kim sent it in. (Thanks, Kim!)

Second, as promised, we direct you to Big Pink’s Bear Hunt, a fabulous photo-comic that takes you on a tour of Supernatural shooting locations in Vancouver and reveals plush toys’ weakness for bad-ass muscle cars.

Some background: Remember Dean’s throwaway line in “Faith” about wanting to hunt the Snuggle Fabric Softener Bear down? Big Pink decided to make that a reality, and combine it with a map of where episodes were shot in the Vancouver area. The process was fraught with peril to both body and ego, Big Pink says: “The looks we got, carrying around a freakin' Snuggle Bear and snapping photos of it in public places, sometimes stopping traffic to do so….”

Big Pink and her trusty driver/location scout JM completed the photo shoot in one day, with the help of “inordinate amounts of sugar and caffeine,” Big Pink said. Among her favorite locations were Save-on-Meats, where the employees happily held the Snuggle in the window beside the pork chops, and the Riverview asylum, which is still used as a mental health facility. “We had a great conversation with the guys filming there (I think the production was 'The Seed'), who showed us how they were making fake graves. Again, JM and I killing ourselves laughing and pointedly not mentioning why I was carrying a Snuggle Bear. Later, JM quite rightly pointed out that I didn't look so out of place hauling around a stuffed toy.”

We asked Big Pink if we could expect another comic soon. “We'll probably do a second one after Season Two's over, though the Supernatural location guys aren't giving us too much to work with yet,” she said. “Snuggle Bear is now sitting on my bed, awaiting her next close up -- I guess she made it out of the wreck okay.”

We can’t wait.

Keep sending in those fan art suggestions to cwsource@gmail.com. Thanks!

Smallville: Gifts That Keep on Giving

7th Heaven: Isn't It Ironic?

7th Heaven
Slate revealed its 10 most-read stories of 2006, and if you scroll down to number 10... you have the e-zine's coverage of 7th Heaven's season finale, 7th Heaven Goes to Heaven.

But as we all now know, the show came back for an 11th season. And you thought the timeless family drama's, er, time had run out! Are you glad it came back? Do you still watch? How do you think this season should end? Perhaps better than last year's did?

Post Your Predictions: OTH Four Years Into the Future

As we reported a few days ago, there's a chance that if OTH gets the Season Five renewal, the characters will pick up their storylines four years into the future (so they'll actually be much closer to their real-life ages). This got us wondering... where do you see the OTH characters four years from now? What will their jobs be? Will they all still live in Tree Hill? Will any of them (besides Nathan and Haley, of course) be married? Who'll still be friends?

Post your OTH future predictions here!

Veronica Mars: Explore the World of Film Noir

We love lots of things about Veronica Mars – the sharp characters, the biting dialogue, the twisty mysteries, the tortured relationships – but one of the things that cemented our love for the show was its unrepentant film-noir attitude. Think about it: Veronica is an outsider living in a bleak world, and nothing can be taken for granted. She deals with femmes (and hommes) fatale, official corruption and an outwardly sunny society that’s got one heck of a dark underbelly.

While Veronica is taking her well-earned vacation (hey, she caught a couple of serial rapists and broke up with her boyfriend in the same week – the girl needs a break), we're sating our film-noir urges with new and classic takes on smart-mouthed outsiders taking on the big, bad world. Check out the following titles to satisfy your bleak mystery cravings, then post your own noir faves in the comments section.

A Battle of the Loises?

Erica Durance
Is there tension between Erica Durance and Kate Bosworth? We didn't think so, but the Blayney Chronicle interviews Erica Durance and dispels any rumors of such a rift anyway. "With the show and the movie, it's two completely different outlooks and timelines," points out Durance, who portrays the small screen's version of the heroine. "You're not going to get any fighting words out of me!" she adds.

Whose Lois Lane do you prefer, Kate's or Erica's? How do you think the show will fare if Clark and Lois kiss this season? With no new Smallville episodes for a while, how are you passing the time?

From Veronica to Victoria

So let's recap. In case you missed our last post on The CW's decision to air the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show 2006, we were a little surprised. In the Tuesday 9/8c timeslot, we've gone from a sassy, smart heroine of a mystery show (Veronica Mars, we miss you!) to women dressed up like angels while Justin Timberlake croons about bringing sexy back (where did it go?). It's a change so jarring we needed to write a snarky blog post just to recover.

Regardless of whether or not you're pro-Victoria's Secret, we've got some pics of the models strutting their stuff to JT's tunes, so check 'em out and let us know if you plan to watch the fashion show tonight. Any takers?

Amy Sherman-Palladino Won't Watch Gilmore Girls

Amy Sherman-Palladino, the chatty, no-holds-barred creator of Gilmore Girls, dished to TVGuide.com about her new FOX comedy.

Of course, what we really wanted to know was what Ms. S-P thinks of Gilmore's Season 7. Certainly she'd have an opinion on Lorelai and Christopher: The Wedding. But she claims she's not watching! We find it hard to believe. How could she resist seeing what the new crew did to her baby?

Regardless of whether or not Amy's tuning in, we found her good-riddance-to-Gilmore comments to Ausiello a little disrespectful to the show (comments like "All those suckers can bite my ass, ladies and gentlemen.") . Hello -- it's not like the series is over. There are still fans watching, and to us, the characters are still real, alive and well. Show a lil' respect, Amy!

Do y'all agree?

The CW Fan of the Week: You're the Inspiration

The CW Fan of the Week
The CW Fan of the Week: Brad O. of Illinois

Why he loves The CW: "Most of the shows they have are the best. My favorite show from The CW is One Tree Hill, with the runner-up being Smallville. I try to watch The CW all I can to help boost its performance, considering it's the best network out there... At first I did not really watch much television - until these two shows came along. But the main reason I love The CW is because it got me thinking about my career. I want to become a television writer, and I'd love to make my own show one day, and I would hopefully like to pitch the idea to The CW. The CW is truly the only thing I look forward to after school on the weekdays."

If he was CW President Dawn Ostroff for a day: "I wouldn't really change anything different that she's doing. Everything is great, and it will just take a little more time to receive ratings like the other networks. The only other thing that I would do is promote the shows more. I barely see any promos and such for Smallville, One Tree Hill, and Supernatural (I don't watch Supernatural), but that's the only thing I'd do differently. One more suggestion: advertise for the new One Tree Hill coming up January 17th, because a bunch of people don't know when it's coming back and they don't know if it's the 17th or the 10th. That would really help. P.S. - I would keep OTH for a 5th season =D!"

If he was stranded on a desert island, what three things would he take with him? "My guitar, the other would be a TV to watch The CW! And the third thing would probably be a big jug of water haha."

His other interests: "Playing the guitar, working out, listening to music and hanging out with friends."

Have any other questions for Brad? Do you want to be the next Fan of the Week? E-mail us at cwsource@gmail.com and tell us why you love The CW!

Veronica Mars: The Cast in Other Roles

Even though Veronica's in reruns for the moment, you can still catch the cast in other roles.

Need to see Kristen Bell? Her latest film, "Pulse," was just released on DVD. Or check out her star turn in the musical remake of the 1936 anti-marijuana propaganda film "Reefer Madness."

Craving an Enrico Colantoni fix? We're partial to his work in "Galaxy Quest", where he plays an alien who has mistaken a cheesy sci-fi show for fact and turns to the actors to save his race from extinction.

Are you missing Duncan now that he's fled to Australia? You can see Teddy Dunn in the remake of "The Manchurian Candidate" with Denzel Washington and Meryl Streep. (We confess, however, that we prefer the
original Frank Sinatra/Angela Lansbury version. Heck, rent them both and compare!)

Mac may not have had much screen time on Veronica Mars this season, but the actress behind her has a long list of screen credits. You can check out Tina Majorino when she was young in "Corrina, Corrina," or see her more recent work in the indie smash "Napoleon Dynamite."

Francis Capra is another cast member who's grown up on screen. He got his start playing opposite Robert DeNiro and Chazz Palminteri in "A Bronx Tale" when he was just 10 years old. More recently, he played a thug in the hysterically profane adrenaline flick "Crank."

Next week, we'll give you suggestions for new and old noir gems to feed your mystery hunger over the holidays.

Smallville: The New Justice League

We can’t get the idea of a new Justice League out of our heads. Yeah, we know they’ve introduced some of the players already, but we can’t help but think of all the possibilities! Would they put together the original 1960 lineup of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman and Martian Manhunter? Or how about second-wave members Green Arrow, Atom, Hawkman, Black Canary, Phantom Stranger, Elongated Man and Red Tornado? Plus, there’s Green Fire, Hawkgirl, Blue Beetle, Huntress, Steel…. The list goes on and on.

Who would you want to see in the League – or would you rather see the focus swing back to that Clark Kent guy we seem to remember this series being about?
