'Nemesis': Friends or Foes, Who Knows?

Smallville
This episode pretty much kicked ass. Clark and Lex, cinematically dirty and disheveled! Former friends sharing recriminations as they fight for their lives! Lex confounding expectations - only to prove himself to be even more duplicitous than we thought! Lana in full-on manipulative evil Luthor mode! Bliss!

What did you think of Clark and Lex’s conversations in the tunnel? Is Lex really evil because Clark turned his back on him, or is he just bad to the bone? We lean towards the latter, although we couldn’t help but sniffle a little when Lex admitted that Clark was the only friend he ever really had. Poor Lex. He did have one hell of a crappy childhood… and adulthood… but we’re not sure that excuses the whole megalomaniacal-attempting-to-take-over-the-world thing. And it’s interesting how things are never really Lex’s fault, isn’t it? As far as he’s concerned, he’s bad because people expect him to be. Trust us, Lex, no one expected you to build an army of meteor freaks. That’s all you.

We liked the way Lex’s hesitation to save Clark mirrored Clark’s moment of hesitation to save Lex last week. We did think Lex was leaving Clark to die, rather than looking for a suitable lever. Were you surprised when he came back? Or do you suspect that Lex has always had a good side yearning to break free?

And what about Lana - she’s taking to the Luthor name pretty well in this episode! She convincingly menaced Lionel in the hospital, and the way she swooped in and coolly snagged Lex’s briefcase from the police? Masterful.

But the best bit of knife-twisting was at the end, when she confessed that she’d thought about bailing on the wedding and blamed it on her feeling that something was wrong with the baby. How could anyone love someone who lied about something that important, she said, batting her eyes, acting innocent. Lex was forced to swallow his panic and keep pretending everything was fine, that he had nothing to do with faking the pregnancy. Granted, a slightly healthier response would have been for Lana to tell Lex she knew about the pregnancy, then walk out on him, but where’s the fun in that?

What did you think? Were the scenes between Clark and Lex in the tunnel everything you hoped? Were you more surprised by the reveal that Lex lied about his kidnapper’s husband, or that Lex came back to help Clark? Do you agree with Lana’s decision to stay with Lex but let him twist in the wind? Is hope really both Clark’s greatest strength and most dangerous weakness, as Martha said?

I've just recently started watching the show, so I don't know what the character Lana was like before Season 6, but I LIKE Lana! I don't see why everyone is tired of her, and I REALLY wish that she and Clark would get back together. Enough said.

Bring back the Smallville before Hypnotic. I started watching the series when I saw the rerun of the pilot. The Clark-Lana chemistry is something I have never seen on TV. The Clark-Lex relationship of a fresh take of a tired, dated farce. I like the character of Lana very much and I watch Smallville week after week because I like all the characters. The cast is great together.

Lose the millstone. I mean Lana. For good. Please. I'm begging you. The WORLD is begging you...return SV to the great show it can be.

I hope the writers would really WOW the viewers in Season 7. Lex truly needs to be EVIL & INSANE. Nemesis was a regression. Instead of Lex becoming an evil genius, he is a tragic, sympathetic abused son of Lionel in Nemesis. In order to have a really good fight, the polarization of good and evil has to be absolute. Season 6 has been very problematic. Green Arrow was an amoral abuser who turned superhero. How could you cheer for Green Arrow when he was a victimizer as a teenager and how does it make sense he could be a hero later. The first half of Season 5 before Hypnotic gave Smallville the most consistent high ratings. The show lost over a million viewers after Hypnotic. Please have respect for your audience and give them: 1. The rise of Clark, 2. Coupling of Lana and Clark without angst, 3, The rise of evil Lex with no turning back 4. No more Lionel going back and forth as good/bad character. Lionel should be EVIL and that’s that. 5. Chloe needs to be a trusted sidekick and not the only hero of the bunch. Try not to lose another million viewers at the end of Season 7. Lastly, please writers do not drag this story out anymore. Your viewers are getting very tick off.

pretty good episode. i especially loved the scene between CK/LL at the end of the episode. god, i could just feel the electricity (sparks) in the air between these two characters. it's pretty clear CK/LL will always have the hots for each other.

i also enjoyed seeing lana's 'dark side' with lex. i love it that lana deals with lex on his level and fights fire with fire. i'm sure as an actor, KK loves the character shift/change.

i also think TW has been doing a great job. CK is truly becoming the future man-of-steele. he has definitely grown as an actor since 'judging amy'. LOL. hope there is life for him after smallville even though his film choices thus far have been questionable.

and, as usual, i love MR. great actor/acting. who knew lex luthor could be soooo sexy?!?!? MR just needs to be more selective on his film projects, however. i understand his need/desire to do comedy (films) but IMHO he first needs to establish himself as a dramatic actor on film, selecting good solid roles. he's established himself as a dramatic actor on tv but these media (tv/film) are two different beasts. i really hope he reconsiders film scripts for more dramatic roles. i would welcome seeing him in tv comedy. and, of course, i would LOVE to see him on stage. MR: please do B'way!

This was a great episode. Clark and Lex...Lex and Clark...the relationship that should be at the very heart of the show. The most fascinating, and important dynamic there is. And unfortunately, the most neglected.

Lana was awesome too, being pushed by her recent victimization to use dark means to get the answers she seeks. It was great. But I do believe that the show needs to acknowledge just how far Lana has slid down the rabbit hole.

TW, MR and KK were all amazing. Great performances.

i liked this episode...lana has to play her role in this relationship with lex to c how much he knows or what it is he is up to...Lex is evil i believe he only saved clark just cuz he still has a feelin theres more to CK..REMEMBER HE KNEW about the rod or pipe he used against clark....Lex may let his prototype out on clark...unless he has other plans for his clones...all the actors are playing their roles extremely excellent.. so will the physicians death ever be found out by lana? how is lex makin these super human freaks..with clarks blood? or meteor rocks

The episode was okay. It wasn't the best, but it definitely wasn't the worst.

IMHO, though, they should've had these episodes earlier and left the Green Arrow, Justice stuff to the end of the season. The season began well and it's running out of steam. Hopefully the noir episode and the rest up the ante a bit and save this from becoming a trainwreck.

The scene of Lana finding Clark after he came out of mine was amazing. The chemistry between these two actors is electric and haunting. The way they looked at each other communicated so much tenderness and deep feelings. I felt a surprising emotional reaction watching them. I was watching this with my family and we agreed this was an impressive episode with a great cast. All the actors connect so well with each other. Clark-Lana-Lex, the writers are taking their story to a point of no return. This is actually a much more sophisticated show than the intended target audience would suggest.

Lana really rock tonight. KK is showing that she has a real chance at a film career. I think the usual Clark and Lex dance is confusing. Lex saving Clark and Clark saving Lex prevents the story from pushing forward. Let Lex be the son of a bitch and let the fight began. Regarding this site, it is the same two-three people posting the same anti-Lana rant week after week. We get it, Clark should be with Chloe. It is only a show, none of it is real..okay.

I was totally not surprised that Lex came back; what did surprise me was Clark begging Lex not to leave him because it was whiny and not the brave demeanor we expect from Clark and Clark being so bitchy to Lex by ragging on him that Lana was going to leave him at the alter. That was not the heroic thing to say or do and Clark was wrong to open his mouth about that, especially when both he and Lex might die; it was unnecessarily hurtful. Like something Lana would say. Like the many cruel cutting things she has said to Clark to hurt him and make clear she wants Lex not Clark until the total retcon that was Promise.

Again, Lana had ample time to back out and I have no sympathy for her at all. Now don;t misunderstand me; I think Kristen Kreuk was very convincing as evil nasty Lana and it's always been more interesting to see her as anything other than the Pink Princess; but that does not in any way excuse her behavior. It was bad enough that Lana endangered Chloe so she could learn Clark's secret but threatening to kill an injured man or leaving your husband to die when you could save him are nasty evil things, the kinds of things we expect from Lex and Lionel; they are not suddenly OKAY just because pretty Lana does them. They are still all kinds of wrong and inexcusable and in very sharp contrast to the way Clark and Chloe behaved. Lana was suitably evil but there was still too much of her and not enough of Clark and Lex together which has become rare these days. And not enough Chloe but then there rarely is.

I was not at all surprised that Lex lied about the husband. It is well to remember that Lex has been lying and sneaking around with his secret projects since season one when he bought Cadmus Labs and hired Professor Hamilton. Even when he seemed to be struggling with right and wrong and appeared to be trying to befriend Lex, he was already succumbing to his upbringing and that is not Clark's fault. Martha is right; it's good that Clark has hope for people but that very Supermanly aspect of his personality is also a great weakness which enemies can take advantage of. Clark is not responsible for Lex's slide into evil even thoguh this episode did paint a somewhat sympathetic portrait of Lex, especially, again, after watching the repulsive Clana groping, who wouldn't feel sorry for the guy. It made me angry just as in Promise. I doubt that is what the writers intended but they screwed up again on this point.

Hopefully this is what will soon make Clark come to his senses and see Lana in her all too human not at all nice light. It's taken way too long and compromised the series integrity to wade through six years of Saint Lana. It's time to end it and if they don't, Smallville has already alienated too many viewers. They can't afford to lose any more.

Overall this episode was better than expected but the Clana dragged it down at the end.

Furthermore, and I cannot emphasise this enough, just as in the horrible Promise, Clark letting this awful girl paw him while they stood close was unforgivable. I thought the writers might have understood why Promise was wrong from start to finish and this is it. The hero DOES NOT mack on another man's bride and I don't care what the circumatnces are. He does NOT kiss her, he does NOT touch her, her does NOT make plans to help her run away from the man she has repeatedly said she wanted to marry. This was more of the same and again, inexcusable. The hero, especially now that he is fully an adult, cannot behave like this. He knows better and if Lana continues to bring out the worst in him, as she always has, then it's way past time to reveal her for what she truly is. Bring that on right now! She is not a martyr, she is not sad little girl forced into a loveless marriage. She chose this life and she deserves to be mired in it since she refused to listen to Clark and Chloe when they tried to warn her. Life in the lap of luxury, trips to Paris to get the wedding gown, with Lex ready to worship her was fun and now she has to pay the price. But really, she was the one who asked the Luthors to cover up her killing her last boyfriend's murder so she knew deep down exactly what she was getting into. Tough, Lana; you asked for it.

But that was a good point in all this, that Clark and Chloe both know she was going to let Lex die and it was again a sharp contrast to Clark and Chloe both who, despite the fact that both of them have every reason to be at odds with Lex and no reason to help him, nontheless went to bat to save him if they could. I have no doubt Chloe was ready to lead the charge into the tunnels herself if she had to and since it was her who had been coordinating the effort to rescue Clark, it was Chloe who should have gone to him first to see if he's okay, she who should have called the viewer's attention to his bandage and so saved us all from another round of appalling Clana. Clana has no place here; it's done and most of the audience is so nauseated by it they're leaving in droves. Promise ruined it for a majority of fans and more Clana is making it worse; ratings were the worst ever for this ep, which makes clear fans despise the Clana and Lanaville and the unheroic Clark we get when it's the focus of an episode.

Now for the good, Clark saved Lex at the end in a scene reminiscent of a save in Jitters. It was a good continuity reference all the way back to season one and this IS what we expect from the hero.

I loved Clark and Lex in the tunnels. And as to Lex's mutant army...well, if Lana has taught Lex anything, it's the value of ALWAYS having a back-up boyfriend. And now Lex has one in silver hot-pants!

DarkLana is okay but GoneForeverLana would be even better :)

The episode was okay. Not enough Lex/Clark and way too much Lana.

I did like the contrast of Lex choosing to save Clark while Lana chose to let Lex die in the tunnels. Hopefully Clark and Chloe will finally acknowledge that the pink princess has more than her share of faults.

I really wish the PTB would stop thinking that Clark and Lana making moon eyes and groping each other (in front of Lex, Lana's husband, no less!) is cute, romantic, bittersweet. It isn't. It makes Clark look like a pathetic, amoral, obsessed jerk. It makes Lex Luthor look like a pathetic, desperate moron. And it makes Lana look like a cheating hussy.

Lana. Dark? Lana's darkness waffles like her "love" for Clark, Lex, Jason, Whitney,.... There is no way I can believe that she can outsmart anyone, much less Lionel or Lex.

I am sick and tired of Lana, Clana, Clexana. This is a show about Clark Kent's journey to Superman, Lex Luthor's journey to Superman's archenemy, not the many loves/stalkers/boyfriends/husbands of Lana Lang. Lana Lang should have been a distant memory by now. She is single handedly dragging down all the characters - Lex, Clark, Chloe, Lionel, Martha. Please just make her go away.

most times i come to this blog,is for water cooler chat but instead it,s become "i hate lana this i wish she would go that"Why don't all you lana haters start your own page, and just shut up already!

I loved Lana in this episode, if only she can have such character and spunk in every episode, she rocked in the end when she tried to make Lex feel guilty. I was disappointed by Clark's and Lex's conversation in the tunnel though I am glad that Clark told him that Lana was going to leave him on their wedding day, that really seemed to have shocked Lex. Clark rocked last night. I do not understand why Cloe did not tell Clark that Lana had a hunch about his secret, what is up with that!!! Anyway last night's epi was HOT!!!! Viewers want to see more episodes like last night's.

It was a good episode. Liked Clark and Lex in a cave.

Lana. She just needs to go. Lana being all dark would have got a reaction out of me if I cared for the character but I just don't give a fuck what happens to her.

I agree it was a good episode. I also agree that Lana going dark never made me say woo hoo. They want us to like her again really really bad. But it's hard to. I liked the end she tried to see if she could make Lex feel guilty. But I still can't like her. I mean she wanted Lex to die so she could have revenge and...his money. Then when he didn't die..she went crawling back.Plus the actress just pulls off bad...well badly. It's her worse prerformance really. I miss cute Lana, her with Lex ruined both him and her really.

Plus how many endings do we need where we find out that Lex really did something that he claimed he didn't do ? WE GET IT, HE'S BAD!!! Otherwise yes it was one of the strongest episodes of the season. Was nice seeing Lex and Clark as, well...almost friends. Next week looks silly though, why do we need Smallville, Casablanca style ?

Good episode.

As for Lana going dark, I wish I could say it was great, but the truth is I have just given up on her character. She's so freaking inconsistent that by next week, she'll return to her vicitim mode. I truly hope she won't be back next season. She's not needed on the show anymore.
