Smallville: More Guest Stars? Talk to the Hand!

Dean Cain & Helen Slater on Smallville

Earlier we noted that Dean Cain, a former Superman himself, will be guest-starring on Smallville. He'll be a baddie in the fourth episode of the upcoming season. But it's not as if you needed to hear it from us. Check out this story, this one and this one for more details. Of course, these aren't all of the stories out there. Google "Dean Cain Smallville" to get even more scoop.

Media outlets jumped all over this one, even though the Lois & Clark alum's resume includes clunkers like Hope & Faith and some forgettable small-screen movies. We guess entertainment writers just love it when TV worlds collide. It's makes for an easy day at the office with all the puns and plays on words they can use for headlines. But how many times do we have to read "Former Superman Flies to Smallville" before our eyes bleed?

In other homage to the past, the show's inviting former Supergirl Helen Slater to come on as Cousin Kara's aunt, which means... drumroll... she is also Clark's real mother.

Girl, please. You may have superpowers, but you will never be Martha Kent.

For those of you who don't know who Helen Slater is, don't feel foolish. The Razzie-nominated, cinematic disaster that was Supergirl was released in 1984, much earlier than probably a good number of Smallville fans were even born.

Which is what makes Smallville so great. It introduces the Superman mythology to a whole new generation. But it's a generation that might not understand or care for these latest stunt casting tactics.

Yeah, we're a little cranky these days when it comes to our favorite show about heroes. The other day we actually caught an old episode, and we found ourselves yearning for seasons past. Sure, it was a lame, "freak-of-the-week" episode, but it was about Clark. And Lex.

But now it's about all these new characters and storylines that don't seem to have anything to do with Clark's growth as a superhero. You feel us? Or are we beating a dead horse here?

Sorry--The chemistry between Lana & Clark is what MAKES this show. Get rid of Lana and Clark & it goes downhill. You want to see more of Clark on his growth to Superman....rent one of the 100 or so Superman movies already out there.

Less SOAP & more SUPERMAN action please. Watch this, Clark will end up in General Hospital. Common producer, wake up !!!

I'm just jumping onto the banwagon for Smallville which I've become totally additcted to. I started watching half way through last season and have been staying up all hours to watch re-runs, but I might just have to buy the first 6 episodes to get caught up. Love the show especially the cast. keep up the good work.

I want to see Clark have more fun with flash. They go on a road trip together cause Clark is tracking down them alien bad guys & he ask flash to come wit. Along the way Clark is "Maing Up" without the big red stone.

they always down played clark even in the comics, it always was develope a story and superman came in at the last min to save to day. he is not like batman where he is involed in the story all the way through.

they have to fill 40 mins some how.

Clark really isnt a person you could base a interesting story around with out drastically changing his character its was usely some one clark knew or was going to save.

Umm no offence or anything butt..i dont agree on all of what was said in the comments already ..i honestly dont ..on all of them on some i may butt its kinda a little rude and not really even right...sorry.

Carying on...i(as a HUGE Smallville fan..)i AM really actually looking forward to the 7th season of my most favorite show,"Smallville",i hope it ends up the way i would maybe hope and want it to end up as..soo i do Hope so..for the other fans who also that may hope the same as me of what it will be like..soo Let's go Smallville, Season 7!wooo hooooo! woot woot!

im glad about the creation of smallville did you know that on the very same network there's a stupid little tv cartoon thats making superman like he was created by "making the most dangerous elements in the universe in his DNA"? how stupid is that? us kids need a guide line to the real superman not some cheap rip-off thats a "loose cannon on the edge" to throw into the hole with all the other remakes of shows like scooby-doo (wich was a good show until now)or pokemon (wich was never a good show period) and the even stupider remake of loony toons into loonaticks.

Seriously, I don't want to see some blond nitwit make Clark look even MORE incompetent than he already is.

As for that nasty critter Lana returning, do we really need to show him being her little stupid doggy again where he excuses the fact she framed a man for murder.

No wonder the guy next to me at Comic Con said he quit watching SV because it was EMBARRASSING!

i'm fine about whatever guest they put on so long as it ADDS to the development and persona of clark kent as the future man of steel. just hope the producers and writers keep this in mind when they vette storylines.

I totally agree that this show has lost its focus from Clark and Lex. I really wish their relationship with each other and as individual characters were given more airtime.

I'd be a lot more excited about Kara coming to Smallville if I hadn't just gone through s6.

The original premise of the Smallville was the journeys of Clark Kent to Superman and Lex Luthor to Superman's arch-nemesis. Instead we've gotten Lanaville where every Kryptonian, man, woman and child wants to possess/protect/kill Lana Lang.

I was really excited about Green Arrow last year... up until Smallville turned into Arrowville. Suddenly Lex and Green Arrow were enemies; Lex and Ollie had a history together; and Ollie was pushing Clark into action without knowing/understanding a thing about him (Clark saved the world from Fine and Zod; Clark stopped a nuclear missile; Clark tracking and getting rid of the Zoners). Clark was relegated to the B and C plots on his own show!

When Ollie left, I had hope that the story would now focus on Clark and Lex. No - instead we got Lanaville x 100. Who does Lana love? Is Lana going to marry Lex? Is Lana pregnant? Will Lana have more sex with Lex? Who is stalking Lana? Will Lana find out Clark's secret? How will Lana trick Martha, Clark, and Chloe to find out Clark's secret? How will Lana outwit Lex and Lionel?

In an effort to victimize Lana more and absolve her of any wrongdoing, the Lexana relationship became a farce with Lex somehow tricking Lana into thinking she was pregnant. Oh, poor little pink princess Lana, tricked by the big bad Lex. Forget that she told Lex she loved him, slept with him, blackmailed Dr. Gohl for him, went along with Level 33.1, moved in with and agreed to marry Lex, and hated all things Kryptonian. Please. Just how stupid do you think we are, TPTB? You really thought we wouldn't notice?

Lex Luthor is a suave, charming, smart, good-looking billionaire. He doesn't need a lame, half-baked plan to trick some small town teenager into marrying him. He can get/charm any woman he wants.

What the PTB did to Clark's character this past season is criminal. His entire raison d'etre in the latter half of the season was to worship Lana Lang. Zoners to catch? Meteor mutants to stop? Level 33.1 to investigate? Help the JL? Who cares - Lana Lang is getting married!!! The writers have systematically sabotaged Clark's character to try to justify Lana/KK's continued presence on the show. They've turned him into a whiny, selfish, mopey, angry, obsessed jerk who accuses/manhandles first and asks questions later. Yuck.

In s6 we also got "Lois Lane, the General's daughter", Sooperreporter! Look over there! Is it a muffin peddler? Is it a stripper? No, it's "Lois Lane", Sooperreporter! This "Lois" is the worst Lois Lane ever. She is a mockery of everything iconic Lois Lane stands for. Chloe, the real DP reporter, is now the resident Lana/"Lois"/Clark/Jimmy cheerleader and meteor freak. Who came up with that drivel?

So excuse me if I'm not thrilled that cousin Kara will show up in s7. She has all of Clark's powers and she can fly! She'll save Lex and Lex will take an interest in her. It's Karaville where old plots are recycled with shiny new characters. As for Clark? The sabotaging/marginalizing of Clark looks like it will continue in s7. He is relegated to playing babysitter and learning to fly with Kara's help. And I thought that Clark's reluctance to fly was due to his rejection of his Kryptonian heritage. No, he just needed cousin Kara to show him the ropes.

As Karaville mercifully comes to an end, it will be the return of Lanaville once again when Lana comes back from the dead surrounded by beautiful white light. Smallville will rejoice, birds will sing, flowers will bloom and Clark and Lex will resume their pissing contest over her.

TPTB, enough with the shiny new characters that do nothing but stall/sabotage/marginalize the main characters' journeys. Get back to focusing on the core four: Clark, Lex, Chloe and Lana*. That is the show I want to see.

*Btw, Lana has reached her destiny - she is the girl that gets left behind.

My concern is that the guest stars don't overshadow the main cast members who made the show a hit to begin with. I want to see what happens with Clark, Chloe, Lex and Lana. The show has always had a lot of guest stars and I am excited about Dean Cain and Helen Slater. I am more worried about Kara and the writers putting too much emphasis on her story and ignoring the core four, Clark, Lex, Chloe and Lana. No matter how cool a guest star, no gimmick can replace development of the main cast members. They're the ones who keep people coming back. TW and MR have amazing chemistry. It shouldn't be sidelined.

While I love the guest-stars (I'm pretty pumped about Dean and Helen), I agree that they shouldn't overshadow the main characters, which is the danger of what happened with Green Arrow in S6 and what could potentionally happen in S7 with Kara.

I'm okay with guest-stars pushing the main characters to their destiny (which is why I think Lynda Carter worked), as long as they don't take over the show and we forget who the show is supposed to be about.

Don't get me wrong-I like a cool guest star from time to time but yes, Clark, the star of the show and his journey as he grows, matures and actually becomes the full blown hero, has been sadly missing from a long time now.

A progression of guest stars from the awful Erica Durance, the worst "Lois" ever who regretably became a regular to Green Arrow who took over the first half of last season, to Kara, the cousin who can fly when Clark can't (outrageous and a huge disappointment!) not to mention the tendencey to make too much about Lana Lang and who wants her, loves her, stalks her, mopes about her has made this show about everything BUT Clark Kent growing up into his Supermanly future self.

In season five we had Clark sleeping with the horrible Lana who hates all things different or alien, and then last season we had to watch in horror as Clark philandered his way along with the always-wanting-to cheat-with-her-back-up-love interest-Lana, revealing his sense of morality has gone right down hill from first season when he refused to interefere in the Lana-Whitney relationship when Whitney's dad being sick made Lana angry because she wasnt; getting all the attention. Where is that Clark and why did he disappear?

I think Tom Welling is the best Clark ever but he's been marginalized in his own show all too often and when he is there, he gets drek like the worst episode ever, Promise in which everyone was out of character and the plot was a total 180 from everything the season had been leading up to in the first half.

Why they continue to bring in guest stars and offensive plots like Crimson and Priomise to save their failing ratings is a complete mystery. ALl they really have to do is bring back Clark, the character the show is supposed to be about and his arch-nemisis Lex and show us that story. And it should never be about Lana, Lana, Lana nor should Clark and Lex have their falling out over this self-centered, manipulative little witch of a girl. That has made this show completely ridiculous.

Clark should have been morrally correct long ago and stayed that way and instead of Kara, yet another shiny guest star with abilities that Clark should have developed two years ago, we should be getting Clark comepleting his journey and getting his head screwed on straight and that would include calling Lana on her underhanded, backstabbing ways and dumping her at long last.

Al Gough has screwed this up totally. I want Clark the hero who's experimenting with flight becasue he knows he can do it and NOT because his much younger cousin can do it already. There's something very wrong when you mess up the Superman tale so horribly. It's supposed to be an heroic tale; it's not that tough to get it right.

This show was supposed to be about Clark Kent's journey and now that we are getting near the end that should be made clearer than ever. Instead we got Greenarrowville and now I'm sure we are going to get Karasville, with Clark relegated to just a guest star in his own show. This is beyond stupid! I used to love Smallville but now I'm frustrated and disappointed.
The sad thing is that SV had the potential to be a great show and now it looks as if they don’t know what to do with it anymore. What a waste!

I totally agree. I love the show, always will, but I feel like it's lost it's way. The whole purpose, I thought, was for Clark Kent to be finding his way to becoming the Man of Steel. And, part of that journey was about Lex Luthor. That relationship was pivotal in his reaching the inevital 'Superman' destination. TW and MR have amazing screen chemistry together, and they are what made the show a hit. Moving back from that has only hindered the show, IMO. And, these new 'stars' only take away from what SHOULD be the entire focus of the show...Clark.

Claire? Just WORD to ya post. Sure I'm only watching for Chloe now, but at the beginning what bought me to this shoow was Clark. His journey to becoming Superman. I recognize that the main characters are or should be Clark and Lex and how they get to their iconic selves. I just wish the PTB would recognize the problem with the show. Like I said many times they need to stop adding on new characters and start focusing the show back to what it should be about. Clark and Lex SHOULD NOT be marginalized because the idiots in charge keep adding new people who don't need to be there.

And I won't be the least surprised if season 7 turned into Karaville like S6 turned into GreenArrowville then into Lanaville. I'm not looking forward to it. With Annette gone, I was really hoping that they would keep the cast as is and not add more people but I was wrong. Seriously, the Goughlar need to learn that adding new ppl will not make up for craptacular writing. If anything it takes viewers AWAY from the show. IDIOTS.

I think everyone is overreacting. We know Dean is in one episode, and we know Slater is in one. Is there more?. Who knows. But there are 20 more episodes without them. We don't know anything. If anything, bringing on Kara, and Slater being Clark's mother, actually seems connected to Clark and to Clark's journey as Superman. So far, from everything I have heard, season 7 is shaping up to be a good one. Better than last year.

Yeah, this is looking like an even worse repeat of last season where there was barely any news about Clark or Lex due to the Green Arrow (and to a lesser extent, Jimmy Olson) frenzy, and therefore barely any Clark or Lex (especially outside of Lexana) in most of the episodes. We've still got a little 2 months to go and I'm already tired of hearing about the stunt casting. Color me extremely meh about season 7 right now.

I think the change took place around Season 4. Remember how Lana and her problematic possession took center stage at times over Clark's search for the stones that everyone conveniently forgot about after that meteor smooshed Jason? Season 5 was more about Lana and Lex and that ship than anything else. Even Jonathan's death got pushed aside for that big black triangle from space. Then I stopped watching...

Totally agree - I watch the show for Clark and Lex and they don't get nearly enough scenes together.

TESTIFY SISTER!!!

I keep wondering...when the heck did this show STOP being about Clark Kent? And Lex Luthor? When did it become OK to turn Clark into a supporting character for the freaking Green Arrow? And can there be any doubts at all that Clark's primary function this coming season will be all supporting the storyline of the new Supergirl? Its totally nuts.

If TPTB are really so bored of writing for Clark and Lex, and so bankrupt of storylines for them outside of lame-o love triangles with Lana Lang, then its really time to fold up the tents, and put this show to bed while still allowing the lead characters to have a bit of dignity.

And all the stunt casting in the world won't make up for weak writing.

I'll bet Tom Welling is kicking himself that he complained about his tough filming schedule in Season 1 of Smallville. Now he's got a bit part in his own show.
Jensen and Jared should take heed - the CW curse of superfluous and sensation-seeking characters has already started to infect Supernatural!
