Walt finishes off the rest of The 33 Newsroom Anti-bacterial soap

llllllll.jpg

Swine Flu seems to be on everyone's mind. And whether you think it is getting over-hyped or not, we seem to be talking about it a lot in The 33 Newsroom... Today we talked about it at length in our afternoon meeting (where the news director leads a discussion about last night's newscast, and day's stories.)

We spent about 35 minutes talking about all the different angles we could cover.... Rebecca Miller even brought in her special hand sanitizer to show us -- it has moisturizer in it and it is made here in North Texas. It seems like everyone is trying to get a hold of the hand sanitizer-- and Walt (hoping to stay Swine Flu free) finished off the gigantic supply we have on the news desk.

So... Barry left the afternoon meeting to rush out and cover the daily news conference on the Swine Flu. Since he's our health reporter he's basically had the Swine Flu gig all week....

He got back from the conference at the exact same time Lewisville ISD called Amanda, and told her that they were closing down all the campuses. That's when we had a little impromptu pow-wow at Mark's desk (he's the Monday - Friday producer) and Barry was rushed back out the door- to Lewisville to talk to parents and students.

The goal today was to cover the swine flu, without overreacting or scaring anyone. I hope anyone who watched the newscast Friday night, got that impression.

Middle Class Pain

They are the latest victims of the recesson: the middle class.  Low income advocates tell me they are seeing increasing numbers of middle class now needing assistance.  It's across the board...shelter, food, job placement.  It's hitting Dallas and advocates expect it to get worse before it gets better.

Did Dallas Cowboys follow Severe Weather Policies in Collapse?

The investigation is far from over -- but legal experts anticipate there will be questions about the way the Cowboys responded to the approaching severe weather before the bubble came down, injuring 12 people -- 3 of them seriously.

There was a 25 minute warning from the National Weather Service, but Jerry Jones says the team got "little warning". No one was ushered out of the flexible structure building despite the incoming storm. The structure was built to withstand 90 mph winds, so perhaps many inside felt it was a safe place to be. It will be interesting to watch the safety questions play out. Tell me what you think -- were the Cowboys too cavalier about the approaching storm?

Back to School--Barry Carpenter

Swine Flu. Scary last week, not so scary this week. Last week Forth Worth ISD cancelled all classes through at least May 11th. Today, they decided that it's safe to go back to class on Friday. All of this after the CDC proclaimed the flu was mild and no more severe than the seasonal flu. Tarrant County health officials and Fort Worth ISD officials say if they had to do it all over again, they wouldn't change a thing. The kids come first, better safe than sorry. How can you argue with that? If you want to, feel free below.

Sick and still studying

I'd never really thought about it until I stumbled upon this story. How do kids who are in the hospital for months keep up with their schoolwork? As it turns out, the class comes to them. Children's Medical Center in Dallas has a program where hospital teachers crack the books with students in their hospital room. The goal is to make sure the kids stay on track to move on or graduate. I met a Dallas ISD hospital teacher and a fifteen year old girl diagnosed with Myeloid Leukemia. She'll be in and out of the hospital for up to six months, but she won't fall behind her classmates. The day we dropped by to shoot the story she was studying geometry. The girl is from a town near Sherman, but she's now a DISD student. I hope her hospital room studies go well and that she gets to go home soon.

Economy Beer

I had a really interesting story today...Recession beer sales. The president of a popular alcohol chain may have said it best today. He said, " Alcohol sales are not immune to the recession, alcohol sales are resistant to the recession." While the stats show many Americans still buy alcohol when times are tough, they appear to be buying cheaper alcohol.

Economy Beer

Perhaps the most interesting statistic I found out today had to do with beer containers. A representative from 7-Eleven told me that the chain studies the type of bottles that consumers buy. According to them, consumers tend to purchase glass bottles when hanging with friends or going out, but cans when they tend to stay home. Hhmm.

That's what I expected to hear from drivers today, after telling them gas prices went up $.04 overnight and $.10 in the past week.

I got grumbling for sure, but no angry threatens to boycott the pumps or promises to shop for a Prius.

What do think? Nervous for summer? Thinking about revamping your travel plans? Taking it stride?  Let me know.

Manny Gone For 50 Games

As a San Francisco Giants fan, I celebrate. I mean, I really don't like the Dodgers. But as a sports fan, I can't believe these guys still put themselves in a position to get busted for performance enhancing drugs. Today, I interviewed a father who's son committed suicide after he stopped using steroids. He's an amazing guy. He's formed a foundation to spread the word that performance enhancing drugs are dangerous. He's going to visit each MLB park this summer and hold clinics, complete with baseball players. As a kid, I really, really looked up to my baseball stars. I was highly influenced by them. I hope the kids who take part in his clinics get that same feeling.

The Right Choice

I had the pleasure of spending the day at A. Maceo Smith High School in Dallas today. I had a great time meeting all the students. Brandon Silveria came to tell them about the consequences of drinking and driving. He made the mistake 20 years ago and his life is forever changed. I thought it took a lot of courage to get up and admit that you've made a major mistake like that.

Here are some interesting facts from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse:

Also, In 2006 more males than females 12 to 20 years old reported current alcohol consumption, binge drinking, and heavy drinking.

More in the "Dirk Drama"

Some say there is an expensive ring, a baby ... all of it makes for very interesting news, but for the soft-spoken German basketball player it has to be a very difficult time. By all accounts, Dirk Nowitzki is a nice and normal fellow, who can play one vicious round of ball. Perhaps, he was just unlucky in love and came across a gold digger, whose story he bought hook, line and sinker.

In any case, sometimes you feel for the person you are covering and this happens to be one of those times for me. Who hasn't been made a fool while under the spell of the "love bug"? But, you do wonder with all that fame and fortune couldn't Dirk have "bought" some good advice, or at least hired a private investigator a whole lot sooner?

Dirk: Good or Bad Saturday Night?

Feel distracted? Imagine how Dirk Nowitzki must feel. A woman he apparently has a relationship with was arrested at his Dallas home. Police say she has more than one name and is wanted for various transgressions. Game three is Saturday, and all the talk is about Dirk. Will he play well? Is he distracted? Will the team rally around him? We'll find out tomorrow, but I interviewed a peformance expert and he says great professional athletes have something in common. Concentration. Blocking out off field or court distractions. Hank Aaron did it. Barry Bonds did it. Kobe Bryant did it. Lets hope my expert is right, and Dirk can turn urmoil into triumph.

Going Back In Time

On many occasions, I've said out loud and to no one in particular, "I'd love to go back to schoool."  (For the record, I'm talking college here, not kindergarten.)

Today made me rethink that.  I spoke with TCU students turned graduates overnight and they are now officially entering a highly competitive job market.  Several have spent months looking with no luck.  One new grad who secured a job in November is thankful, saying the position wouldn't be available now.

It's just one reason to be glad I'm not in school anymore.  That...and I'm not smart enough!

But, now here's the question -- if you recognized the person on the billboard as your friend, neighbor or even a relative, would you make the call?

Baghdad: U.S. Soldier Turns Gun On Fellow Troops

The story just could not be any more sad. A soldier believed to be stressed out, killed five fellow soldiers in a clinic for soldiers suffering from the stresses of war. Here in north Texas, the VA hospital has a clinic full of soldiers suffering from, and seeking help for, Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. Dr. Lia Thomas says the Department of Defense and VA system is working hard to help the soldiers. Soldiers are schooled about PTSD before, during and after deployment. The names of the dead have not been released. I hope this is the last sad story I do this week.

I met a 2nd generation owner tonight, who all but grew up at the dealership. He played on the cars before he was old enough to work and has been there full time since 1978. He worries mostly for his small staff, some of whom have been there for decades.

He is one of thousands watching the clock tick. Good luck.

Pilow Face: The New Must Have Look

They call it the Pillow Face look. Plump, youthful. Think grape, not raisin. It's all the rage in Hollywood. I interviewed a north Texas plastic surgeon who says that fat fillers comprise the vast majority of his business. People fly in from all over the world to have fat moved from one part of the body only to have it placed into their cheeks, chins and other thinned out placed on the face. The idea is to fill it up rather than stretch it out. I met a 42 year old woman who does not look 42. She looks younger than she did when she was 38 and her cheeks were as rosy as when she was in her 20's. I'm told it's not very invasive, but there is one downside: Looking thirtyish when you are fortyish will cost you about nine thousandish.

How Much Would You Pay For Healthcare?

I've heard there is a recession. But if you talk to doctors who offer concierge service, things are good. Okay, if not good, better than many of them expected. That's because concierge service can set you back about 5K or more, depending on the package. It may seem expensive, and it is, but everyone is making hard choices. Some choose health over golf memberships, season tickets and so on. Even people who can afford concierge service have had to cut back, just not on their health care.

P.s. Did you know dogs sweat through bellies and paws?

Swing of Pain

Golf. No contact, no pushing, no shoving. Please be quiet. So serene. But many people who golf, suffer the same injury, back pain. Baylor-Plano has a program called Back to Golf. A physical therapist runs you through a bunch of core exercises. If you've already hurt your back, it can help you get better. If you haven't, it can help reduce the chance of injury. That golf swing is simply not made for the human back. All that core training may also help your game. Me? I haven't golfed in nine years and not because of the swing of pain. My game was painful to watch.

More Car Dealerships are Dumped!

It was interesting being inside Friendly Chevrolet today -- on one of the worst days in recent memory for GM dealerships. The owner was smiling and the staff seemed upbeat -- that's because this dealership with a long history and large sales volume was safe.

But, I'm sure inside others that were cut -- it was a bleak picture. Although, those dealers aren't talking, at least not many in North Texas. It's too bad we couldn't hear more from those that didn't have their contracts renewed. Their customers would probably like to hear their plans.

A shiny new Ford dealership opened in Garland. Odd, especially when you consider General Motors and Chrysler dealers have been told to close. An economics professor told me the big three need to close some dealerships because there are simply too many. Competing against yourself is not a good business plan. Fewer, larger dealers is the key. The CEO of Ford was there for the grand opening. He expects Ford to be profitable in 2011. The road back has been a long and bumpy one. For the sake of all of those who work in the car industry, let's hope he's right.

Summer Intern Orientation Day

main pic.jpg
New interns and Assistant News Director Rob
Jim, Walt, Larissa -- the early years

So interning is pretty much essential when you want a job in tv news. A journalism degree is great, but most news directors expect you to have some hands on experience to get a job. Today our new group of interns showed up for orientation. They're getting degrees all over North Texas (& Oklahoma) at schools like  UNT, SMU, UTD, UTA.  And I'm really looking forward to having them around because it never hurts to have some extra help writing, making phone calls and having voices out in the field.

and.. having interns around... had the rest of us talking about where we interned.

Assistant News Director Rob first interned at KSAT in San Antonio. He went on to produce in the same market, plus here in Dallas, manage in Washington D.C. before coming back here. So pretty much he's had a lot of experience. But it all started in San Antonio. I asked him if he ever messed up and got yelled at but he told me no. I think he's lying because he tends to cause trouble around our newsroom now.

Jim Grimes (weekend anchor) interned here in Dallas but at WFAA. He's been in this business for a while... and no one is still there that was there when he interned. I tried to get some juicy secrets on News 8 from him, but he won't tell me anything.

And Walt Maciborski interned at ABC News in LA. This is unusual because most people intern in smaller markets, and in local news.... not network stations. He also got paid A LOT (around $17 dollars an hour) which is a TON for a news internship. But ... that's Walt.

I'm a weekend producer-- I interned in Austin, because I went to UT. (hook 'em) I worked, for free, at KXAN and KEYE.  I really loved both internships. I worked the morning shift at KXAN- which was tricky because I also worked at the student station. So I basically worked at the student station until 10 pm... took a nap on the college newsroom couch... and then went to the station at 3:30am. BLEH but it was worth it.

Reliving Quake Memories

I can't believe I didn't feel this morning's earthquake. Neither did my 3 dogs, who slept through all 3.3 of it (Still tired from swimming at the lake yesterday, I guess)!

I'm okay with having missed out, though. The 7+ earthquake I went through in 1989 was enough for me. I was living in San Francisco and was at the World Series game at Candlestick when it hit. I remember grown men crying, all sexes screaming and seeing people run from the ballpark under rippling concrete in the parking lot.

My friend's mom hitched us a ride in the back of a pickup (We traded our just purchased beer, popcorn and peanuts to a guy who'd driven in from some state I can't remember. He didn't drink the beer, though. No worries)! He drove us back to the city and we toured the financial district. Much of the power was out, which was strange in and of itself. There were parts of buildings collapsed, near-countless dumpsters on fire, people just wandering aimlessly.  Very surreal.

I didn't get home to my folks' house for 3 days because of collapsed and crowded roads. It's an experience I will never forget. I'm glad today's produced no known damage or injuries, just a few memories for me.  I can easily live with that.

Do you believe the woman behind "Dirk's Drama"?

The woman at the center of the Dirk scandal has finally broken her silence. Cristal Taylor talked to the DMN from her jail in Beaumont, saying she is pregnant with Dirk's baby. Listening to the interview, at times you might believe what Taylor is ssaying. Her voice cracks and she sobs softly.

But then, there's the assertion that the two met during a "random, wrong number phone call". What! -- how would that go? "Sorry I was trying to call Jim. Well, this is Dirk. Really, Dirk the ball player. Ya, that's me". That is just a little hard to believe. I think it got a few laughs when I mentioned it in the newsroom.

Taylor claims she still loves Dirk with all her heart and was never after his vast fortune. She said she would love him if he only had 2-cents. 2-cents or 50 million, only Taylor knows the truth.

We do thank the Dallas Morning News for allowing us access to the interview. So if you want to hear the entire interview, check out dallasnews.com.

The Miracle Microphone

Picture 002.jpgI was producing when the Cowboy's bubble collapsed. It was pretty wild because who would have thought that would ever happen?! Not me... But especially not Paul Riggs.

Riggs was the photographer inside the bubble when it collapsed. You've probably seen his video. He left the camera rolling the entire time he was running for his life. (You can still check it out on our website  http://tinyurl.com/r8p9qp )

Riggs has been shooting, waaay longer than I've even been in the news business and he says it is the first time he's ever had to run that fast.

AND when he was running more bad news-- he lost the microphone on his camera. The thing costs around 3 thousand dollars! Of course everyone was just glad Riggs made it out okay so no one was really upset.

The whole thing went down about a month ago....

MIRACULOUSLY! Yesterday we got a phone call from Cowboys PR. Someone digging through the Cowboy rubble found Rigg's mic! The News Director called it miracle! Riggs showed off the mic in our afternoon meeting.

And the final surprise-- He put some new batteries in it & TOUCHDOWN... (pardon the pun) the mic works!

Piano Injuries

Yes, you read correctly.  If you play the piano, chances are your body may be suffering down the road.  Eri Yoshimura, a Doctoral Candidate in Piano Performance at the University of North Texas, is researching piano-related injuries.  UNT is one of the only Music Schools in the country that offers their students a "Music and Medicine" area of concentration.  Turns out there are many health occupational risks in the music industry.

Yoshimura just completed her third study on piano-related injuries.  In this particular study, she uses motion-capture cameras and sensors on keyboards to collect the data.  The result is computer-generated animation.  The equipment that Yoshimura and the research team at UNT are using is very much like what was used to create "Gollum" in the movie Lord of the Rings.

Her data shows the pain is not caused by how much time one spends playing, but rather the size of the players hands in relation to the keyboard.  Pianists with smaller hands have a very hard time reaching the octave key.  They end up cheating the music and in the process contorting their bodies.

Yoshimura is currently applying for a grant to study piano related injuries in people ages 11-26.

Sorry, Mom & Dad.

I feel just a little like an under-achiever after spending the day with the owner of Crandall Brothers Lawn Service.

He is 18 and hasn't graduated high school. He plans to rake in about $50,000 this year, employing his friends to mow lawns.

His mom is most proud. I repeat. Sorry, Mom & Dad!

Meet 33 News Photographer: Anchor Walt Maciborski

waltoncamera.JPGMost people realize anchors do a lot more than just read the news. They report stories, make community appearances & help write the show.

Walt has another, special talent. He's a photographer. Most of the pictures you see on this website, were taken by him. He took the first pictures at the Rangers opening game, today he was at the Byron Nelson Golf tournament, and this weekend he's going to take pictures at the Cowboys Cheerleading try-outs.

Walt picked up photography when he was an anchor in Austin. He didn't have a lot of extra money to decorate his home, so he decided to take his own pictures and decorate with them. Several years later, he now gets to post his pictures, for everyone to see. If you like them shoot him an email. walt.maciborski@the33tv.com He doesn't even realize i'm writing this, so he'd be surprised to get the compliment :)

Will Astros be the slump buster Ian Kinsler needs?

The Rangers begin the Lone Star Series in Houston against the Astros to kickoff another year of interleague play.  If the Silver Boot means anything to you, Ranger fans will be happy to hear they've had possession of it in 4 of the last 5 years.

The Ranger looking forward to this series the most is Ian Kinsler.  He's currently mired in a 3-for-25 slump but he morphs into Ty Cobb when he plays the Astros.  In 15 career games against Houston, Kinsler has hit safely in each game and that includeds multi hit games in nine of those.

We'll have highlights of the game from Minute Maid Park tonight on The 33 News.

"My kid doesn't drink" -- ya, right!

Graduation and prom is here -- and every parent is convinced that their kid isn't going to drink. Police say wake up. It happens ALOT and it can mean to bad things. Police are stepping up enforcement, but kids say it doesn't matter -- they will find a way to get the booze.

So, the only real solution -- in this reporter's opinion -- is to make sure your teen is smart enough to say no. Easier said than done. We've all been there.

Vanity Contacts

This story is always an eye opener for me. I am always surprised that more people are not aware that you have to have a licensed professional issue you contact lenses, even if cosmetic. Maybe I'm just protective of my eyes. An eye doctor once told me, " Don't be cheap when it come to your eyes." He may have been right.

Where is the Backpack?

Typical newsrooms have photographers and reporters. But more and more newsrooms are getting what are called "Backpack Journalists" That means the reporter IS ALSO the photographer.

blog2.JPGWe have 3 backpack journalists at the 33 News. Our newest reporters are Dan X and Holly. They have extremely strong news backgrounds.

Thumbnail image for blog1.JPGThey both used to report for newspapers and are training to make their debut on TV sometime early next week. They also have experience shooting video, but it wasn't quite like this.

Here they have the top of the line equipment.

blog4.JPGThey're editing on Final Cut, on brand new Macs. They've got awesome new Sony cameras. They'll be able to finish their stories in the field, and feed them back to the newsroom from their laptops. I talked to both of them about making the switch from print, to TV.

blog3.JPGThey are both taking it really seriously- and are excited to show off their stories to an entirely new, fresh audience.

And they do NOT REALLY carry backpacks. I asked.

Cowboy Cheerleaders

Wow! What a day. Well, I have never been to an event quite like this. There were over seven hundred women at the competition. I must say most of the women had their acts together.
Many of them came to the competition with some major professional accomplishments as well.

The competition will continue tomorrow with the semi finals. The next stage will of course the finals. By that stage the seven hundred women should be down to less than one hundred.

Water Ridealong

As we enjoy Memorial Day weekend a lot of people will be headed to pools and even lakes. Its a great time to talk about water safety. Game wardens will be all over the lakes making sure boaters stay safe and keep alcohol consumption to a minimum.

Boaters Galore -- It is Nice to see!

What a terrific sight today at Grapevine Lake. It was so crowded you could barely move and that is welcome news to marina businesses that have been struggling. Maybe it is a sign that this will be a good summer for those merchants. No doubt, they will be keeping their fingers crossed, hoping Independence Day will be equally lucrative.

Here is my "64-cents"!

OK, so what would you pay to speed up that dreaded rush hour commute? Did you say your right arm? .. well, keep it intact because TXDOT officials have a better idea.

How about toll lanes on publicly-funded highways? That is what is happening with the new DFW Connector in the Grapevine corridor. The massive 24-lane highway, when complete, will also feature 4 toll lanes. For 16-cents a mile you can hop on and go. Note: there will only be 4 miles of toll lane in each direction, just part of the 14 mile stretch.

I don't know about you, but for about the price of a can of pop (yes, I said that. I am from Kansas) -- OK, soda ... you can put the pedal to the metal and cruise 50 miles an hour during peak traffic. Count me and my "64-cents" in!

Teen of Pain

I did a story today about teenage girls who injure themselves on purpose. It used to be called self-abuse, self-mutilation. They've toned down the name by simply calling it self-injury. Girls, sometimes as early as elementary school start cutting themselves. They sometimes burn and bruise. The counselor I interviewed considers it such a problem that she formed what she believes is the only self-injury support group in the metroplex. The girl we interviewed says she could fill two groups with just the kids she knows who cut at school. They both say they self-injure because the physical pain is easier to handle than the emotional pain. For some, it may be a painful story to watch.

Some days you get Lucky.

Yes, that's with a capital "L".

I had what's called a "Beat Day" today. When my Assistant News Director offered it to me at our afternoon meeting, I thought he asked me if I would like a "Beat Down" today. I answered, "No", then quickly changed my mind when it sunk in. It wasn't pretty. I think I was actually begging to get my "Beat Day" back.

ANYWAY, the moral of the story is I didn't turn a piece for our newscast tonight, instead focused on researching future stories and working to set them up.

It was a most productive day, (thank you, Rob) and you'll get to see the results soon hopefully, but that doesn't mean I don't still need your help. (Read yesterday's blog)

Seriously, help. I want to hear from you. Oops, was I begging again?

"Kissed With Strawberry Vinaigrette!?"

greenz1.jpgMost of us work 1pm-10pm every day. That is what is called a nightside schedule. And that means our schedule bridges dinner time. And that means someone picks up dinner. And that someone is almost always me.

So after our 5:30 meeting where we discuss very important things, such as what to lead with, how the Dallas Mayor is reacting to a hot button issue, or breaking news like a bus hijacking, we then get into an argument about what is for dinner.

Our newsroom is located in the middle of nothing delicious, by that I mean all that's around us is fast food. We normally eat at A. Sonic, B. Taco Bell or C. Whataburger. I like Sonic best because I normally get a GIANT lo-cal strawberry limeade. Not all of my co-workers' habits are so healthy :)

So yesterday Becky and Amanda decided to encourage everyone to go "green" with our eating. Meaning get a healthy salad @ Greenz in Uptown. This conversation did not bode well with everyone.

Thumbnail image for greenz.jpgBecky: "I love their salads they are soooo good and healthy"

Assistant News Director Rob: "it says 'Kissed with strawberry vinaigrette?!' yeah I don't think so."

This conversation normally takes approximately 15 minutes depending on how hungry we are.

To conclude we split up, Becky and Amanda went to Greenz... I made a special trip all the way to the Chili's on Northwest Highway where I picked carnivorous options, hamburgers. ... And french fries. Not so healthy. But super delicious.

Note: We all ate Greenz today. And it was really good too.

More Tough Questions for DISD

You don't have to look far to see that some Dallas schools are very troubled, but there are the "shining stars" -- the learning centers and magnets, where students excel and succeed. You don't hear as much about these schools, but you may now.

Superintendent Michael Hinojosa and a majority of the board support a plan to cut these schools -- to trim the best. They say it's necessary because of a federal law that says schools must be funded equally. At stake: millions of dollars in federal funding.

But, here's the rub -- teachers and parents of the magnets and learning centers say isn't it a better choice to increase funding to the other schools, rather than cut the schools that are doing a good job educating kids? They make a valid point. Raise up everyone!

You can't grow money, so this funding has to come from somewhere. But at the same time the district is wielding the axe on these magnets, it is adding jobs at headquarters. That really has people asking, what is up? I think we haven't heard the last of this yet.

Yes it is Friday, but it is my Wednesday

Everyone is in a good mood because it is Friday. I am a weekend producer, therefore it is not my Friday, It is my Wednesday. I have to be be happy for different reasons.

Here is the top 5 list.

TOP 5 REASONS: To Be Happy, even though it is my Wednesday

5. My Double Monitor & New Computer!

mark.jpgThis week the news director and tech director gave me a SECOND MONITOR! Why is this exciting? Because I need MULTIPLE windows up at all times. I need to watch video, write stories, send tweets (FOLLOW the33news :) ) , read press releases, follow breaking news, and read AP alerts all from ONE COMPUTER! It is stressful. But at least now I have more space to do it. Our main producer Mark also got double monitors. He is featured in the picture.

4. The AC is back ON

It went down earlier this week.

ac monster.JPGThe monster you see above is what was providing air. It made a loud annoying hollowing sound. I'm glad it is gone.

3. Becky's Forecast!

Clear & Sunny! And that means more time outside. Hello Lewisville Lake!

Rebecca Miller Forecast

2. Presidential Appetite

five guys.jpgMr. Obama seems to have similar cravings as our news room (see my previous blog) I have never been to Five Guys Burgers in D.C. But our assistant news director and news director both worked in D.C. before coming to Dallas. Assistant News Director Rob says "one of the better burgers I've ever had." AND BEHOLD: there are 2 Five Guys in North Texas! One in the Galleria and one in Southlake Towne Square. And yes, we are planning a lunch trip soon.

1. EVERYONE ELSES MONDAY IS MY SATURDAY!

Suckers!!!

(Web Producer note:  Ssssshhhhh... don't tell Larissa that Rebecca Miller decorated this cake Tuesday -- Larissa's 'Sunday' -- and we all got to eat it.)

Environment green, stomach blue

A new study indicates that your reusable grocery bag, that really cool, environmentally friendly invention may not be good for your health. The study is backed by a plastics industry organization out of Canada, so that it with a grain of salt if you wish, but the doctor we talked to said the study has some validity. Here's the rub, beef and chicken drippings along with vegetable goodies can contaminate your bag. The result, high levels of bacteria and other stuff than can make your brown eyes green. Most people agree that resuable bags are great for the environment, keeping those nasty plastic bags out of landfills, and in Texas, every other tree you see. The doctor says the prescription is simple: WASH YOUR REUSABLE BAGS. Treat them like the rest or your laundry and give them a nice, soapy cycle, before your stomach starts a spin cycle all it's own.

Cyber-Smart

bhavani.jpgToday I got a chance to interview UT Dallas Professor Dr. Bhavani Thuraisingham.

She's a fascinating lady, after studying in the UK she worked in DC. She now finds herself here in Dallas as a Professor of Computer Science and Director of the Universities Cyber Security Research Center.

When she's not teaching or conducting research she's out traveling the world giving speeches. As one of the top experts in cyber security it occurred to me just how lucky we are to have her teaching and living in our community.

The new law school downtown is really going to be a big deal. First of all, the building that will be used is really nice...I love those older buildings that have so much character. Also, the city needed a public institution for those students who just can't afford private ones.

Impressive Pink Out at Colonial Country Club

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for treewithribbon.jpgI haven't seen one golfer who isn't wearing some kind of pink today.

Upon learning of the breast cancer diagnosis of Amy Mickelson last week, the organizers of the Crown Plaza Invitational at Colonial decided to organize a "Pink Out" day.

There is pink everywhere you look, ribbons on trees and poles, pink buttons that say "I love Amy" are affixed to hats and shirts.  There is even a large pink and white umbrella that sends love to Amy Mickelson as well.

Most golfers opted for a pink shirt and white pants, but Ian Poulter has matching pink pants and a pink shirt and they're the same shade of pink.

I hope you don't have the desire to go out and get any pink men's apparel in North Texas, because I believe those close racks are empty.

We will have reaction from the "Pink Out" today as well as all the third round highlights and reaction tonight on The 33 News at 9:00pm.

Brett Hull out as the General Manager of the Dallas Stars

hull_brett240.jpgMissing the playoffs never sits well with Tom Hicks and today he decided to shake up the front office by moving Brett Hull and Les Jackson out of the General Manager office and calling on a former player to move into that role.

Hicks has hired Joe Nieuwendyk to take over as the General Manager and explained his move in a news release issued by the Dallas Stars this afternoon.

"We are very excited to secure Joe Nieuwendyk as the General Manager." Hicks said.  "These moves are all about helping this club take the proverbial 'next step.' Joe is a leader and has been a winner in everything he has done. He is ready for this opportunity and has a bright future as an NHL General Manager. We want that future to be with the Dallas Stars."

Hull and Jackson have been reassigned to different roles within the organization.  Hull's new job is Executive Vice President and Alternate Governor.  Jackson moves back into his old office as Director of Scouting and Player Development.  Hicks made it clear that both men are still important to the organization.

"Brett and Les have done a great job as co-general managers but after analyzing the situation, it is in the team's best interest to return them to roles that fit their respective strengths" Hicks said.  "Brett will assist the club in several business areas and serve as an advisor to me and Jeff Cogen, while Les will go back to what he does best - overseeing our scouting department."

The Stars will formally introduce Nieuwendyk as the General Manager tomorrow afternoon at the American Airlines Center.

We will have more on the move during Inside Sports tonight at 9:30pm on The 33 News

An Historic Weekend For TCU Baseball

Thumbnail image for tcu.gif

For the first time in school history, the TCU baseball team has advanced out of the NCAA regional tournament.

The Frogs rallied from a 4-1 deficit to eliminate Oregon State on Sunday night at Lupton Stadium.

Former Plano West star Jason Coats completed the heroics with the game winning single to right field which scored Matt Holaday from second base. It was one of three hits for Coats who earned the Most Outstanding Player of the Fort Worth Regional.

The Frogs now head for Austin to meet the top seeded Texas Longhorns in the Super Regional later this week as one of 16 teams still in the hunt for the National Title.  Texas advanced with a 14-10 win over the Army on Sunday night in Austin.

Two wins over the Longhorns would clinch one of the 8 spots at the College World Series at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha.

More on the Horned Frogs all this week on The 33 News
