Arlington gets first traffic test with concert at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium

Beware of Cowboys Stadium on Saturday.

COWBOYSVOSAT.jpg

More than 75,000 fans are expected to descend on Arlington for the George Strait concert at the Cowboys Stadium, causing the potential for traffic nightmares.

Officials are encouraging concert attendees to arrive early, being patient when trying leaving and park only in Texas Rangers or Dallas Cowboys' parking.

"That's the only way we can ensure you won't get towed," said Tiara Ellis, an Arlington police spokeswoman.

TOO HOT!!

You knew you'd be hearing from me soon and today is the day.

Today was plenty warm, thank you. Okay, so the blazer and lined pants didn't help, but I did have on sandals (ick!) and my feet already have a tan line.

Is it November yet?

Melanoma Drug: Showing promise

PLX4032. No name, just PLX4032. It's a the melanoma drug that a small study shows to shrink tumors. That is good news here in Texas. Everything is bigger here, including the number of cases of melanoma. Texas ranks third behind California and Florida is the number of cases. Nine thousand Americans will die this year from melanoma. Which brings me back to PLX4032. It was a small test, I mean small. In the Phase 1 trial 9 out of 16 melanoma patients who were given the test drug had their tumors shrink by 30 percent. Let's hope the drug with no name in the tiny study will someday have a huge impact on the lives of people who suffer from advanced stages of melanoma.

TCU Baseball ready for a Turf War in the Super Regional

widetcu.JPGFor the first time since making school history by advancing out of an NCAA regional on Saturday, the Horned Frogs baseball team arrived at Lupton Stadium to practice.

Head coach Jim Schlossnagle gathered the team in the locker room and told them that regardless of how exciting that win over Oregon State was on Sunday night, it's over and now is not the time to reminisce.

It's time to get ready for the #1 ranked Texas Longhorns in the Super Regional in Austin which starts on Saturday at 5:00pm.

Also in the meeting he told Kyle Winkler that he would be the starting pitcher for game one and then told his men instead of practicing on Lupton Stadium, that had a few puddles from the early morning rain, they would be heading over to the football team's Sam Baugh Indoor Practice Facility.

The Frogs took ground balls on the field turf, which is similar to the surface at Disch-Falk Field in Austin.  The Frogs are familiar with that turf after playing there during the regular season in a game the Longhorns won 6-0.

Even though TCU was shut out in that game, the Frogs feel getting familiar with the atmosphere coupled with the fact that Texas had a tough time advancing out of its own regional just feeds their confidence that the Horns are a beatable team.

The Super Regional is a best 2-out-of-3 series with the winner heading to the College World Series in Omaha.

More Swine Flu?

Probably. Range Elementary School in Mesquite closed for the rest of the week, effective tomorrow, after an increasing number of students and staff have called in sick over the past 3 days.

There are 5 confirmed flu cases, but haven't been confirmed as swine flu, though the Dallas County Health Department says that's probably what we're looking at.

Health officials are reminding all of us to be diligent in washing our hands and staying away from others if we're sick.

Happy to be happy

I did a story today about depression. How teen depression is impacted by parental depression. Let's just day, depression loves company. I'm really lucky, I've never been depressed. Some days are happier than others, but depressed, no. Anyhoo, the story goes as follows. If a teen is depressed and has a depressed parent, it takes longer for the teen to get better in therapy. The doctor we interviewed suggested that depression is often a family affair. If mom or dad is depressed, chances are junior is going to be depressed. In a whole, it was a depressing story, this coming from someone who has never been depressed.

8 Liners

Since I have been in Texas I have seen these machines being crushed a million times. These gambling machines seem to really be popular in Texas. The sheriffs office in Tarrant county tells me they cost $1500 each, but can give profits over one million dollars in just six months.

But, its not all fun and games. There have been some serious crimes linked to these gambling machines. There have been robberies of course, but I was told about a murder in Arlington. Tarrant county sheriffs deputies will continue to crack down on the illegal machines.

Great news for dog owners! The FDA has approved the first drug ever designed especially to treat cancer in dogs. The drug is called "Palladia" and it shrinks skin tumors on dogs. This is great news for animals lovers, but I'll have to admit, I can't believe it took this long for drug makers to come up with a drug designed just for dogs. An estimated 70 million Americans own dogs. That's a pretty good target audience. People love their dogs, and now we have a cancer fighting drug to prove it.

The 33 News Quiet Time

So Amanada and Walt are a chatty as far as anchors go... they talk a lot.

Most of the time they are just talking about their kids.. their families.. their weekends. They always speak up during meetings and while we're writing. It is cute really, they have really good chemistry that translates well on air. It is a producers dream.

So thats why it is funny, for me, to run around scripts during the newscast. It is funny because MOST of the time it is really REALLY quiet on set. I drop off scripts and it is DEAD in the studio. ALL business. I try and say a few things- tell a few jokes... but most of the time I get the silent treatment. Maybe a smile.

walt1.JPGThey're busy reading scripts, and sending tons of tweets. They send out tweets in between breaks- they're the only anchor team that is ALWAYS connected to the viewers.

amanda.JPGWell.. they're quiet, UNTIL Rebecca comes on to the set. Then it is time to chat again! Tonight I can't even tell you what they were laughing about... some inside joke that went over my head.

walt and becky.jpg

While I was taking pictures on the set I also went around and took some more "behind the scenes pictures"

lorenzo.JPG

To the left-- this is director. He did not want his picture taken. BUT he is NOT shy. He makes sure everything gets on the air. He punches "buttons" which is actually a very simple term for a very complex job. Without him we would not get video or sound or graphics on the air. You would basically just see Walt and Amanda's faces reading news. Which I bet Walt would have no problem with :)

mark.JPG

To the right- the producer. His job begins at 1 pm and is not over until the newscast is through. He is the brain of the entire show. All of the ideas and stories go through him.

Below is the Chyron Operator.  She makes sure every single "word" or "graphic" or title you see goes on air is for the correct person, at the correct time.

...Continues for me. Yesterday it was traffic & parking leading up to stadium's first event Saturday.

Today, it was the thin, weatherproofing membrane that lines the roof of the stadium.

That may sound pretty mundane until you hear what the 4 dozen men had to do to accomplish the feat. They're tougher than I am (duh)!

No runs, no hits, no errors and no scars

This year nearly 200 thousand Americans will have some form of weight loss surgery. Sometime next year, they may be able to have a new procedure that leave behind no scars. That means no incisions. Doctors snake a tube with a camera on the end down your throat, then snap staples in place. It creates a narrow passage that slows the food as the food moves down. So far only about 300 people have had the experimental surgery. 200 in America and 100 in Europe. The Europeans lost 45% of their bodyweight. The procedure may be federally approved as early as next year.

The OTR (Off The Record) Lunch Trip

robandmark.JPGHamburger. Or "Critter" as Producer Mark calls it.

It must be one of the best meals you can possibly eat. I LOVE hamburgers. I WILL not eat them every day, however. I normally eat salads. But the quest to find a good hamburger is NEVER ending.

I just moved here from Austin . In Austin you get hamburgers at Sandy's on Barton Springs. $2.49 for a burger, drink and fries. It really is the perfect meal.

And here in Dallas there are soo many options. I've been to a few... Snuffers, Twisted Root, Jake's, Angry Dog.

So you can imagine my excitement when I saw this:

It is a story on what Anchor Brian Williams called President Barack Obama's very OTR (off the record) Trip to a mysterious location called "Five Guys." Brian Williams said the burger joint was first discovered by the first lady.

"What is this "Five Guys?" I asked Assistant News Director Rob. (he just moved here from Washington D.C.) "It must be super delicious if the President was willing to go to all that trouble to get it."

"Yes it is really good. One of the best burgers ever." Rob responded. Then I stopped listening to him because he talks too much.... UNTIL he said this: "and there are TWO Five Guys in Dallas."

WHAT THE HECK!?!  Why am I just finding out about this. I was shocked.  I consider my self a HUGE foodie. So I was highly disappointed I didn't know about a huge hamburger chain serving up such a perfectly reviewed snack!

We immediately made plans to go.

Fast forward to TODAY! TODAY was the day. Mark, Rob and I made a SPECIAL trip to the Five Guys in the Galleria before work. I will compare OUR journey- to the president's.

picturesmeandmark.JPG 1. Unlike the president... we did not have an entourage or a famous journalist with us. However like the president- we had paparazzi! (me ... taking pictures.. for this blog)

2. Unlike Brian Williams- we liked lots of ingredients on our burgers. I got grilled onions, mustard, mayo, tomato, lettuce. Brian Williams got just ketchup! How boring.

3. Finally LIKE the president, I am now addicted. We are planning another trip in one month. I THINK this place is AWESOME. I just wish it was closer so we could go more often.

Brian Williams finishes out his segment saying- "Now operating on a fast food high - the White House continues as usual."

last picture.JPG We headed to work right after our lunch. And I can tell you... it wasn't so much of a high, but more of a sluggish crawl. We were full. And sleepy. But it was worth it.

Eddie vs. Jerry?

It's a huge weekend for Jerry Jones with the opening of his 1.4 billion dollar Cowboys Stadium.  The George Strait country music concert is expected to pack the place Saturday night and one man not to happy about it is Eddie Gossage, the General Manager of the Texas Motor Speedway.  At the same time of the concert, the Indy cars will be circling the track at TMS during the Bombardier Leerjet 550k.  I'm not sure if the IRL is filled with as many country music fans as NASCAR, but there's a good chance that several racing fans will skip this race to be a part of history inside Jerryworld.

Eddie just wants to make sure everybody knows that when they're inside the Cowboys Stadium, gawking at the worlds largest high definition screen and the expanse of the retractable roof, that they remember, size does matter.   Look at the picture Eddie had his graphic artists put together showing that it would take four Cowboys Stadiums to fill up the infield at Texas Motor Speedway.

TMSvsCowboysStadiumOrigLo.jpg
Eddie has told me several times, he is friends with Jerry Jones and has nothing against him but he is a marketing maven and whenever he has the chance to find something about his track or sport that can compare with the mighty Cowboys and the NFL, he's darn sure going to take advantage of it.

Jerry Land opens in Arlington!!

It cost more than a BILLION  dollars and the first thing that happens at the Cowboys new stadium isn't even a football game. It's a concert featuring George Strait. The stadium is beautiful and in many ways, still a work in progress. Construction in the area will make for a challenging day for people going to the concert. We interviewed some fans who drove all the way from El Paso to see the show and were mildly disappointed when they saw all the construction going on. They also are worried about parking, and traffic getting in. Arlington officials say the recipe for a great day is arrive early and be patient. Where are 60 thousand country music fans going tomorrow? JERRY LAND!! I hope everyone has a great time. Send us your thoughts about the stadium and concert.

The story behind the story..may be better than the story

Everyone has one of those days, today it was my turn in the barrel. I started my day on a health related story and then got switched to a story about the GM of the Cowboys stadium reportedly getting arrested for suspicion of DWI. Easy enough, happens a lot in this business. You also make a lot of calls in this business. Tons of calls. Today, the Arlington police did not return my calls, a PR firm did not return my call. The Cowboys did return my call, but would only say "We are aware of the situation." If I had wanted to talk about the beautiful stadium, how shall I say this, my phone would have been ringing off the hook. People not returning calls also happens a lot in this business. Now, on the the part about actually putting the story together. It's called a VO, voice over some video. It's easy, but we could not get my voice recorded on three different pieces of equipment. Finally, we recorded on a second camera in the live truck. Then the edit deck wouldn't work. Finally, we just decided send audio and video back to the station and have our guys back here take care of it. We did get it on, with about four minutes to spare. There must be a gremlin in the equipment because I'm told the problems have been fixed. Tomorrow is another day and it may be just like today, but in the end I feel I'm REALLY lucky to do what I'm doing. See you tomorrow.

Cowboys Defense puts on a show at Tuesday OTA Workout

Great catches were few and far between at the Cowboys organized team activity in Carrollton today. In fact there were so many drops that when a receiver made a catch it was an exception rather than the norm and head coach Wade Phillips wasn't pleased with it.

"Offensively we struggled a little bit as far as some of our timing and getting off plays, so we gotta work hard at those things." Phillips said.  "One side did a lot of things well, one side struggled a little bit and that's kind of how you do it in the off season but it's good work for both sides"

williams one hand.jpgRoy Williams hauled in a pass from Jon Kitna with one hand and made the best catch of the day.  "He makes an outstanding play nearly every day," said Phillips. "The catch he made today was spectacular, we expect him to do that."  Roy expects that as well but he and the rest of the receivers ran into a feisty group in the secondary that turned heads with several pass break ups.  Williams liked what he saw from the men wearing the defensive blue jerseys today. "I see touchdowns when I go against these guys but they put on a show today, they came our ready to play and tomorrow we have to come back and bring it to these guys."  It was obvious that Roy's competitive nature took a hit after today's workout. "They say we're not playing against these guys, we're playing against ourselves,  getting better,  but they've got the opposite jersey than we do and we have to win, that's my approach.

These OTA workouts are conducted without pads so when Patrick Watkins took down rookie receiver Manuel Johnson from Oklahoma it got a little tense."I didn't try to hit him, I was just going for the ball trying to make a play on it" Watkins said. "I I didn't mean to hit him,  of course, but sometimes it happens, my teammates knew I didn't do it on purpose."

Secondary coach Dave Campo was yelling out Courtney Brown's name all practice long and today that was a good thing.  Brown broke up several passes as he has impressed many folks with his coverage skills in a move from safety to cornerback, especially Phillips. " If he could cover like he did today, he may have a home there" said Phillips.

ball int frz.jpgWhile Brown works at his move to corner, Alan Ball is trying his hand at safety, switching from the cornerback spot.  Ball was playing in Ken Hamlin's spot as Hamlin dealt with some personal issues and had an interception to go along with a few pass break ups.  This is his third season on the Cowboys roster.  Bill Parcells always maintained that you really find out what a player is made of in his third season.  Ball is hoping this is the year he breaks out.
"I'm hoping it's a breakout for the Cowboys in general, anywhere I can play my role I hope it helps us get better as a secondary, get better as a defense and as a team" Ball said.

The Cowboys wrap up their voluntary OTA workouts tomorrow, give the team four days off and then reconvene for mandatory mini-camp workouts next Monday.  They'll have two-a-day workouts Monday and Wednesday and a single practice on Tuesday.

Check out today's workout tonight on The 33 News at 9:00pm

That's what some Chrysler dealers are forced to do...starting tonight. Over the past month, I've talked to many car dealers losing their franchises and their employees, but thankfully not their entire livelihoods.

Dallas Stars fire Head Coach Dave Tippett

tippett.jpgAccording to a report from TSN in Canada, new Stars General Manager Joe Nieuwendyk has fired Head Coach Dave Tippett.

Tippett was the head coach of the Stars for the last six seasons and the team made the playoffs every season he was in charge except for last year when the team was expected to contend for the Stanley Cup, one year after the squad advanced to the Western Conference Finals.

Several phone calls to the Dallas Stars front office, have not been returned as of yet.

No successor has been named yet but TSN reports sources saying that Nieuwendyk has asked permission to talk to former Los Angeles Kings coach Mark Crawford who is still under contract to the Kings.

Storms hammer Grapevine

paulinetree.jpg

I've been living in Grapevine for ten years now and the storms that ripped through our neighborhood today were the worst I've seen.  On our street, just to the southwest part of Lake Grapevine, limbs of trees were split from the trunk.

harveytree.jpg

One of my neighbors had just planted spring flowers so nicely around a tree, now they need a new tree.

salukitree1.jpg

Across the street, two of my neighbor friends, who happen to be proud Salukis, like myself, now have a tree with limbs only on the right side of the tree.  The ones on the left side were sheered off at the trunk.

fence.jpg

Wooden fences, by the dozen are now resting on the sidewalks exposing backyards that are filled with branches and leaves.

When Rebecca and Bob called for the tornado warnings in our area, three of our four kids, the dog and the chinchilla all headed for the interior closet with the flashlight.

pauline.jpg

It was quite an experience, and I look forward to spending my day off tomorrow putting all the lawn furniture back where it belongs as well as helping my neighbors cut those fallen limbs into firewood.

VERY severe weather..

I don't think VERY severe is an actual weather term, but it's accurate. Wow, we went out on a weather story tonight and found one. Actually, it found us. We were in Trophy Club when tonight's nasty weather blew through. Shingles were flying, trees were uprooted and signs were blown out. The guy a the Exxon station says the sign cost him ten thousand dollars. The Taco Bell sign didn't fare any better. Power was out in many places along 114 in Trophy Club. Sometimes when there is a threat of severe weather, it never materializes. Still, we photogphers and reporters try to track them down and often come up empty. It's as if mother nature is dodging us. Not tonight. Tonight, we didn't find mother nature, she found us.

No Day In The Park

We visited White Rock Lake to shoot some pictures for my story today. I watched as the walkers, runners and bikers cruised past. The sounds of birds and the laughter of children filled the air.

It was nice and reminded me of summers as a kid. That's when an older woman on a bike, (think Wizard of Oz ) wearing spandex shorts yelled at us to "get off the trail." It was funny since she and her partner had been the only two in sight. I wanted to yell something back at her but it didn't. Funny, even in my 40's I'm still getting in trouble with adults.

What a day it has been. After a night of rain there were many problems out at the Marina. High winds made a mess of the building itself. It has not been confirmed, but managers at the marina are reporting that they saw a funnel cloud yesterday.

So far managers think damage will be in the millions. The marina building is almost a complete loss. One boat sunk, others probably have significant damage. Right now owners estimate it may take at least three months to repair.

Messy Day in Denton County

I love any day that I get to wear my rubber rain boots with dogs on them. Everyone else hates them, but that matters not. Trust me, they're great.

But what wasn't great is wading ankle high in some spots to look at the storm damage suffered by homeowners in Hebron, Flower Mound and Lewisville.

It hurts to see downed trees, some blocking driveways and lying on top of houses. People were without power into the heat of the day. One apartment complex lost part of its roof, displacing a handful of families.

Everyone we talked to was so calm about their situation, their damage firmly attached to perspective. Noone was hurt. Noone was injured. That, they told us, makes the storm tolerable.

It's a big enough umbrella, but it's always west Dallas that ends up getting wet

We've had our fair share or rain lately, including west Dallas. The people who live in the lower area are up to their ears in water. Many evacuated this morning because of rising waters. A nearbly pump station was hit by lightening, twice. The motor was fried and workers are trying to fix it as fast as they can. The last thing we need tonight, while the pump is fixed, is more more rain. I hope they work fast and mother nature is slow.

Wisconsin Ear Mold

blog shana ear piece 001.jpg blog shana ear piece 002.jpgWhen reporters and anchors talk to each other, they use an IFB. It is an earpiece that is custom fit for their ears.

When you hear those awkward conversations on TV, where the anchor tosses to the reporter in the field, and the reporter can't really hear what the anchor is saying, so they say something weird back, that probably means the reporter can't hear the anchor, and something is the matter with their IFB.

Shana Franklin's IFB isn't working as well, so she had Assignments desk worker Dan Bach make her a new one. She had to put this little mold in her ear, and then sit there for 15 minutes while I laughed at her and took pictures of her.

Then Dan sent the little ear mold off to Wisconsin Ear Mold company. They'll send her a new one in a couple of weeks.

Every news station sends their IFB molds to the Wisconsin Ear Mold Company. They must be raking in the IFB business. blog shana ear piece 005.jpg

Rangers Defense a Key to 2009 Success

Even with their slumping bats, the Rangers continue to hang on to first place in the American League West by 4 1/2 games over the Mariners and Angels and you can give the pitching and defense the credit for that.

The Rangers starting pitchers have been consistently pitching deep into games, keeping the score down and that has had a very positive effect on the defense.

kinsler.jpgAccording to John Dewan, co-publisher of ACTA Sports, the Rangers are one of the best defensive clubs in Major League baseball and also has one of the top fielders in the game.

Dewan notes in his Stat of the Week column that Ian Kinsler has already saved 12 runs through 57 games at second base, a drastic change from his defense the last three seasons.

(Used with permission from John Dewan's Stat of the Week™, www.statoftheweek.com.)

Kinsler was one of three Rangers who made terrific defensive plays in a 1-0 win over the Blue Jays last night.

One of the interesting notes Dewan had in an article last month, how much the Rangers have benefited from replacing Michael Young with Elvis Andrus at shortstop.   Young cost the Rangers 24 runs playing short last year and has cost the team 10 runs at third base so far.  As for Elvis, he's saved six runs at short with his solid defense this year.

Inter league play returns tonight at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington with the Dodgers coming to town for a three game weekend series.

We'll have the highlights tonight on The 33 News at 9:00pm

Big Friday

Talk about a fast week. Sometimes when things go just right, things seem to drag and become routine. That can be good for stories because if you schedule things just so, you have more time to work on your story and line up other possible stories. Not this week because of late breaking weather. Jim, in fact, is out on some tonight. Last night I followed a rain story with some late in the day information about a pump that was hit by lightening. That came down after running all over town getting flooding video for story. This week went by fast, but it wasn't boring. Have a good weekend and check the blog on Monday. Have a great weekend.

You're Ejected! You too, and you, and you....

Did you hear the odd story out of West Burlington, Iowa?

An umpire was just sick and tired of hearing it from the crowd, so he ejected everyone from the stands.  Don Briggs said the fans were being unruly so he tossed out more than 100 of them and then he called the police as a precaution.

Briggs may not be umpiring many more games in West Burlington because school Superintendent James Sleister said he thought the umpire overreacted after not seeing any unusual behavior from the crowd.

The mass ejection caused a 40 minute delay and afterward, West Burlington ended up winning the game over Winfield-Mount Union,  12-11

The group, past of the school's radio and television class, spent several days in Washington DC covering the inauguration. They also spent time in Chicago, looking into the man himself.

I watched the movie and am glad none of the students want my job...yet. Good job, everyone!

How? ... How? .... How? ... so many are asking that question

These are the difficult days when the story is sad and tragic that it just kicks you in the gut. Covering the story of 9-month old Daisja Weaver is about as hard as it gets. This little girl barely had a start in life before her life was taken (on purpose or by accident) and then her lifeless body was tied to a sandbag and dropped in Lake Lewisville (allegedly) by her OWN PARENTS.

Many of you are ranting what I am also feeling, how can someone do something like this to such an innocent, precious baby. After years of covering stories like Daisja and interviewing the cops who deal with this everyday, you realize there are no answers. You can't fully explain an evil heart.

The Walt

A little back story first.  Every evening about 6:30 or so Walt leaves the station for a Java hit.  He says he'll be back in 20; it's more like 45 minutes to an hour, but that's another blog.

If you haven't figured it out yet, Walt's kind of chatty.  He's a very friendly fellow.  How can you not like Walt?  He's a great guy.  Well, he's become BFFs with the baristas at Starbucks. So much so, they've named a coffee after him!

Yes, a coffee.  It's called....drum roll please.... "The Walt."

A tall, Pike's Place with 2-percent milk, and 1 and a half packets of sugar in the raw.  He announced this accomplishment to the newsroom Monday night.  None of us believe him.

We're out to prove someone wrong either the newsroom or Walt. Click here to watch the video blog to find out who's right.  And if you're ever at the Starbucks on Mockingbird Lane and 183, ask for "The Walt."

Got Milk? At Mother's Milk Bank, there's not enough

I've never heard of a mother's milk shortage, but that's why they call it news. I was nosing around for a story the other day and called the Mother's Milk Bank of North Texas in Fort Worth. The story I originally called about didn't pan out, but I was told there's a huge shortage of donated milk. The same amount of mothers are donating, the same amound of premies are in the ICU, so what's the deal? There is apparently an unusually large number of babies who were born VERY early. One baby was born in March, her due date was July 23rd. The mother's daughter survived on donated milk. We saw another tiny baby in a similar situation. This business never ceases to amaze me. A shortage of mother's milk? Who knew? Now, we do.

100 Deadliest Days for Teen Drivers -- What's a Parent to do?

Most parents don't have to be told that the summer months are the scariest for teenage drivers. With kids out of school, many are hitting the roads and that can be a dedly combo.

According to experts, May, July and August are the 100 deadliest days of the years. it may be the bad habits of teens that experts say may be to blame. You know the texting, talking on the phone, speeding and even drinking.

So what can a parent do? .. Here are few tips from the folks at Allstate Insurance who sponsored the latest survey of North Texas teen drivers.

Five Teen Tips

1. Set Road Rules

Establish written expectations for safe driving behaviors. A parent-teen driving contract is available online at allstate.com/teen <http://www.allstate.com/teen> to help parents and teens set guidelines and consequences.

2. Focus on the Road, Not Your Social Life

Driver error causes 87% of all teen driving accidents. Texting, eating and playing with the radio are all easily avoidable driving distractions.

3. Buckle Up and Slow Down

Speeding is the number one cause of fatal crashes involving teen drivers in Texas, followed by failure to wear safety belts.

4. Learn the Law

Remind teens that Texas graduated driver licensing laws restrict nighttime driving and designate passenger limitations for teen drivers.

5. Don't Drink and Drive

My kids are still in elementary school or younger -- so I haven't encountered this problem, yet. So I hope the ideas above give you some helpful answers.

The search for nine month old Daisja Weaver's body continued today at Lewisville Lake. Members of the Lewisville fire department were searching. To Walt, Or Not to Walt

Have you seen this Link?

The Walt- Amanda's Blog

It is video Rob Cartwright (the Assistant News Director) shot of Amanda and Walt going to Starbucks. Walt swore to everyone yesterday that the guys that work at Starbucks on 183 & Mockingbird named a drink after him. They call it "The Walt:" A Pike Place Coffee, one and a half packets of Sugar in the Raw and 2% milk.

Sure enough Amanda ordered "The Walt" and they hand it to her.... just like Walt likes it.

So.... I thought it would be funny to come to the afternoon meeting with a coffee that said "The Walt" on it. I stopped by Starbucks on my way to work.

I didn't really want "The Walt." Really I just ordered a regular coffee.

So you can imagine my surprise when I had this conversation with the Barista:

Me: "Hii, I know this is weird but can I have a favor?"

Barista: "Okay."

Me: "Um could you write, 'The Walt' on my drink?

Barista: "Uh, Why?"

Me: "Yeah I know weird right? See I work at this place..."

Barista: (Interrupting me) "No I know what 'The Walt' is, and we're reading a blog about it right now. What you just ordered is NOT 'The Walt'

Me: "uhhh you do? yeah "The Walt" is pretty fattening. I always get skim milk or Soy or...

Barista: "Just pull around."

Sure enough when I got to the drive-thru window, they handed me this: (see below, cup on left)

coffee 001.jpgA Grande- "NOT the Walt"

Hilarious.

Raw Food Diet

Today I interviewed author and gourmet food chef Paul Nison.  He has written 8 books on the raw food diet lifestyle.  His latest book is titled "The Daylight Diet."  Paul eats 2 maybe 3 meals a day. Breakfast which consists of fruit, lunch is a big salad and for a late afternoon meal he eats out at a raw food restaurant or makes a raw food meal at home.  Paul doesn't eat after dark.  He doesn't eat past 4 or 5 pm.  He recommends people sleep on an empty stomach to get the best digestive benefits also eat between the hours of 8am and 5pm.

I try to not eat after 7:30pm, but that is very hard especially on this schedule.  When I get home, about 10:45 I crave a little snack.  One of our reporter Barry Carpenter eats cereal when he gets home, I usually eat a sandwich.

I'm going to try a semi-raw food diet.  I like chicken and fish can't quite give it up.

Is Your Window Tint Legal?

My truck has factory tinted windows but I've always wanted to get them even darker. Lets face it we live in Texas, you can bake a cake inside most cars during the summer.

Now lawmakers have decided to change the law making once acceptable dark window tint illegal. So how do you know? If you had your front windows tinted to match your back factory tinted widows chances are your front widows are to dark.

The only real way to know if your legal to get some clarification from the nice police offer who just pulled you over or  if you fail a state inspection. I get it, police and other drivers want to see who's behind the wheel.

Now if they can just make a law that makes potholes illegal, don't hold your breath.

Elvis. The Beatles. The Jonas Brothers. They all have one thing in common: They've make teen girls scream. Sometimes faint. There's an actual medical term that applies to getting so excited that you pass out. I won't bore you with the name, besides, it's VERY hard to spell. Anyway, Arlington EMS is ready for girls that maybe haven't had enough to eat or drink. That in combination with the Jonas Brothers can mean only one thing: Fainting. It probaby won't happen, but adults have to prepare for everything, even teens who get so excited they pass out.

Who ya gonna call?

When I was younger I was obsessed with the Ghostbusters. I pretty much watched both movies over and over and over again. Also I had the nintendo game and computer game. I also had a crush on Bill Murray.

So you can imagine how thrilled I was when our Desk Assignments Manager Brenda called out to the producer in the middle of the newsroom: "HEEY. Walt's on his way back and is bringing back something called a Proton Pack, or something."

WHAT! A PROTON PACK! This is the greatest day ever. I was already jealous that Walt got to go on a story with the local company that created the new Ghostbusters Video game. Walt got to talk to the creators, and the creators got to talk to the actors from the movie, who voiced the video game.

I think I was the MOST excited when Walt came back to the newsroom-- with this:

waltghostbusters.JPGBut he quickly attracted a crowd. People in the newsroom wanted to SEE the proton pack, but almost everyone didn't really know what it was. I heard people call it a "laser gun" and a "light saber." Really. A Light Saber? (Walt said the company created the fake proton pack for fun, but actually used it to help with their game design.)

crowdgrows.JPGWikipedia's Definition of Proton Pack

For me, getting to try on the Proton Pack was like a dream come true.  This also became my new facebook picture. Some people have left comments on my facebook page. Saying I'm "nerdy" or "not cool"

Stephen Jones Admits: T.O. had to go to benefit Romo

owenstd.jpg Jerry Jones has spent a good portion of the off-season justifying the release of Terrell Owens as a move to open up opportunities for Roy Williams and Patrick Crayton and for the offense to utilize the running backs more effectively.  Well Jerry's son, Stephen, is telling a different story.

Stephen Jones has told Michael Silver of Yahoo.com, Owens was released to help Tony Romo realize his leadership potential, which Jones says was being held back by Owens.

"It's hard to take over leadership when you've got a strong personality like Terrell," Jones said. "If you look back at our old teams [from the 1990s], a lot of people would say maybe Michael [Irvin] was the leader. Then you might say, 'He was a receiver. What about Troy [Aikman]? He was the quarterback. Wasn't he the leader?' And the answer is, yeah, Troy was a leader. But if Michael wasn't supportive of him, Troy would've had problems.

"A lot of our players thought the world of Terrell - they still do. They loved the way he prepared and how hard he played, and everybody respected his skills and what he'd done in the league. And with him here, I think he was always going to carry that kind of weight."

You can read the entire story here

Plan on Camping with the Cowboys?

Thumbnail image for COWBOYSCAMP.gifThis will be the 11th Cowboys Training Camp that I've covered.  We've sweated out the practices in Austin and Wichita Falls and enjoyed the beautiful scenery and terrific temperatures of Oxnard, California.  The workouts held at the Alamodome in San Antonio are always the most exciting, and that's one reason I'm glad camp is moving back there this year.

You can count on a couple thousand Cowboys fans in the crowd to cheer for the big plays and even fire out an occasional boo for a dropped pass or missed coverage. The players are normally very accommodating to sign autographs after practices and if they don't sign after the first workout, there's always after the second workout of two-a-days.

It is a great place to bring the family, admission is free, autographs are free and they do sell concessions inside.

If you stay at the team hotel, which is the Grand Hyatt San Antonio you can catch players indome.jpg the morning and evenings in the lobby and get more autographs and pictures.

Training Camp starts with the big fan kickoff event on Tuesday, July 28th.  The first practice is on Wednesday, July 29th and runs through August 19th.

Patrick Crayton tells us why he is so excited for Camp to be returning to the Alamodome, tonight on The 33 News at 9:00pm

I love food!

And stories about food. So I had a good day today.

The city of Roanoke has received a dining distinction that I will eventually put to the test on my bottomless pit of a stomach. In the more immediate future, it is expected to benefit the city's bottom line, as word spreads.

Find out why you might want to eat in this Denton County city.  It is as always, just a few clicks away on the 33tv.com.

Corruption Scandal

Went to federal court today to cover the Dallas City Hall Corruption trial day one... a lot of waiting around only to be kicked out of the courtroom. It seems there were a lot of jurors - there wasn't enough room in the courtroom for folks such as the media or sketch artists. So needless to say that makes it a bit more challenging getting the story.

Covering a case in federal court

What won't be reported... trying to get all of my stuff through the metal detectors at the courthouse. Well, it doesn't always work. They made me dump my water. No biggie but not my water sack! It keeps water cool all day long. I was able to get my breast pump in and my cooler for that. It's always a challenge... pumping on the go but it's gotta be done. Any new moms out there? What do you think?

Some like it hot, some don't. Part two.

Ignore the previous post. Pushed wrong button. My story today: HEAT. Is it hot in here, or is it just me? Let me answer that, it was hot, and it's going to get hotter. I know it's summer  and it's Texas..but still. We haven't hit 100 degrees, but 98 is still hot. Heath officials have this advice: Drink lots of fluids. Water. Not beer, not soda, water. Wear lighweight and loose fitting clothing. One other thing: Never leave leave people or pets in the car. Now get out there and make it a good summer!

Child Drownings

They are as high as the mercury right now in North Texas and across the state.  I spoke with one parent brave enough to revisit July 2003, when her then 2 year old son almost drown.  He was found face down in a friend's pool after going missing for just a minute.  That friend saved his life, helping another friend do CPR until paramedics arrived.

The family knows they got lucky.  They see it in their happy, healthy 8 year old.  They want you to pay close attention to your children around the water this summer.

Check out their story on our website in the News section.  Be safe.

Gay issues at church

That started off as my story so off I went to Bedford where Episcopalians broke away from the Episcopal church to form the new Anglican Church of North America banning gay bishops and women as clergy. What do you think?

Just so happens that the Southern Baptist Convention in Kentucky this morning delegates decided to part ways with Fort Worth's Broadway Baptist Church saying they're too lenient when it comes to gay issues. We'll have the full report tonight at 9 but feel free to weigh in.

"He was distraught unlike anything I have ever seen"

That is how one Mother decribes the anguish her husband felt when he realized he had left their 6-month old daughter in a hot car for four hours on a sweltering August day. Mika Terry died in that car, while scores of construction workers walked past the car window for hours.

Michelle Terry shares her story about pain, loss and coping in the wake of the tragedy that took her youngest daughter in hopes of waking up others to what can happen if a parent/caregiver makes just one mistake and forgets.

Being a mother myself, I found my eyes welling up with tears when Terry described seeing her lifeless child, knowing the baby girl was gone. You have to ask her how she managed to forgive her husband, but she says she doesn't blame him because he is a good Dad.

Terry is an inspirational person, who hopes to make a difference. Her family holds a concert each year in the fall to raise money for awareness. It's called Music 4 Mika. This family because of their hardship is trying to make the world a little safer for other kids.

Fort Worth City Council approves resolution to lease part of Rosemont Park

Whether it be Fort Worth or Dallas, residents will always fight to keep green space.

Fort Worth residents did just that today, but they were unable to defeat a resolution that could lead to 1.5 acres of Rosemont Park in South Fort Worth being leased to Fort Worth ISD.

The land would be used for a new elementary school and a community center. In return, the school district would lease 6.7 acres nearby to the city for an additional park.

All that glitters..is not lip gloss

Now lip gloss may be dangerous. Maybe. There is no clinical study to back it up, but a growing number of dermatologists believe lip gloss without SPF may actually increase the risk of lip cancer. Theory goes like this: Applying lip gloss without SPF is like tanning with baby oil. Some believe the shiny coat actually helps untraviolet rays penetrate the lips. The dermatologist we interviewed today basically says more studies need to be done, but just in case, always use lip gloss with an SPF of at least 15.

Braving the Heat

Hundreds did in Dallas today.  They came to show support for those in Iran who are fighting for their freedom.

Many have family and friends on the street protesting; some beating victims.

Several today told me it was their duty to speak for those who can't.  If you haven't seen tonight's news piece, please watch.

You should know where to find me (A little guilt there)!  Let me hear from you!!

The heat is on, day three

The hottest day of the year and it's really not the headline. The headline is the fyears first Level Red Ozone Alert. Putting it simply, the air was so bad today it was unhealthy for everyone. We visited an ER in Grapevine where two people were taken early this afternoon. Both have a history of lung problems. A daycare center was full of kids because they weren't allowed outside. The playground was silent and empty. Health experts say if you can pull it off, say indoors. The air pollution is supposed to be unhealthy through Friday.

Michael Jackson RIP

Pretty shocking. Michael Jackson is dead. Days like this, you remember. I was working at a TV station in El Paso when it crossed the wires that Princess Diana was dead. I was looking out my apartment window in San Mateo, CA when I heard on the radio Elvis died. Today, I was working on a story in Dallas when I heard Michael Jackson died. These are the days you don't forget.

Jackson Death Mystery Deepens

As of this writing -- we are still awaiting word from the LA Co. coroner's office on the results of Michael Jackson's autopsy. The coroner has promised to say whatever is possible about the results, even though it may take 6-8 weeks to yield results of the toxicology findings.

As you know -- allegations of abuse of prescription drugs are swirling following the death of the pop icon. It is yet to be determined if Jackson died as the result of any legal or illegal drug use. But, experts say as with all celebrity deaths, if Jackson's demise is related to popping pills, it will surely serve as a wakup call to others who may have fallen into a dangerous cycle.

North Texans rush to get Michael Jackson memorabilia

Michael Jackson popularity might have seemed like it waned over the last several years. There's no doubt now about Jackson's star power.

Within minutes of Michael Jackson's death, residents across the metroplex began searching for something that they could remember the King of Pop by.

For some, it was a vinyl. But for others, it was anything with his name or image on it.

At the Half Priced Books off Northwest Highway, Michael Jackson items flew off the shelves within 30 minutes. By the next morning, staff saw another wave of Jackson fans buy everything they could get their hands on.

Plano resident David Salas was among those searching for memorabilia on Friday. He woke up at 5 a.m. Friday to try to find anything with Jackson's face on it.

The King is Dead, but influence lives on

When you have sold 750 million records and have 13 number one singles, you have influence. Michael Jackson's impact is HUGE. I went to Maximedia studios today and chatted with the cheif engineer there. He was tagged to work on the Jackson Five reunion record in the late 90's, but the record never happened. He says every artist that walks into the studio lists MJ as one of their top five influences. Jay Fankhauser and Lil Twist, two sixteen year old aspiring stars, say Jackson is a huge influence. Jay is inspired by how entertaining Jackson was. Lil Twist liked his style. He even wears a cool Jackson inspired hat. Both are expecting to release records. I've posted a song each from Jay and Lil Twist below. Take a listen, you may be among the first to hear the next Michael Jackson.

Frisco Family Killed

35 year old Shelby Hayes died today, following the same tragic fate as her 38 year old husband, 7 year old son and 55 year old mother.  The group was in Oklahoma when they were involved in a chain-reaction crash that killed 10.

Neighbors I met today are pitching in to take care of the family pets and coordinate with extended family.  They say it is their duty to help where they can.  They are also more eager to get to know their other neighbors, now knowing hoe fleeting life can be.

How big is the heart of Cowboys linebacker Bradie James?

Shaking Hands.jpgAs far as Dallas Cowboys fans go, it's hard to beat the passion that 53 year old Butch Franklin has for the team.  He had autographed posters hanging in his apartment until thieves broke in and ripped them off the walls three weeks ago.More heartbreaking is that Butch is mentally disabled.  But he has a smile on his face today after some Cowboys players stepped up to make Butch an even bigger fan today.

When Cowboys Linebacker Bradie James heard that someone broke into this man's apartment and stole his Cowboys stuff,  he wanted to make sure those empty spaces were filled with new and shiny memorabilia, so he brought a bag full of autographed items to give to his new friend. "He now has a a mini-helmet, a ball, a jersey and a picture so butch got hooked up today" said James.  And his spirit, definitely lifted up after what's been a tough three weeks.  "I didn't feel no good" said Butch Franklin who cried after realizing that thieves took his autographed Tony Romo poster. "He was devastated" said the Mosaic Executive Director Jo Beth Collier, a non profit facility that assists people with disabilities.  "I know how important the memorabilia was to Butch. People cherish certain things in their life, and that was one thing that was important to him."

Bradie heard about the story last week and decided to take action. "That's crazy (the robbery) but things happen and when things happen we have to step up and do something positive." James said. "You know you're doing something that can make an impact in someones life positively, it's part of living your purpose."  And today that meant making it a good day for Butch.

"It takes a long time to get a lot of memorabilia that he stored up so I just wanted to contribute and add on to his new collection." James said.

Before Bradie left, there was one important matter to take care of.  He presented Butch with a #56 jersey to wear, in addition to the Tony Romo jersey he was currently wearing. Butch proceeded to switch to the #56.  Butch said with a smile, "Bradie James! Number 56!"

seat shot FF.jpgEarlier today,  Cowboys Lineman Cory Proctor also paid Butch a surprise visit and autographed and delivered a seat-back from Texas stadium with signatures from fellow linemen Leonard Davis and Mark Columbo.  Butch may end up being the most highly decorated Cowboys fan in the Metroplex before the season starts.

Butch's message to the Cowboys who took time out of their busy days allow him to have a good day, "Thank you for everything!"

This is why we have the Yellowpages..

The American College of Emergency Physicials is proving me right. I've said it all along, if there is a ladder, power saw or high speed drill involved, call for help. Doctor's say more and more do-it-yourself homeowners are getting hurt and going to the emergency room. Here is my rule of thumb: The louder the tool, the more dangerous it is. The higher the ladder, the more dangerous it is. Same for electricity. Electricity is great, just don't touch it. I interviewed a home improvement expert and he advised that when it comes to electricity, call a pro. I'm all for saving money, but if you really don't know what you're doing, you'll wind up in the hospital and you'll spend more than you'll ever know.

Who isn't telling the truth about the raid at the Rainbow?

After hearing multiple accounts today from police, witnesses and public intoxication suspects -- it's difficult to sort out what really happened during the weekend raid at the gay bar in Fort Worth called the Rainbow Lounge.

One woman tells me cops came in with full force and started spinning bar stools around and throwing people up against walls. Then you hear from the FW Police Chief that officers say they were bombarded with lewd, explicit gestures and that one cop was even grabbed in the groin.

Whatever the outcome -- and it will take some time to wait for the internal report -- it won't be good for either side. Someone isn't telling the truth and you have to hope that the truth will eventually come out.

When a pain killer becomes painful

Acetaminophen. Doctor's say it's in hundreds of over the counter pain killers and fever reducers. You may know the products as Tylenol and Nyquil. Today an FDA panel of experts advised reducing the dosage because of so many unintentional overdoses. Last year, 56 thousand people went to the ER after taking too many pills. It can cause severe liver damage and even death. In the 1990's the drug was reportedly linked to more than 450 deaths. Doses of more than 1,000 mg will likely be by prescription only. A final decision by the FDA is likely months away.

"I think you're drunk -- you are under arrest"!

It just doesn't sound like something that can really happen, but it does .. a lot. People are arrested for public intoxication, without any more than an officer "suspecting" they are drunk. Of course, the officer is supposed to smell alcohol, see blood shot eyes or hear slurred speech -- but, come on face it, all the cop really has to do is tag you as drunk and off you go to jail.

That is what witnesses say happened during the raid at the Rainbow Lounge in Fort Worth. Many say people who weren't even drinking were handcuffed and arrested, just because they were in the bar. Of course, defense attorneys cry foul on this one. One attorney calls it a "crime of opinion" -- and that opinion belongs to the officer.

It seems like there should be more checks and balances -- perhaps an officer should be mandated to do at least a field sobriety test before loading someone up and taking them to the drunk tank .. not to mention the heafty fine that goes with it. This just smells wrong, doesn't it?
