Arlington gets first traffic test with concert at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium

Beware of Cowboys Stadium on Saturday.

More than 75,000 fans are expected to descend on Arlington for the George Strait concert at the Cowboys Stadium, causing the potential for traffic nightmares.

Officials are encouraging concert attendees to arrive early, being patient when trying leaving and park only in Texas Rangers or Dallas Cowboys' parking.

"That's the only way we can ensure you won't get towed," said Tiara Ellis, an Arlington police spokeswoman.

Various businesses around the stadium already have signs warning of possible towing for unauthorized parked vehicles. However, those businesses could opt for charging for parking.

And for now, those charges might be as high they'll ever get.

The Arlington City Council has agreed to write an ordinance -- dubbed the entrepreneurial parking permit -- that would cap how much businesses, churches and schools can charge for parking, city officials said.

The permit, which would not be available for homeowners, would cost between $100 to $150, officials said.

However, the ordinance will not be in place before the George Strait concert.

The bigger issue could be how the area will deal with the traffic generated from the concert. It's any one's guess on how things will go. They could go quite smoothly or horrendous depending on how things play out.

Either way, it'll give everyone a chance to learn how they can improve the system with the Cowboys' kick off their first season and the Super Bowl comes to town.

"It's a learning experience," she said. "We are going to take what we get from this event and see what works and doesn't."
