run to your nearest mall.... the world is on sale!

I did a little shopping..... mostly for summer staples.  At the GAP I got three pairs of pants, two pairs of shorts, and 5 T-shirts for $124!!!!  When I checked out I asked the sales associate about the steals, he said it's the perfect time to shop because next week stores get in their fall merchandise.

So drop by your favorite shops to grab the deals before they're gone.  With summer in Texas lasting virtually until October, you can find some amazing prices on the hottest trends of the season.

Darkness, darkness

I've never had a problem sleeping. If I'm not sleepy, I don't go to bed. If I'm sleepy, I go to bed. That's my prescription for sleep. I'm lucky. I did a story today about insomnia. Roughly 15% of Americans suffer from chronic insomnia, including..reportedly, Michael Jackson. A woman who claims she was Jackson's nurse says he asked her to round up a drug called Diprivan. She didn't because it's dangerous. It's used in intensive care units and emergency rooms for surgery. A sleep expert I interviewed for the story said people with insomnia become desperate and will do anything to sleep. I've never really thought about it until today, but I'm really lucky I can go home and sleep.

Smoking-Cessation Drugs Get Safety Warning

Chantix and Zyban must now carry black-box warnings from the FDA, the strongest the agency issues.  It has to do with listing possible side effects, like depression and suicidal thoughts.

That makes Plano man Ken Albrecht very happy.  His son Carter was shot to death in 2007 after a neighbor thought he was trying to break into his house. Albrecht blames his son's death on Chantix, a smoking-cessation drug his son had just started taking.  Albrecht says it changed his son's entire personality.

Carter was widely described as a brilliant musician, easy going and fun.  His father says a lot positive has happened since his son's death, including a release last month of a new album and the creation of the Carter Albrecht Music Foundation.

Some like it hot, but they also like AC

It's going to be hotter than a firecracker this weekend. Pun intended. But what some folks at a Dallas apartment complex are going through is no laughing matter. They claim they've not had air conditioning for three weeks. An attorney filed a class action lawsuit on behalf of more than 300 tenants. I was in an apartment with no air. A mother and her two month old baby were sitting in front of a box fan. It's tough seeing the things we see in this business. Tonight, I'll go home to a home with AC. I know I'll be thinking of that mom and baby in front of that fan. That's no way to spend a holiday weekend.

Take a pill! For sun protection?

I was born and raised in California. I've lived in Arizona, New Mexico, the US Virgin Islands and Texas. The common thread? MASSIVE SUNSHINE. I did a story today about a pill that is supposed to offer sun protection in the form of a pill. It's active ingredient is from a fern plant full of anti this free that. It's been used in Europe for 20 years and is now catching on in America. I interviewed a dermatologist who believes the pill can reduce skin cancer. I talked to a patient who takes one pill a day and swears she has fewer skin lesions. She used to go to the doctor every three months, now just yearly. It's a supplement, so the FDA has not evaluated it's claims. Protection from the hot sun in a pill? Now that's cool.

The fans had as much fun as the racers and yes its open to anyone, even me.. I might just take my ride out there next week.

When will the answers come?

Another protest -- more questions remain about the raid at the Rainbow Lounge in Fort Worth. There were a handful of arrests for public intoxication and one injury when FW police officers and agents with the TABC came into the gay bar for an inspection a week ago.

Police are conducting an internal investigation -- as is the TABC and it will be interesting to see if this week yields some answers from either entity. So far, requests for the backgrounds of the officers -- called an internal affairs jacket -- have been stuck in slo-mo. By law, the cops do have 10 days to respond and it appears they may take every bit of that time.

There appears to be no gray in this story -- witnesses tell one story, police tell another ... we'll see if the TRUTH, whichever side that comes from, arrives this week.

Hot night in the city

It was supposed to be an emergency hearing, but it was backed up to Wednesday. I guess it's only an emergency is you are the one without air conditioning. People who live in a Dallas apartment complex say they have not had AC in 25 days. A class action lawsuit was filed on Thursday, but lawyers for the apartment complex they did not have sufficient notice about the hearing. So, 25 days will likely go to 27. Another hot night, or two, in the city.

Get on your bikes and ride!

A new spanish study may be a concern for guys who like to ride bikes 186 miles a week. Scientists say long rides leave me short on good sperm. In fact, only about 4% of the sperm registers as normal. This could pose a big fertility problem. Doctors say it's a combination of pressure on the rump and heat caused by friction. We interviewed a couple of cyclists who ride 220-250 miles a week. One could care less because he has no plans for kids. The other, isn't sure, but plans on studying the study. Scientists are so convinced it's a problem, they advice riders to freeze their sperm before they start training. Finding another sport may also take care of the problem.

Upscale Resale -- A No Sale in Tarrant County?

Why can't Goodwill Industries find a home for it's new GW Boutique that it wants to bring to some city in NE Tarrant County. The boutique would be one of about five in the country and feature high-end, designer women's wear for a bargain price. But, so far two cities (Colleyville and Grapevine) have said thanks, but no thanks.

Right now, Keller is considering the project -- that is far from green-lighted. Other cities are worried about hassles with the drop-off center and hurting other community resale shops. All of those are legit concerns, but as one person said today, "where is the free enterprise"?

It will be interesting to watch this "designer debate" go on -- to see if Goodwill will get the chance to be the good neighbor that it claims it will be if the project ever finds a home.

Authorities seize 496 dogs from Montague County dog kennel

Nearly 500 dogs were seized from a Bowie kennel this morning and taken to a temporary shelter in Fort Worth, authorities said.

The dogs -- 496 in all --  were seized by the Montague County Sheriff's Department and the Humane Society of North Texas early Tuesday morning from the Heddins Ranch and Kennel, said Sandy Grambort, a supervisor with the Humane Society.

"This is not a typical rescue. It is extremely large. Now we are in the midst of this -- one of the largest puppy situations that we have seen in many, many years."

Authorities were told by customers that the owners were not properly caring for the animals, and investigators with the Humane Society were able to verify those complaints.

Parkland Hospital is now paperless. Pres. Obama is encouraging hospitals to transition to electronic records. Not many have, but Parkland is ahead of the curve. Now with a keystroke or two, records are abvailable to doctors and nurses all over the hospital. There are layers and layers of security to make sure patients personal information is safe. You want progress? Old records were secured about a mile away from the hospital and when someone needed them, it would take about a day to get them back to the hospital. They hope it saves time and lives. I worked in a paperless newsroom in Arizona. I hope Parkland's works better than the one we had. This summer, the liquor of choice seems to be vodkas, and they're all flavored.  Some of the popular ones I've seen are root beer vodka, espresso flavored vodka and sweet tea vodka.  The iced tea vodka is great with soda and fresh cut mint, but beware it's pretty sweet.  But the weirdest flavor by far, is bacon vodka!  Right now it's only sold in a few states including Connecticut, but I hope it makes it down to Texas soon.  No one likes their bacon more than Texans, and I'm curious to see how it sells down here.  If you get your hands on some, holler!

Although the cause of the accident has yet to be determined the weather may have contributed in some way. I got the chance to talk with experienced pilot about the flying in such conditions. See the green on the radar, that he says looks like an 8 out of 10. He says not just lighting and rain but ice at that altitude could have added to the dangers for the pilot and his passengers.

Here 'Wi' Go Again

The letter combo, W & I has been making a name for itself. In Lakota mythology, 'Wi' is the name for one of its most supreme gods. More recently the guys at the postal service thought 'WI' should be used to abbreviate the state of Wisconsin. But 'WI' has become much more.
Everyone has heard of the Nintendo Wii. The company said the Wii sounded like 'we', which emphasizes that the console is for everyone. Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. Just Wii. I recently stumbled across the WiWi Kitchen near the SMU campus in Dallas. The company says its actually pronounced Wia-Wia, but don't ask me Wia.

Mavericks lose Brandon Bass to Orlando

brandonbass.jpg When the Mavericks signed Shawn Marion to a free agent deal it made Brandon Bass the odd man out so today,  Brandon signed a four year deal with the Orlando Magic which will pay him around $18 million.

He was one of Rick Carlisle's most valuable and reliable bench players averaging 8.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in 81 games last season.  Carlisle has repeatedly mentioned this off season that the Mavericks emphasis was to add speed and athleticism to the lineup during the off season and Bass didn't fit that mold.  Brandon will most likely get a chance to start in Orlando since Hedo Turkoglu has left for Toronto.
ORL_Gortat_Marcin.jpg
The Magic outbid Cleveland and New Orleans to get Bass and that's also good news for the Mavericks since they probably won't be able to retain Marcin Gortat, who the Mavs have already submitted an offer sheet to.

Expect to hear about Gortat joining the Mavericks, very soon now.

Anger Management..the software

I would not want to work in a call center. People who call in for product help or information probably already have a chip on their shoulder. I know, because I've done it before. If they had the software that UT Dallas engineers are working on, they would have forwarded my call immedietly to a supervisor. The software actually detects the level of anger in a callers voice, that's when supervisors or managers can jump in and save a customer from saying I QUIT!. That's the goal, customer retention. I'm told a very large telephone company with far less sophisticated software actually saved 200 million dollars just by making customers happy, or at the very least, less angry.

Simple Tips to Save Money on Your AC Bill

If you watched the news tonight, then you saw that AC companies are scrambling to meet a "hot demand". Many companies are working round-the-clock, answering calls for AC maintenance. Well, there's no doubt that sometimes you have to call an expert, but the experts assure me there are things all of us can do at home to increase efficiency and save money during this hot summer.

1. Wash the coils -- a hose will do and go to it.

2. Change the filter -- more often if you have pets in the house.

3. Improve ventilation in the attic -- temperatures there can reach 160 degrees or more.

I'm told all of this will help improve the bottom line until the temperatures cool off.

Everybody, in the pool!

When a Brazilian study involves swimsuits, you just have to do the story. Before you get carried away, the study involved expectant mothers who took part in a water aerobics class. Scientists looked at 71 women and found that mothers to be exercised in the water reduced their need for pain killers during delivery by 65%. We talked to a pair of expectant moms who are taking a class so they won't have to use pain killers during delivery. One mom didn't exercise during her first pregnancy and she needed an epidural. The aerobics instructor says the water is a great low impact exercise that focusses on the stomach and the muscles that surround it. The stronger they are, the easier the delivery. A Baylor-Dallas OB-GYN says that 25% of her patients choose natural childbirth and water aerobics to make delivery easier. The study seems to indicate that the water is fine mom, get in the pool!

It isn't all fast-lane, however; the group must take a two week "vacation" next month as part of recent contract agreements.  Those with vacation time can use it; those without, go unpaid.

Employees we spoke with are nervous about the future, but say they'll focus on doing the job at hand, hoping to make GM the go-to car company, once again.

When painkillers kill

Los Angeles police say they are looking into Michael Jackson's prescription drug history. Many believe his toxicology report may show a cocktail of pain medications in his system. We'll know soon. According to a study, in 2005, painkillers contributed to the deaths of more than 8,500 people. Doctors I interviewed both hoped that if painkillers had anything to do with Jackson's death, it will shine a light on what is becoming a serious problem. At Parkland Hospital, roughly 70% of emergency visits are drug related. The prescription to cure the painkiller danger? Doctor's haven't written that one yet.

NTTA only game in town?

NTTA will vote on raising tolls on the Dallas North Tollway and the Bush Turnpike Thursday. The increase will cost drivers an additional 3-and-half-cents per mile. Coincidentally another big meeting related to tolls will be held Thursday. Leaders representing 9 area counties will discuss the future of toll roads in North Texas. The Regional Transportation Council is expected to approve a resolution that would require any future private or public toll road operators to let NTTA in on the action. The resolution states the operators are "encouraged" to
let NTTA provide it's services so customers would have a uniform system. The resolution also states anyone not working with NTTA would need to provide a written explanation to the RTC as to why. It "did not" state that Tony Soprano would be making a visit if NTTA was not given its share of the deal. JG

You know this will be fodder for critics, who believe that smoking -- especially in the outdoors -- is a freedom issue. But, supporters will say, that it doesn't send the right message to children to see adults smoking in places like parks.

It looks like this will get the go-ahead from Grapevine officials. What do you think, right or wrong? Send me your thoughts.

Adoption vs Euthanasia

The fur is flying in Ferris. Animal control is working hard to adopt animals from the shelter rather than putting them down. Animal Control Officer Misty Clark says she's adopted out about 200 animals. There is also a $40.00 adoption fee which she says keeps the city from losing money. City officials say it's costing taxpayers money, that the shelter is not an adoption agency. The kill time was three days, but now city officals have moved the number of days an animal can stay at the shelter to ten, after that the animal is euthanized. City officials say that Ferris does not need to be in the animal rescue business. About 40 protesters converged on city hall to make their point, a message on one placard may have said it all. Next to a photo of a sad dog, the sign read,  "Don't kill me, I'm just lost." I'm sure we haven't heard the last of this story from Ferris.

It's routine surgery, if it's not on you

Airman Colton Read graduated from Arlington's Sam Houston High School. He joined the Air Force and everything was going well, until he went in for routine gallbladder surgery. It was anything but routine. Family members say they were told a doctor at David Grant Medical Cente, nicked his aortic valve, Colton was rushed to UC Medical Center in Sacramento, Calfornia, but he had lost too much blood and his legs had to be amputated. The hospital is investigating exactly what happened and is promising to get to the bottom of the problem. I don't know what the problem is or what the cure will be, but this I know: There is no such thing as a routine surgery. To learn more about Colton, click on our links section on the home page. Lockheed Martin workers left wondering after Senate vote

F-22 worker Dave Power saw the news all over workers' faces on Tuesday afternoon.

The Senate had voted to cut financing for seven additional F-22 warplanes from the defense spending bill Tuesday. The move left man workers wondering what the Senate's decision could mean for their own jobs.

"I don't have a crystal ball or something to tell them exactly what's going to happen," F-22 worker Dave Power said. "It certainly does take the hope away that they will have a job later on the future to rely on."

The Cowtown Report

This is the first installment of The Cowtown Report. It might die in a week, but I hope to keep you informed of what's going on out West.

The Fort Worth City Council meet Tuesday and discussed a variety of issues. Here is a quick breakdown of what happened at City Council and around the city:

  • The city may look into raising its storm water fee 50 cents to offset the rising costs of trash pickup, but it likely would not go into effect until next October.
  • A Diversity Task Force has been developed to revamp the city's policies and educate employees. The City put the task force in place after the city became embroiled in the Rainbow Lounge incident.
  • The City released the names of the Fort Worth police officers involved in the Rainbow Lounge incident. One officer has been suspending more than once for previous violations. Fort Worth is set to release more names Wednesday.
  • The City Council unanimously approved a resolution to ask the U.S. Attorney to open an independent investigation into the Rainbow Lounge incident.
  • The Senate pulled the plug on the F-22 project.
Another quick item about the Rainbow Lounge. Fort Worth Police Chief Jeffrey Halstead expects to revamp the city's bar inspection policy in the next three weeks. The investigation into the officers' actions should be done in the next 21 days, he said.

More later...

There is something in the air

Can you feel it? There is something in the air.  The Dog Days of Summer, the sports dead zone, are almost over. FOOTBALL IS NEAR! You can feel the buzz. Fantasy leagues are starting up, the Cowboys roll into San Antonio in less than a week for training camp and the college football rankings are starting to come out. And, you can't forget the Friday Night Lights of high school football.  It's like a sports Springtime on the verge of blooming.  Even in this economy, there is something about the anticipation of football in Texas getting ready to fire up again.  It's something to look forward to that has nothing to do with the latest housing numbers, layoff numbers, the healthcare debate, etc. You know what I mean.  It's like getting ready for a vacation that lasts through Fall into Winter.  For me it is especially exciting, the Cowboys play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first game of the regular season in Tampa.  As a former news reporter/anchor in Tampa,  my phone will be burning up with text messages from the tailgate to the first touchdown with trash talk from all sides.  AHH YES, I can feel it in the air. BTW, I'm rooting for the Cowboys.

Javier's!

If you want to go out ingocnito, don't drop by Javier's.... but if you want a stylish night out, and have all eyes on you, definitely hit up this Dallas institution!  On the night that we covered Javier's, I ran into an old high school classmate, a few friends... and my husband!!  He was having dinner there, but we didn't expect to run into each other (you can imagine his surprise when a camera crew arrived at his table!) :)  I have been there on many occassions, and funny, I always order the same thing, Pescado Veracruzano (a typical fish dish with a tomato and olive sauce).  And a Mexican Martini is my new favorite cocktail!  I used to drink them in Austin at Trudy's, picture below, courtesy of the 'Coffee and Queso Blog':

While Trudy's will always hold a place in my heart (Come on, they put olives in theirs!) I think Javier's have taken their place, while I'm in Dallas :)

Tobacco Ban

Grapevine joined other cities by outlawing it in neighborhood parks, athletic fields, Pleasant Glade pool and the Botanical Gardens.

Park goers we spoke with today thought it was a good idea, citing safety concerns and the need to set a good example.  But there is concern from a few tobacco-selling businesses we talked to.  They said it will hurt their business and could start the slippery slop of "what's next?" on the ban list.

What is the cost of breaking the law in Grapevine?  Jump on over to the33tv.com.

Massive growth potential

barry blog.JPGThis is a blog, so I'll make a long story short. No pun intended on a very serious issue. Many kids out there simply don't have the hormone that allows them to grow. It's a pituitary gland thing. The hormone can now be manufactured, allowing more kids to have growth therapy and grow to their ideal height. I met a 16 year old kid who was 4-7 when he started and is now 5-4 and will likely be six feet tall, just like his dad. He was kidded a lot when he was short and that bugged him, but now he's just three inches shorter than his younger brother. Thanks to modern medicine, things are looking up, in a good way, for short kids.

TAKS Cheating at DISD

This week we found out there was a second incident of TAKS test irregularities at Lang Middle School in Dallas.  The Texas Education Agency says it have reason to believe there was cheating on the 7th grade writing portion of the test.  You'll recall just last month 8th graders had to retake the math portion of the test because of irregularities.

DISD has told us it was an adult not a student who committed the cheating. But who we won't know until an investigation is complete is September.

So what are the consequences?  Here's what the Texas Education Agency told me.

If it was someone with a certification, such as a teacher, that person could face a 3rd degree felony criminal charge and a revocation of their certification.

If it was the school district or an administrator, the consequence will be determined based on the severity of the incident.  They could actually lose their academic rating.

DISD has until September 1 to turn in investigation results to the TEA.  We should then who is responsible,.

Money, it's a gas, but keep your hands off of my stash..

Minimum wage earners are getting an 11% raise tomorrow. It jumps from $6.55 an hour to $7.25. The workers I interviewed were thrilled because they can really use the money. It's hard to raise a family on $7.25 an hour. Many economists say the wage hike is just moving money from one pocket to the other and it will actually end up hurting job seekers. Here is the theory: If you have to give a bunch of people a raise, you are unlikely to hire more people. An SMU economist told me the raise comes at a bad time (read bad economy). The national unemployment rate is now 9.5%. Some say the wage hike will add to that number. Employers, already short on cash may wind up saying, keep your hands off of my stash.

Gary Patterson turned down big programs to stay at TCU

coach_patterson_gary.jpgTCU Football coach Gary Patterson has a 72-27 record at TCU and four bowl game victories but he still has much more to accomplish in Fort Worth so he turned down lucrative head coaching positions in the SEC to remain with the Horned Frogs.

Patterson told me today that Auburn and Tennessee came calling during the off-season and wanted to hire him but not all of his staff so he turned those schools down.

Patterson is very loyal to his staff and has given much of the credit for his success to his players and his assistant coaches.

Patterson is about to embark on his ninth season as the TCU coach when practices for the fall start on August 9th, the first actual workouts of camp start on August 10th.

Military RX? Beware

By now you've heard the story about the North Texas Airman who went in for gallbladder surgery and ended up loosing both legs. As horrible as this sounds similar cases have been reported in military hospitals around the county. The current law  allows military doctors to often make these life threatening mistakes without any consequences. Because victims and their families are not allowed to sue military Doc's the rate of negligence cant be measured. Many people don't file complaints and those who do often find themselves dealing with the same people who are to blame. Scary scenario for the men and woman who protect our country.

Ford Phenom from Dallas redesigns Taurus

It all started with a sketch pad and some pencils. Dallas native Earl Lucas loved to draw, doodle and design since he could walk. Lucas attended the Arts Magnet High School Booker T. Washington in Dallas. Then, he went to the College for Creative Studies in Detroit.

When he graduated from college, he knew he wanted to draw and get paid for it. His first big, cool gig was designing custom interiors for the private jets owned by the Sultan of Brunei. He got to design with gold and high end wood and metal materials, spare no expense. ARE YOU KIDDING ME! HOW COOL IS THAT?

But, THAT was only the beginning for Lucas. In 1998, he went to Ford Motor Company to design stuff for cars. Now, in 2009 he is the guy that totally redesigned the struggling Ford Taurus. Lucas sexed it up, put in some aggressive lines, gave it a confident front end and upgraded the look and feel of the interior. The new 2010 Ford Taurus will be in show rooms soon and the pencil behind the production was from Lucas and his team.

Not bad for a guy who like to sketch at Booker T. Washington High School. Designing jet interiors for the Sultan of Brunei was pretty cool too.

Rangers Pitcher Vicente Padilla has Swine Flu

padilla.jpgThe Rangers have confirmed tonight that starting pitcher Vicente Padilla has the H1N1 virus, commonly known as Swine Flu.   He was away from the team while contagious but rejoined the club in Kansas City tonight.

Rangers blogger T.R. Sullivan says in his MLBlog, just to be safe, the Ranger sent him back to the hotel rather than have him sit in the dugout.

Several other Rangers players have been dealing with the Flu this week but so far, Padilla is the only one who has tested positive for H1N1.

Padilla is expected to take the mound on his next scheduled start, Tuesday night against the Tigers at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington

Here is the Rangers official statement on Padilla's diagnosis.

Swine flu returns. Correction, it never really left.

The swine flu, now known as H1-N1. You remember it don't you? Actually, it never really left. Dallas County health officials tell me after the massive media blitz this spring, it actually peaked. Everyone stopped covering it, and it peaked! In fact, right now it's probably as wide spread as it was when everyone was talking about it. Brace yourself for more stories. A vaccine is not expected until mid October and the flu season is expected to get rolling earlier than usual. That means everyone is going to have to get a seasonal flu shot, then come back later for a swine flu shot. Vaccines are being tested all over the world, including Houston in hopes of having 160 million doses ready for the U.S. by mid October. Until then, wash your hands, cover your cough and if you feel like you have the flu, remember this: The season flu does not exist in Texas in July.

Basically pet owners are not able to afford their furry friends so they bring them to the shelter. Without families who adopt, the shelter will have to put the animals to sleep.

Celiac disease, so misunderstood

How many of you have actully heard of celiac disease? Okay, some of you. But many have never heard about it, and if they have, they didn't know about the symptoms. That would include Patti Crites who says she was misdiagnosed for four years. That's four years of terrible stomach issues. I think you know the kind I'm talking about. If not, here you go: Patti knew every restroom stop on the tollway to and from work. That was necessary until her doctor diagnosed her with celiac disease. It's caused by gluten, which is bread, wheat, actually, almost everything you can think of. Patti was told to simply go on a gluten free diet, which she did, and amazingly within two weeks she was cured. Actually, cured is not accurate. There is no cure, but Patti now has a misunderstood and underdiagnosed celiac disease under control.

Who Should Pay for Injured Dallas Cop?

The questions and controversy just keep coming surrounding the plight of Officer Alex Garcia, who was injured during a special assignment in Colorado. First, insurance refused to pay to fly Garcia home from Denver because the trip was not considered an "emergency". That was the beginning of the calls for the city to do the "right thing".

Now, there are questions about Garcia's workman comp. Another city insurance carrier has denied his claim, saying his condition (the aftermath of blood clotting) is not an injury that is covered. That has rankled police colleagues, who are calling for fairness for this officer.

So you have a cop -- who was giving back in the Explorer program, that is geared toward troubled youth, he gets sick/injured while on duty and now the city won't pay. What do you think? .. what is the right thing to do? Give me an earful of your comments.

Lightening strike sparks fire in North Richland Hills

A storm ripped through the North Texas area Sunday evening sparking fires in Arlington, Hurst and Fort Worth, but no major injuries have been reported.

At the Shadow Creek Apartments in North Richland Hills, the storm hit around 7 p.m. and lightening caused a fire in the upstairs unit, fire officials said.

"It was like lightening hit inside my apartment," Cherri Kehoe said. "My TV went off but none of my electricity went off."

Just a few doors down, Rayburn Hatfield heard the noise and knew lightening hit close, but he didn't think it had hit a unit.

A few minutes later, he smelled the smoke and walked out to a cloud of dense white smoke.

Home is where the heart is

Airman Colton Read had his legs amputated after a botched gallbladder operation. He's 20 years old and went to Sam Houston High School in Arlington. He's a Texas through and through. His family lives here, he wants to return but he's still in the ICU and is facing eight weeks of rehab. His entire family is in California's UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. Today, the city of Fort Worth started a Colton Read Benefit Fund. Employers have donated air and hotel miles to family members. Colton's grandmother says north Texas has come through in a way that the only way they can return the favor is to pay it forward. I don't think it's needed. I'm guessing the good deeds didn't come with strings attatched.

Jerry and Wade have high expectations for the Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys received the rock star treatment as they arrived in San Antonio.

"You know we have same percentage of Cowboys fans in San Antonio as we do in Dallas" said Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to open up his state of the team address.  " We know we're home and that's why come here , a huge fan base of support."

Many of the fans couldn't wait until tomorrow's first practice of training camp to get their Cowboys fix, so they headed to the Grand Hyatt to take pictures and get autographs of the players they haven't seen since the last training camp in San Antonio two years ago.

"I was speechless" said Cowboys fan Kristi Wright. "Everyone else was fumbling for their phones, my husband has been a fan since he was little. And we all got matching tattoos!"

Some of the excitement from the players matched the fans.  "Besides the people in El Paso, we always get the warmest welcome here" said Cowboys Defensive Tackle, Jay Ratliff.
"You know the way everything ended last year, we wanna try to get some things going in a positive way."

The Cowboys could return the love this season just by reaching the playoffs,  something they haven't done in 12 long seasons. That was just one of the many topics Head Coach Wade Phillips and Jones discussed during the Cowboys State of the Team address.

"I think it's so motivating to me and influential to not have won a playoff game as long as it's been" said Jones.  "It's big to me, and it's important that it's big to players."

But if the Cowboys fall short of Jerry's expectations, many feel that Wade Phillips won't receive another chance to get it right.  That doesn't seem to bother the Head Coach who enters training camp with no fear of losing his job.

"I don't worry about my job." Phillips said.  "I worry about the job I'm doing, that's the way it's always been."  Then Jones pledged his continuous support saying he doesn't need to share any of his thoughts on the future of his coaching staff.

Jerry went on to say that Wade's coaching status is not a factor with his players, so right now the cowboys are talking the talk but they begin walking the walk tomorrow afternoon at 2:15 for the first practice of training camp.

The 33 Sports will be at every practice during training camp.  Keep checking our blog here at The 33tv.com and follow our updates during practice on twitter at twitter.com/davecrome.

Joe DeCamillis brings inspiration and intensity to Cowboys Camp

Joe DeCamillis is still wearing his neck brace as a result of the injuries sustained in the collapse of the Cowboys indoor practice facility and Wade Phillips knows the players notice the kind of effort that's coming their special teams coach.

"He's a tough son of a gun" said the Cowboys head coach.  "It takes toughness to do your job sometimes and this shows the players that this guy is working hard"  Wade hopes it will toughen up his team to not complain about the nicks and soreness that will start popping up later this week. "Don't cry to me about feeling tired today" Phillips advises.

If anyone should feel tired, it should be DeCamillis.  He has to sleep in an upright position with the neck brace, his bed is made up of a high backed chair.  When two-a-day practices begin tomorrow, Joe will be among the first on the field at 8:50am. "We have changed practice, special teams will be the first emphasis of practice, that will start of practice with a lot of enthusiasm" Phillips said.

Just as advertised, the very of first practice kicked off at 2:15pm today...with special teams.

After practice DeCamillis talked for the first time since the collapse of the indoor practice facility.  He didn't want to get into specifics about the day of the accident but called his recovery the biggest challenge of his life and then expressed his thankfulness for the outpouring of support from his friends and family.

Also at the first practice today, injured Cowboys scouting assistant Rich Behm who was back to work in helping to evaluate the talent at this camp.

Was Roy Williams bluffing about not talking to the media?

A couple weeks ago, after making an appearance in Austin, Roy Williams hinted that he might not be talking to the media this year.  He squashed that notion after the first practice of the Dallas Cowboys Training Camp.

"We are just trying to win ball games, you know, so we're not there yet but we're on a football team that has high expectations to win the Super Bowl" Williams said.   I want to get to the playoffs and just win the whole thing; that would just make my life a whole lot easier."

Williams has been a target of criticism for not clicking with Tony Romo after his arrival last year but he thinks after working hard with Romo during the off-season, that will all change.

"We're ready but we have a lot of work to do" said Williams who wore his old college #4 to practice today.  " I don't think we can go out and play a game right now, but I think that in two weeks, three weeks, we'll be ready to go.  We had a whole month off so now we have to get the cobwebs out and get this thing rolling once more."

Williams has some mighty lofty expectations as he assumes the #1 receiver in the Cowboys lineup after the departure of Terrell Owens, but he's keeping the mindset simple. "My expectations are just to keep things going good for me." Williams said.  "I think that a good receiver makes a quarterback look good.  No matter where the ball is I get paid to catch the football, and that's what I do."

This was the first training camp that Williams has been a part of after being traded here during the regular season last year and was excited to see a crowd of 7,292 to watch practice inside the Alamodome.

"Yeah, it's a little different from what I've seen" said Williams"   "Last year we opened up practice in Detroit for the first time and there were probably about 100 people."

Desmond Purnell will have more on the first practice during the sports tonight on The 33 News at 9pm

Collin County Appraisals

Less Drama Equals More Wins For The Cowboys

DSCN1899[2]

This year's Cowboys Training Camp is unlike any other in recent memory. The Cowboys won't have to worry about any controversy surrounding Terrell Owens, No one's discussing the troubled past of Adam Pac-Man Jones... And hey, now that Tony Romo is single again... No one's talking about Jessica Simpson. In other words, The Cowboys enter training camp with no distractions... but for how long?

Today I asked Cowboys Linebacker, DeMarcus Ware if he anticipated a drama free season, Ware responded by saying, "Have you heard anything yet? (silence) Alright then, I feel the same way. Usually you been done heard something now. I think you have a lot of team players, a lot of guys who are trying to feel a lot of guys shoes, trying to get ready for the season. I think it's gonna pan out."

Receiver Roy Williams told me distractions are just a part of the game. "I don't care what team you're on, there's always distractions. When I was in Detroit there were still distractions. In Dallas, you're gonna have distractions. Somebody's going to make something up or something's going to happen, that's just the way it is, Williams says."

Last season, The Cowboys didn't handle those distractions very well... Their 1 and 3 record during the month of December, capped off with that 44 to 6 season ending loss to Philadelphia was proof of that. So the Cowboys feel if they can fly under the radar, for as long as possible... that may remedy some of the drama.

Receiver, Patrick Crayton says, "I think it's a fare assessment because the media doesn't have a story yet. You guys will find something here in a little bit. You'll bring up something in the past that has happened, you'll dig up something. So we'll handle it a little differently this go around."

Instead of focusing on the media, Hall of Famer Michael Irvin suggests a different approach to avoid the drama and it doesn't sound too hard... just win.

The Playermaker says, "You don't want the drama from the side show. You want the drama for the wins. You want the drama from beating another team. Those things are coming. That's what you want. Hopefully for The Dallas Cowboys that will come."

So this year's team may not be as compelling, but if that means The Cowboys winning their first playoff game in 12 years... I'm sure it's a sacrifice Cowboy Fans will gladly make.

Ready for the worst

There was a pretty good scare in Fort Worth today where hundreds of people were evacuated from a Bank of America facility on north Beach street. First calls to area hospitals said a thousand people may be involved in what at first appeared to be some form of gas leak. People did not feel well and were taken to hospitals. The thousand number was downgraded to about 200, of which fewer than fifty people actually went to the hospital. The hospitals were ready for the worst. JPS received 19 people, while Texas Heath Fort Worth had about 20 patients. A lot of people all at once, but the hospitals prepare for such events. Today, ER doctors and nurses were ready for the worst, what they got was best case scenario. Still, they practice several times a year, just in case 50 or so ER patients grows to 1000.

It's A Hard Knock Life For Romo

Yes, he's adored by hundreds of fans, but it's not easy being Tony Romo

"As you get older, you understand that not everyone's going to like you. Not everybody is going to want to cheer for you," Romo said.

Tony has faced his fare share of criticism over the off season, mainly for the attention he's gained away from the field. Critics have accused Tony of putting too much time into his golf swing and not enough into his preparation for the upcoming season. Over the last month, more has been made of who Tony is or isn't dating; than the fact he has yet to win a playoff game. But now that he's entering his 3rd full season as a starter, Tony has learned extra criticism comes with being the quarterback of America's Team.

Romo says, "When you play the quarterback position, all those things are put on the table. You can either handle all the stuff that comes along off the field, and you can handle all the stuff that's on the field and if you can't, then your not going to last very long. That's part of being good at what you do."

Public perception isn't always reality according to Romo. Tony says he's always been focused on football and plans on the hard work paying off this season. Romo says if critics disagree with how he lives his personal life, then that's their problem, not his.

Romo says, "There's nothing about me I'm going to change. You don't get to this position being something you're not. The only way to get better and achieve your goals is to keep plugging away. The secret is just hard work."

Be sure to catch our story on Tony Romo and the rest of Day Two of Cowboys Training Camp tonight on The 33 News at Nine.

Welcome to the NFL...rookies

wideWhen the 12 Cowboys draft picks arrived at Valley Ranch for their first workout of rookie camp, they felt a little overwhelmed to be in the big show, but they were only competing against fellow rookies.

Then the veterans arrived for the OTA's and Mini Camp and their taste of the NFL got a little saltier.  Now that they've put on the pads for the first two-a-day workout of training camp, Bradie James had to chuckle a bit about what those rooks are going through.

"Oh some of the rookies, they're learning." James said.   "It's not a game that you play in shorts and jerseys.  This was the first day with pads, the guys were getting a little roughed up, but I think the rookies look decent. You have to be consistent.  You can't celebrate one play and have a down play; you can't take a play off, you have to be right every play."

Just a few of the lessons Bradie is trying to teach some of the youngsters who have five more
practices before the new week arrives.  DeMarcus Ware still vividly remembers his rookie season in 2005 coming to the Cowboys from Troy State.  He's now doing his best to mentor another player from a small school, Jason Williams from Western Illinois.

"The thing is right now he's listening, he's listening and he's learning as much as he can" Ware said about the first player the Cowboys drafted this year with the 69th overall pick. "  He's an athlete just in general and he had a great first day today in half pads on.  A lot of the guys who are rookies, they were learning and just moving forward."

You're looking for leaders on the Cowboys?  Looks like you just found two of them in James and Ware.

Home sweet home

Dallas police officer Alex Garcia was stuck in Denver. Not at the airport, in a hospital. He was there during a police explorer convention when he became super dehydrated and suffered a blood clot. He was there for two weeks because the city's insurance company would not pay to have him flown home via air ambulance. A local car dealer who lives in McKinney heard about the family's plight and pulled out his credit card and booked a flight for him. It cost $7,500.00. At first it was anonymous, but everyone wanted to meet the guy who did what the insurance company wouldn't do. Today we got to meet Eugene Knies, the man with the credit card and big heart, and Eugene got to meet Alex and his wife Rosa. I'm glad I was there. Most stories are people doing people wrong stories. Everything about this story was right, except that it had to be told at all.

Wade maintains that "Touch Football" won't hurt his Cowboys

cowboy fansThe first day of two-a-day workouts brought 8,686 fans to the Alamodome today and though the Cowboys were in full pads for the first practice, they only practiced in shoulder pads for the second workout.  No matter the what pads they wore the edict remained the same from Wade Phillips....NO hitting!

"My Dad ( Bum Phillips ) practiced with shorts and shoulder pads every practice. It was still live" Phillips said, maintaining that his men are still required to go full speed and get to the spot of the tackle.

"Well, we work tacking drills, we work at getting to the position to be able to hit somebody, and we work on wrapping up and doing those things in other drills." said Phillips. "Some of it is just you've got to run into somebody and wrap them up.   You don't need them tackling people to the ground all of the time, but you need to get them into the position to be able to make the tackle, and that's what they are doing."

Even though the defensive players lick their chops to get able to do some hitting, they have to wait until the pre-season games and that seems just fine to DeMarcus Ware.  "You gotta get that edge thing back; seeing all of the balls, and getting off.  Learning the guy you are going against even though you just go against him in practice, they know you just as well so it's a little bit harder. So I'm just trying to get to where I need to be" Ware said.

Phillips does not believe that the lack of tackling will hurt this team resulting in missed tackles during the season.

"They do bang them, and they do bump them with their shoulders and so forth; they grab and knock the ball and pull the ball out, and you work on those things" Phillips said.  "You don't necessarily have to take them to the ground to be able to get in position to be able to tackle.  If a guys not a good tackler then we'll work extra on some of the specifics.  A lot of is getting into the position to tackle and not the hitting itself."

More touch football continues at the Alamodome tomorrow with one practice at 2:15pm.  The 33 Sports will be at every practice of  Training  Camp and make sure to check back with us often for the very latest on the Dallas Cowboys

Cash For Clunkers -- A Deal or a Dud?

There is much-debate about the government program that allows people to trade in an older model car for a new one, along with a rebate.

Some car dealers in North Texas say they haven't seen a dime in reimbursement from Uncle Sam and are operating on the hook for hundreds of thousands of dollars in rebates. Consumers too are worried. Some have signed paperwork saying if the government doesn't pay the dealer, they must give back the cash. No doubt a recipe for confusion and in some cases anger.

The government is promising more cash and a better system -- time will tell if those promises are honored and whether this was a good deal, or a bad one.

Life After T.O.

For better or for worse, The Cowboys have said good-bye to Terrell Owens, and say what you will about T.O., but for all the controversy he brought to Dallas, he had just as much production. So with Owens out of the picture, the remaining Cowboy receivers, know they're going to have to earn the respect of opposing defenses.

"I would not prefer to get the respect. If you go into a fight, I'd rather have someone think I couldn't fight, if I got into one, rather than someone be prepared for me. We like the challenge and we're gonna continue to get better everyday," says receiver Miles Austin.

Receiver Roy Williams agrees. "We're gonna fly under the radar. We don't have the big high profile guys that everybody else has but we're gonna do what we're supposed to do and catch the ball."

The Cowboys say they don't have one receiver to replace T.O. They have 3... Dallas is banking on Roy Williams, Patrick Crayton and Miles Austin as a group to get the job done.

Tony Romo says "They've worked their butts off this off season. I think we're a lot deeper than what people think. If we stay healthy, I really like what we got at that position.

Offensive Coordinator, Jason Garrett says, "I don't know if they're going to be fearful or not, but we like are receivers... These guys have all worked hard. We're gonna worry about ourselves... Come that first week of September, hopefully they'll be ready to go, I think they will."

In that case, The trio of Williams, Crayton, and Austin better make the most of their time at training camp. Even when you combine their total touchdowns, Owens still outscored them by one.

Rangers stand pat at Trade Deadline

jon daniels.jpg
Based on their performance the past two weeks, the Rangers believe they can win the American League West or the Wildcard race so when Roy Halladay informed his General Manager on Thursday night, he didn't want to be traded to Texas, it didn't phase the Rangers much.

"It's not a secret, he was one of the more attractive names that was out there" said Rangers General Manager Jon Daniels.  "His club talked about him publicly and we certainly went down that path.  There's 30 clubs in baseball that would love to have him, whether they're in it as we are or if they are younger club, he fits in so many ways, but in the end of the day it wasn't meant to be" Daniels said.  "When we looked at it we said, who do we really want to take out of the starting rotation and who do we really want to bump out of this bullpen, who here deserves to lose their job unless it was an obvious upgrade.  We went after some of those obvious upgrades but when those didn't materalize , we didn't think it made a whole lot of sense to shuffle the deck and bring in guys that were materially better than our own."

The Rangers went into tonight's game against Seattle, three games behind the Los Angeles Angels in the AL West and just a game and a half behind Boston in the wildcard race, but Daniels didn't want to sacrifice too much of the future including pitchers Derek Holland and Neftali Feliz, especially when the club is playing it's best baseball of the year.

"In the end of the day we really like our club" Daniels said.  "We believe in these guys and have the chance to be better in the next two months than the previous two."

Rangers Third Baseman Michael Young agreed. " We have a good team and we're getting better.  Any player would welcome a way for our club to improve, by any way possible. If that meant adding the best pitcher in the game, we were all down with it, without a doubt but you know for whatever reason it didn't happen, we're going to move on and we have a good club now and were going to continue to get better over the next two months" Young said.

One of the key pieces to many of the trades was young Rangers starting pitcher Derek Holland who had a no hitter going into the fifth inning last night before settling for a ten strikeout, two hit victory last night.  Holland's friends made sure to inform him that his name was being tossed out in these trade rumors but he said, it wasn't his motivation on the mound last night.  "I don't let that stuff get to me" said Holland.  My plan, is here to stay here. This is my home I want to be here in Texas."  And it's obvious that the Rangers feel the same way about the rookie.

"He's one of numerous players we were asked about, for good reason" said Daniels.  "We didn't want to trade him six months ago, six weeks ago or 24 hours ago and certainly don't want to do it now."

Holland is one of the many young players that has made the Rangers farm system ranked among the tops in baseball, which Daniels took much pride in on Friday.  "It was very encouraging to hear the players that other teams had interest in. It was third party reinforcement that we do have quality on the way."

Jerry ready for a big time party at Cowboys Stadium

night cowboys stadium.jpgJerry Jones spent the better part of 20 minutes at Cowboys Training Camp trying to paint the picture of the kind of party atmosphere the new Cowboys Stadium will be.

"Picture the experience of the Pavilion at the Nelson, or the infield at the Kentucky Derby, open completely to the event" said the Cowboys Owner/GM.   "We want fans to enjoy a party atmosphere, collegiate, very loose and we want for them to enjoy the participation of  the game."

To accomplish that vision, the Cowboys have created a Party Pass ticket for $29 which will allow the fans to stand on the tall ramps in the end zone of the stadium.  "We sold 10-thousand of them for event with our soccer, Gold Cup" said Jones. "Those people came through with the Party Pass, migrated down to club areas, stood at some of our rail areas where you can hold your drinks.  Several people deep watched the game, or stepped back and watched on the video board. It's a big part of what we want our stadium to be" Jones said.

Right now, the Party Pass will be available for the inaugural regular season game against the New York Giants on September 20th.
jerrynewser.jpg
Jones said it's not just about having a ticket to the first ever game at the stadium, but to help create an atmosphere that fans haven't experienced around here before.  "We want to make this stadium one of the real amazing venues of sports" Jones said. "To have that kind of electricity in the end zone, people at other parts of the stadium will gain energy.  We hope to have a loud stadium when the Cowboys are at home."

Caring for Kamryn

Nice to do a heartwarming story for a change. Today, I met a great family, doctor and nurses. Kamryn is a six-and-a half week old girl suffering from a rare congenital disorder called Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia, better known..thankfully..as CDH. Basically, the diaphragm doesn't form properly and allows organs to fill the chest cavity which makes it hard to breath. Kamryn survived surgery and a ventilator pumped air into her lungs afterwards. She may go home on Monday. Do you want a REALLY, REALLY, happy ending? Monday just happens to be her moms birthday.
