Stabbing suspect shot by Fort Worth police officer

A Fort Worth police officer shot a man was shot this afternoon after authorities said the man repeatedly stabbed a female UPS driver.

The man, who has not been identified, was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth. His condition was not immediately known this evening.

According to police, the man approached the driver and repeatedly stabbed her in the back with a knife at the Bent Tree Apartments in the 2800 block of Randall Way in west Fort Worth.

At some point, the woman was able to break free and escape.

Shortly after 12:40 p.m., a police officer arrived and found the man outside wielding a knife, said Sgt. Chad Mahaffey, a Fort Worth police spokesman. The officer order the man to drop the knife, but he refused.

Another officer arrived and again asked the man to drop the knife, but he again refused. The second officer then shot the man with a Taser.

"The suspect continued to advance on the officer who fired the Taser and that's when the first officer fired multiple shots," Sgt. Mahaffey said.

The officer, who fired the Taser, suffered minor injuries, but it was unclear how the officer was injured.

Sgt. Mahaffey declined to released names, ages or how the Fort Worth police officer was injured. The major case unit would investigate the case, but Mahaffey said it appears to be justified.

The officers involved have been on the force for four and 11 years.
