RIDING FOR WORK

I really need a good 'pick me up' story today and I got it. 34 year old Kwaku Twumasi is from Ghana. He has a Masters degree in Finance from SMU...but he's unemployed. He's started driving around the city with signs on his car looking for work. His car is literally a moving billboard.

I respect Kwaku so much because he sends support back to his family in Ghana. He describes is home back in Ghana as being primitive. The man has worked hard and needs a job. Please, please, please call him if you have any leads on jobs, he's willing to relocate. 940-367-6848

Monday Morning

It takes a lot to get people to look forward to Monday mornings, but tomorrow's commute may do it for some North Texas drivers.

Today a stretch of State Highway 161 opened between State Highway 183 and Interstate 30.

A few businesses we talked to today say it will help them, too, creating more traffic and hopefully more sales.

But not everyone is thrilled.  For some, the expansion is too close to home.

Survial of the Fittest

It's survival of the fittest out at Cowboys Training in San Antonio, but after three straight days of two-a-day practices, The Cowboys showed today that they still have plenty of pep left in their step. You've all heard of "The Lambeau Leap," right? During the morning session today, Jason Witten introduced fans to "The Alamodome Dive," taking out one of the smaller spectators in the process... Orlando Scandrick must have been taking notes because on the very next series, Scandrick knocked the helmet off of Roy Williams... No worries though... Jason, the kid and Roy all lived to tell the tale.

"I was just trying to make a play on the ball so, just another day at camp. I just hope the little boy was alright. He looked a little upset. I checked with him afterwards but he was looking for his mother. He wasn't looking for me," Witten said jokingly.

As for Roy Williams... "I never keep my helmet buckled because I never expect to get hit during practice. He just hit me and my helmet came off. If it were buckled it wouldn't have came off. It looked bad but it was a good play by him. I'm going to have to get him back."

"We are thrilled to be able to announce this partnership with the Dallas Cowboys," said Texas Lottery Commission Deputy Executive Director Gary Grief.  "Cowboy fans will be thrilled with the unique football-related prizes this game has to offer."

"Not only are the Dallas Cowboys among the elite teams in the National Football League, but the team has a strong history of working in their local community through organizations such as the Gene and Jerry Jones Family Arlington Youth Foundation, the Gene and Jerry Jones Family Dallas Cowboys Charities and numerous other non-profit organizations," said Grief.  "The Texas Lottery is extremely proud to partner with the Cowboys' organization to generate funding for the school children of Texas."

"We are thrilled about our new partnership with the Texas Lottery," said Jerry Jones Jr., the Chief Sales and Marketing Officer for the Dallas Cowboys.  "This game will give our fans an exciting new way to be a part of the Dallas Cowboys.  Just as importantly, this program will dramatically help the youth of Texas by supporting education."

In fiscal year 2008, approximately 95 cents of every dollar spent on lottery products by Texas Lottery players was returned to the people of Texas in the form of contributions to education, prizes, retailer commissions and other state programs, with over $983 million going directly to the Foundation School Fund.   The Foundation School Fund is a dedicated account that is administered by the Texas Education Agency and helps pay for public education in the State of Texas.

Nine other teams beat Jerry to the Lottery business..but he's all in now!

The Cowboys are gambling that many of you fans would like a suite for 20 for one of the home games at the new stadium or to get your own private tour of the stadium and the practice facility at Valley Ranch.

To entice you, they have teamed up with the Texas Lottery to create a brand new Dallas Cowboys scratch-off ticket which will cost you five bucks a shot starting on August 17th.

If you don't win a cash prize, you can send in your ticket to a second chance drawing which will include five Dallas Cowboys "Wild Weekend" packages which include a suite for 20 at a Cowboys home game, tours of both the new stadium and the practice facility at Valley Ranch, and pre-game party's for 20

If you've always wanted to go on the road with the Cowboys, five drawings
will provide trips for two including air fare, hotel and tickets to the game.

There will also be 10 drawings for Cowboys Draft weekend which include a trip inside the War Room on draft day, a ride on the Cowboys bus to the draft party and VIP tickets to the event.

Usually Jerry Jones leads the way with corporate partnerships but the Cowboys are actually the 10th NFL team to team up with a state lottery and not even the first in Texas.  The Houston Texans have a scratch off game but will only print 4.5 million tickets.  The Cowboys will print 12 million.  Other NFL teams that have teamed up with local lotteries include the Ravens, Browns, Redskins, Jets, Saints, Patriots and Seahawks.

My grandfather would always come out of the 7-11 after buying his lottery tickets and tell me..."It's for a good cause, the money goes to the schools."  That's the angle Jerry Jones, Jr.  is taking today by saying today, "This game will give our fans an exciting new way to be part of the Dallas Cowboys.  Just as importantly, this program will dramatically help the youth of Texas by supporting education."

I think for every five dollars we pay in school taxes, we should get a Dallas Cowboys scratch-off ticket as well.  C'mon Jerry...work that one out!

Roy Williams downplays hit that popped the helmet off his head

royhelmet.jpg With three straight days of two-a-day workouts, the Cowboys are getting a little testy. One of the big hits today came when Orlando Scandrick layed a lickin on Roy Williams that sent his helmet rolling across the field.

" I'm good,  that's football"  said Williams.  "I never have my helmet strapped up unless it's in the game.  It didn't bother me none - it's just football."

Scandrick is competing with Mike Jenkins for a starting cornerback spot, and when reporters tried to get Williams to talk more about the hit he said, "
I never keep my helmet buckled, because I never intend to get hit during practice.  He just hit me and my helmet came off; if it was buckled it wouldn't have come off.  It looked bad or whatever, but it was a good play by him and I have to get him back this afternoon."

You can see Scandrick's hit and much more on Day #6 of Training Camp, tonight on The 33 News at 9pm.

Red alert in the ER

The Emergency Nurses Association has a very interesting new study. Half of all ER nurses have been physically assaulted on the job. The ER of course is where the sick and the injured go to get help, but all too often, it's the nurses who end up getting spit on, kicked, pushed and so on. Texas Health Dallas was kind enough to allow us into their ER where we interviewed a nurse who has seen it all. It's part of the job, but THD is doing what it can to make the ER a safer place. The hosptial has security cameras everywhere, all monitored 24 hours a day. There are also panic buttons at nursing stations, hospital security walks the hallways and Dallas police officers have a 24-7 presence in the ER. The hospital is also working on a class that will teach the nearly ninety nurses how to defuse potentially violent situations. Hoep it works for the people who are there to help us.

New Heat Guidelines for Texas Athletes

Before you send your kid out for those "2-a-days" you may want to know there are new heat guidelines, that some districts may or may not follow. The recomendations from UIL and the National Athletic Trainer's Assoc. are only advice and not mandates, but still most coaches agree -- the suggestions could save young lives.

It was only a few years ago a Dallas high school lost a young man to heatstroke after several intense practices, so the threat is real. Problem is it can be tough for parents to find out their districts policies on heat, so dig deep and ask questions -- because even though heat-related deaths are rare and the percentages low -- if it's your kid, it's one too many.

Cowboys linemen throw down during 11th practice of Camp

It took 11 practices to see the first fight of Training Camp and it was between, who else, the linemen.   After Bobby Carpenter intercepted Tony Romo's pass and took off the other way,  defensive lineman Jay Ratliff delivered a crack back hit on offensive lineman Marc Columbo, knocking him to the ground, then the fists started flying.

fight.jpg Wade Phillips looked into the skirmish and was surprised that linebacker Keith Brooking wasn't involved.  "I thought Brooking really (would be the first to fight), because I've been around Keith and he's normally the first guy to get into a fight so I'm glad he didn't." Phillips said.

He wasn't surprised that the first skirmish came a week into workouts. "Yeah, I think the more you get into it, the edgier you get when things happen.  The players are fine, it's a thing that happens in football" Phillips said.

The coach wouldn't be surprised if he didn't see another scuffle tomorrow "Like I said yesterday, the grind is going to set in" said Phillips.  "I think tomorrow's double day is going to be a test for them, because we had a good practice today and we did some running after practice so we'll see how they come back tomorrow."

You'll see the video of the first fight of camp tonight on The 33 News at 9:00pm

Now that's a cell phone application!

Sure, it's for doctors, but still. It's called OB Airstrip. Doctors download it, sign into a secure site and can monitor the vital signs of mothers and their child while in labor. So the doctor can be at the grocery store, movie theater or at home and check in. The mom we talked to was in labor for 14 hours, when her doctor wasn't by her bedsite, she was still being monitored, which is like being bedside. The doctor we interviewed said she spends just as much time in the room with patients, but the application just adds another layer of safety for the patient. Sounds like a good phone app to me.

Is Arlington Spending Too Much Money On "Jetsetters"?

The new Cowboys Stadium has increased corporate traffic at the city's airport substantially. During the George Strait concert, the corporate jets quadrupled -- so city leaders -- seeing a good opportunity to tap into those wealthy visitor dollars decided to pour millions into a new terminal building.

If you have seen the old terminal then you will agree it is very used up. There are visual cracks on the exterior -- still some argue that a multi-milion dollar terminal isn't money well-spent when it's spent on people who "fly in and then fly out".

What do you think -- good investment or too much cash for the jetsetters? ... Let me know.

Sam Hurd... Odd Man Out?

Cowboys Head Coach, Wade Phillips says he wants no tackling at practice, but cornerback Terence Newman couldn't resist the urge to get a little pop on tight end, Martellus Bennett today during goal line drills. Bennett banged up his hand a bit but says it's nothing serious, just the bumps and bruises that come along with training camp.

Meanwhile receiver, Sam Hurd continues to impress by making a number of eye brow raising catches. Many have already penciled Miles Austin in at that number 3 receiver spot, but Hurd says he's never felt like the odd man out.

"I don't feel that way. I feel like we're all out here having fun. My coaches are telling me to keep up the good work. I got God blessing me. I don't feel like I'm forgotten. What everyone else thinks, I can't worry about that. I just got to focus on what I'm doing on the field," says Hurd.

Be sure to catch our feature story on Linebacker Anthony Spencer tonight. With Greg Ellis gone, it's now Spencer's turn to shine. Catch that story on The 33 News @ Nine!

Bittersweet day for Cowboys Draft Pick Robert Brewster

robertbrewster.jpgHe always imagined the day he signed his first NFL contract as one of being extreme joy but today was a bittersweet for Cowboys third round draft pick Robert Brewster.  Happy because he finally signed his deal but disappointed because an injury will force him to miss all of his rookie season.

Brewster tore a pectoral muscle in the weight room after mini-camp in June and had to have surgery to repair it which will take the entire season to heal.  Right after the Cowboys signed him today, they put him on the physically unable to perform list.  He was the last of the 12 draft picks to come to terms with the team.

Brewster never missed a game at Ball State where he won MAC Conference honors for his work on the offensive line.  He spent the off season backing up Marc Columbo at right tackle.

Arena Football League is done leaving Desperados wondering what's next

desperadoslogo.jpgAfter suspending operations for 2009 earlier this year, the Arena Football League has gone one step further and has now suspended operations indefinitely.  There has been no official announcement from the League offices but Dallas Desperados COO Shy Anderson confirmed the stoppage to us this morning at Dallas Cowboys Training Camp.

"Well, I'm personally disappointed because we put eight years into it and the Desperados were one of the top franchises in Arena Football so it's a letdown for me personally"  Anderson said. "It's a letdown for our fans in Dallas but it's a decision that the board members of the AFL made to suspend indefinitely and that's what we have to deal with." The Associated Press obtained a one-paragraph statement the league sent to its teams late Tuesday announcing that it has suspended operations.  The statement said the AFL's board had been "unable to reach any consensus on restructuring the league over the past eight months."

Anderson said he wasn't sure what was next for the Desperados but owners of the Arizona Rattlers and Tampa Bay Storm have told their local newspapers they wouldn't be surprised if some of the franchises find a way to get together and still play in 2010,  possibly with teams from the Arena Football 2 league which is also owned by Arena Football.

The Desperados were one of the AFL's most successful teams averaging more than 11,000 fans per game last year at the American Airlines Center

Candy Cane Case

This issue has been ongoing for about six years now. I talked with lawyers representing both sides today. Plano ISD attorney Charles Crawford told me today that there are actually two separate sides to this lawsuit. One side deals with the districts actual printed policy toward freedom of speech and religion. This issue is actually being heard by the 5th Circuit of Appeals court in New Orleans. The other side of the lawsuit deals with individual employees actions under those policies. The second half of the lawsuit has not headed to court yet.

Candy Cane Case

So I had some frank questions for the attorney representing the families. I asked if he was actually fighting for the religious expressions for the children or for the parents religious views. I mean, I think that most children that are six or seven are really only repeating what they're parents have said. He was quick to point out that the first amendment gives everyone, including children, the right to self expression. When I thought about it, you have to agree that all children are different, capable of different things. Who's to say.

The word of the night "flibbertigibbet"

Ten seconds before our sports director Dave Crome was live on the air, the show director got into his earpiece and said the word of the night is "Flibbertigibbet."  After a loud, "WHAT, NO WAY." Dave responded, "That is not even a word."  Four seconds til air now. I Googled it and told Dave it was a real word and gave him a quick definition. Cue Dave.  Dave rolled into his first story about Cowboys camp. He described a big hit on the field, not missing a beat said, "There are no flibbertigibbets here." The dude nailed it, in context even. So just in case you were wondering what a flibbertigibbet is...here it is according to Dictionary.com.

Word Origin & History:
flibbertigibbet
1549, "chattering gossip, flighty woman," probably a nonsense word meant to sound like fast talking;

Teachable Moment? May not.

Three Grand Prairie police officers and one dispatcher are not working for the next few weeks because police brass found out they received and then forwarded racist emails about President Obama. It was two emails, both were intended to be funny, but they were not, in the most offensive way. Some believe the suspensions fit the transgression. Others say it wasn't and want much more. The ironic part of the story is this: Every single city of Grand Prairie employee went through a diversity training class earlier this year. Tonight, four are suspended without pay. Attention class, attention.

Doctor's will have to pass an examination on nutrition, exercise, psychology and medicine. 66% of Americans are overweight and obesity comprises about 10% of all medical costs. Experts say having more doctors being more informed about obsesity may trim some of those numbers down. Doctor's can take the certification course beginning next year..

Did Superintendent's Personal Life Play A Role?

More questions are being raised about the sudden departure of the Richardson Superintendent, David Simmons. He resigned this week -- seeingly out of the blue. Trustees paid him $300,000 to walk -- with the agreement that neither side would say anything bad about the other.

So what is the deal? .. that is the question so many are asking. A successful school chief doesn't just "walk away" from a $225,000 job, with perks. Officials say rumblings of trouble in Dr. Simmons personal life played no role in in the decision to part ways. "We did not discuss his personal life" .. says board president, Kim Quirk.

North Dallas Crime Spree

So Dallas police say at least seven families almost had their doors kicked in last night. Well, crooks are really getting bold. One homeowner I spoke with said, " Why in the world would a criminal try and rob a home when the residents are probably at home sleeping? " My guess is as good as hers. In reality crooks don't reason as you and I do..that is why they are crooks. I am at least glad no one was hurt. I hope Dallas police get these people off the streets.

Here is number one: If you have an alarm, turn it on..Hello! Also, good lighting always helps. If you have dead bolts, use them. If you don't have them, get them. And most importantly, report suspicious behavior when you see it.
Police said in one of the break-ins the would be burglars actually kicked the front door in and came inside the home. When the homeowner yelled out, the crooks yelled an obscenity and ran out. Dallas police need to get these people off the streets.

Eva loves her some #9

romo and eva longoriaThousands of Cowboys fans were screaming for Tony Romo after Saturday mornings practice at the Alamodome, but only one of them got a hug.  It was none other than Eva Longoria who watched practice with a small entourage from the sideline.

"I'm so happy when the Cowboys do camp in San Antonio because I tell Tony, I was a Cowboys fan before a Spurs fan"  said Longoria who was speaking about her husband, Tony Parker of the Spurs.

Parker wasn't at the practice when Romo came to the sideline for a brief chat.  She was wearing a silver number 9 around her neck, which is Parker's number with the Spurs, but she was willing to make a concession for today.

"This is a number nine for my Tony (Parker) but I'll put it in honor of Tony Romo today.

Josh Hamilton Pics

Well, its been a tough day for Josh Hamilton. As I was doing interviewing people for this story I carried a copy of one of the photos of him that have been released. Even the men were shocked looking at them. I guess its just shocking to see someone in such a compromising place while in a public place like a bar. I do understand that alcoholism and drug abuse is a part of a disease. I truly hope Hamilton is back in control.

As I was researching for this story I watched a brief documentary on the Josh. Did you know that both his parents were killed in a car accident. If I'm not mistaken, his grandmother helped to raise him. It really kind of sheds light on his troubled life. Can you imagine having lost both parents and you're only 28 years old. I think its really easy to judge people when you see them going through hard times. But, sometimes you have to put yourself in a persons shoes and ask yourself, " If I were in that position would I be able to keep it together?" It can be food for thought..maybe something to think about before you give your opinion on the matter.

Cowboys Feel Red Hot in the Red Zone

campsat 033.jpg All camp long we've heard that last year is over and this is a time to start fresh. But some of the images the defenders can't get out of their heads, having to start with a short field and still keep their opponent out of the end zone. Of course the offense and special teams have to share the responsibility for putting the defense into that position and all three of those areas have been a focus during the many practices this week.

Flimsy special teams coverage along with turnovers by the offense helped put the opponents in the Dallas red zone 56 times, a dozen more than 2007, that's quite a weight to lay on the shoulder pads of the defense and that's why they brought in Joe DeCamillis to lighten load.
and has returned the special teams intensity to a special kind of level.

"He's all about playing fast and physical" said Bobby Carpenter who has stayed on this roster with solid play on the special teams the last three years.  "His style is don't worry about making a mistake, go out there and be aggressive down the field and make them react to us instead of them reacting to our return" Carpenter said.

"We really want to establish a sense of urgency" said DeCamillas. "We want to put the importance on it, every single play out. The players have responded to that, trying to practice at a little faster pace during those periods.  We're trying to upgrade the personnel, we have speed and competition at all positions."

That's music to the ears of the defense which overcame the short fields to turn in the NFL's sixth best percentage of holding teams out of the end zone when they got inside the 20.

"If the guys get 7 points hard to bounce back" said linebacker Bradie James.  "When you hold them to field goals it's always good.  In the red zone, the antennas go up and you have to stop them, so they don't put seven on the board" James said after drawing loud applause for stopping Marion Barber in his tracks near the goal line.

"When we're on the goal line we really gotta put our hard hats on" said Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware.  "Having a guy,  #56 , Bradie James, the hammer, laid the hammer down on Barber and stopped the touchdown."

James received congratulations from nearly every defender out there and took pride in pushing Barber bakwards.  "MB is known for scoring, I had to stick my head in there before he hits me back."

It's not Barber that James should look for.  He's got some linemen upset they couldn't create the hole for the touchdown.  "As a linemen you take pride in it " said center Andre Gurode. "You know what, you take pride in it, and I'll look for next shot, a free shot at the linebacker" Gurode said with a smile.

He will get several opportunities because built into many of the 11-on-11 practices are red zone sessions, and since there's no hitting allowed, it's as close to a live drill as you'll get until the first pre-season game on Thursday.

Ware plans on showing off some of the red zone intensity in that game agaisnt the Raiders. "With us being aggressive,  getting on the other side of the line and making sure that we're there instead of letting them lean into the touchdown and make big plays, we have to stop them on the other side of the ball."

The key of course is not having to get into that jam and field position should improve leaps and bounds this year. The addition of DeCamillis along with kickoff specialist David Buehler who is expected to force touch backs nearly every kick. Mat McBriar says he feels great, so getting his punting yardage back should be a major plus.

Then there's the offensive turnovers in enemy territory.  This this team has focused on that as well and this time it includes the green, fines.  Nothing like getting the point across by being hit square in the pocket book.

Cowboys "Commissioner" Williams fines teammates for errors

williams .jpg
As the Cowboys wrap up their second week of training camp at the Alamodome, one aspect of the game that has really pleased the coaches is that the offense has been taking care of the football. There haven't been many fumbles or interceptions and there's a reason for that. Those kinds of blunders are hitting them in the pocket book.

We're talking about fines, that always seems to speak the loudest. The Cowboys had 33 turnovers last year, the most since 2004 when the Bill Parcells led team went 6-10. So in an effort to nip that in the bud...the receivers are leading the way by laying down the law and taking in the cash.

During a routine passing route at training camp, while nearly everybody in the stands is watching the play, the coaches behind the line of scrimmage are looking for something else, any sign of the football.

"You get in trouble if they can see the ball from the back" said receiver Sam Hurd. "Instead of going to the meetings and getting yelled at over and over, you try to do it right. Everybody is doing it right and everybody is holding it across their chest so we're working on a lot of ball security" Hurd said.

Part of their financial security also depends on it.  Miles Austin knows all too well.

"Receivers have fines for mental errors, missed assignments, failing to convert on a route
if you block the wrong guy.  It all adds up" Austin said.  But there is a way to cancel out some of the fines.  ""Get a touchdown, the more you get the more you can mess up."

Of course, that defeats the purpose.  Who is keeping track of all these errors anyway? It's none other than Roy Williams who instituted the system and named himself "Commissioner." Roy adds up the errors as he sees them, writes them on his hand or on receiver coach Ray Sherman's play sheet.

Maybe that's why Roy Williams keeps changing his jersey from 4 to 11 and back to 4, in an attempt to stay anonymous but instead, he's become, notorious.

"He's worse then Goodell" said receiver Patrick Crayton.  "He tries to rule with an iron fist, and it's been bad, very biased, it's been ridiculous so far" Crayton said with a smirk on his face.

Shaking his head, Crayton said, "he writes it down on Coach Sherman's play sheet to keep track but he never writes things about himself. It's always something else when it comes to him.  We don't worry we've got it on film, we make sure to mark it down but he's corrupt!"

Roy's response: "They think I'm a little biased toward myself but when you're commissioner you can do that."

When I told him that Crayton said he was corrupt, Roy promised retaliation.

"Well you know he's the Vice President so he thinks he's second in command" Williams said. "I'm going to fire him because he's given leeway to too many guys."

Williams continued the light hearted barbs claiming that he has fined himself $110 so far.  In the twelve days of training camp the receiving corps has racked up $960 dollars in fines and they're only halfway through camp.  The receivers who make the team all plan to spend the proceeds dining out in Dallas when camp breaks.

The receivers have set a little trend with their kangaroo court, now the kickers are getting into the act, but they're focusing on making it more of a hazing for rookie kickoff specialist David Buehler.  He hasn't done anything wrong in the kicking department but his fellow specalists have had to find a way to shrink his ego

"We're doing fines" said punter Mat McBriar.  "He's a rockstar, this rookie from USC, Mr. Hollywood, he's over there yelling to the crowd.  We see him doing stupid things so we fine him for that"  said McBriar in his thick Australian accent.

Buehler has taken it all in stride.  "I mean hey, you gotta become a fan favorite quick" Buehler said.  "So you gotta make a good first impression quick get the fans on your side, I'm doing all I can!"

Having fun at camp is a must or the or the repetition of the routine will drive you crazy. The Cowboys will go hard here again on Monday  with the last two a day of the week. There is one practice Tuesday, a walk through on Wednesday and then it's game on with the kickoff of the first pre-season game on Thursday night in Oakland against the Raiders.

Be sure to tune in to Inside Sports tonight at 9:30pm for more Cowboys coverage.

Plano First: It Makes Cents

I was really waiting for something like this to come about. A week or so ago I did a story about Plano residents shopping in nearby cities. While it was true, I couldn't help but feel a little sorry for some of the shopping districts in Plano. I've only been in the Metroplex for about eight months, but already I've heard several people say that Plano has had its heyday. It may be just because I'm from up north, but I do feel its very important to support you own area businesses. Some residents may not realize that entire cities can be blighted.

Plano First: It Makes Cents

I really respect the Chamber for launching this new campaign...They are trying to fight to keep that revenue. But, at the same time situations like this at least help to keep all shopping centers on their toes. You've got to reevaluate what your offering customers from time to time...on a regular basis. Right now people are looking to bargain shop, that may change soon, but right now that is what most people are looking for. You must cater to the consumer. In the end, I think Plano residents will get the message.

Lives Lost

Not every day in the news business is a fun or inspiring one.  Today I met a woman whose son was murdered last June as he left a recording studio with his friend and fellow Christian music producer.

26 year old Stephen Swan and 28 year old Matthew Butler were both fatally shot in what is thought to be a robbery.  One of the two men accused, James Broadnax, goes on trial tomorrow.  The trial for the other, Demarius Cummings has not been set.

Both murder victims are described as gifted musicians, kind and giving human beings.

Jean Swan told me today her son wrote music but never sought the attention that could have gone along with it.  She'd like people to get to know his music, since they can no longer get to know the man.

Wade's "new guys" are having an impressive training camp

igor.jpg The Cowboys have had their share of players known simply by their first name. Days of Troy, Emmitt and Michael may be gone but now they've got themselves an Igor.

"He's a real strong guy man, a big ole strong Russian guy" said Cowboys defensive end Jason Hatcher.

The new Cowboys defensive end bench pressed 505 pounds in college, and at the NFL combine he put up 225 pounds, 41 times.

"He's not real pretty, but we like him" joked Hatcher.  Wade Phillips likes him too after coaching the defensive end in San Diego.

"I played with Wade for three years and we ranked in the top five against the run and had a 30 sack season and won a lot of games."  said Olshansky who'se family immigrated to the United States from Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine when he was seven years old. "We won 3 AFC championships (in San Diego) and I have confidence in him as a coach, coordinator and as a person and I hope he has confidence in me to play right defensive end for the Cowboys" Olshansky said.

"He's a very good technician" said Wade Phillips.  "He can run, has good speed and is very flexible for as big and strong as he is.  He's a good solid player that can get better and one that I know a whole lot about in crucial situations. He'll come through for you, when you lose players at positions try to replace as good as can" Phillips said.

While Igor will replace Chris Canty, Wade filled Zach Thomas' linebacker spot with a player he coached in Atlanta, Keith Brooking is a 12 year veteran that's been to the Pro Bowl five times and has been working out all camp with the first teamers.

"The top agenda for the guys on this team is to win games and I admire that" said Brooking brooking.jpg who Wade brought in as one of the first moves after adding the defensive coordinator position to his plate.  "I love to be with guys like that. Football is very important to me, high up on priority list, It's a mans game.  The grind of camp, nothing's easy, There's a lot of sacrifice.  I have been around a lot of players and coaches and see that we have ingredient to build something special and we have to do it now" said Brooking.

One player that Brooking has impressed, plays across the line from him every practice, During his rookie season, Cowboys offensive tackle Marc Colombo played against Brooking in a game and loves his passion for the game.

"He's just a leader, a vocal leader goes out there and plays hard and does his job" Colombo said.

And you can't have too many of guys on the field like that.

Reason For Concern

Alright Guys, Cowboys Training Camp has been silent, boring and uneventful and that's a good thing for this year's team. Last season, the distractions seem to have taken it's toll on The Cowboys and as a result, they missed the playoffs.

So off the field distractions may not be a concern, but injuries sure are. Today, Running back Felix Jones and Tight End Martellus Bennett, two guys who the offense will be counting on heavily, suffered what the team is calling minor injuries. Felix missed some practice time this morning after banging up the same toe that shorten his rookie season. He did dress out for the afternoon session. Meanwhile Martellus, did not dress out for The Cowboys second practice of the day after twisting his knee this morning.

Saturday, cornerbacks Terence Newman (groin) and Mike Jenkins (ankle) suffered injuries. The Cowboys play their first preseason game of the year this Thursday against The Oakland Raiders. The Cowboys have yet to announce if the injured players will suit up for the game.

Witness To An Execution

Tonight you heard me report on a growing trend -- more states are examining the cost of sending offenders to death row. It can cost up to $1,000,000 to prosecute, house and then execute an inmate. In Texas, the average cost of housing one inmate is $47.50 per day -- even with a hefty sentence, like 40 years that is still far less than the price of strapping someone to the guerney in the death chamber.

The "cost" isn't usually an issue that is debated when it comes to capital punishment -- most talk about accuracy and fairness, even the method of execution (lethal injection). Last year, I witnessed killer Michael Rodriquez go to his death inside the Walls Unit. While some would say any "forced" death is grisly, I found it to be very clinical, almost like a surgery. The inmate is strapped to the guerney when the witnesses enter the rooms adjacent to the execution chamber. He/she is given the opportunity to give a last statement -- sometimes it is rambling others times it is as short as "let's go Warden". After that the chemicals begin to flow and the inmate appears to drift off to sleep. Rodriguez actually began snoring -- before taking a couple of deep breaths. A doctor pronounced him dead 7 minutes after the drugs started flowing. It was carried out in a dignified and respectful manner -- very much UNLIKE the heinous crimes these inmates are accused of committing against innocents.

This year 60- thousand Americans will be diagnosed with melanoma. The bad news just keeps coming: This year, melanoma will kill 8 thousand Americans. The study will continue for five years. Hopefully the antigen will do exactly what reseachers are hoping, find melanoma and kill it.

High Voltage: New Chevy Volt Boasts 230 mpg

Wow! 230 miles-per-gallon!  GM says its new Chevy Volt gets 230 mpg in the city and 100 mpg on the highway.

Wait a minute? Isn't the car suppose to get more miles-per-gallon on the highway? Well, as I now understand it, yes and no.

First, GM says the Volt can only go 40 miles on a single charge and it must charge its lithium-ion batteries 8-hours a day.  But, it also has a gas powered, "range extending" engine that powers the generator past the 40-mile mark. So, GM say you can rack up 230 miles per gallon during city driving because you'll barely tap into the gas powered, "range extending" engine.  Meanwhile, if you have a long road trip, one gallon of gas is suppose to give you about 100 miles.

Most importanly to me, the Volt looks great and hopefully it has some performance.  That was always my knock on hybrids and electric cars.  They looked terrible and there was no head snapping acceleration.  Plus, if you really did the math, you weren't saving money in the long run, saving the environment, maybe.

But, the Volt is actually cool enough to buy. And, if it delivers some performance and 230 mpg in the city...SAAAWWEEET.

Profanity vs. Privacy -- up for debate in Burleson

It's the talk of the town in Kelly Clarkson's hometown -- a Burleson drill team member suspended for one game, after school officials found profanity on her "private" MySpace page. Lindsey Wessel says she shouldn't be punished for something that was intended only for a close circle of friends -- but school officials say students who take part in extra-curricular activites are held to a higher standard; a code of conduct that prohibits this kind of posting.

So what do you think? Who has it right here? ... school authorities or Wessel. Attorneys say it does raise a lot of questions about 1st amendment and free speech rights. In this new age of social-networking, there will likely be more of these questions as we all wade through these untested waters.

Textbook Costs

College students I really feel your pain here. Not much has changed when it comes to college books...except they've gotten more expensive. I would really recommend that you check local libraries before buying books from anywhere. This worked for me many times. It doesn't cost a thing to call and ask if they carry a book. Then you can just check it out for free. If that doesn't work, then I would hit the internet.

Now, if you are looking to purchase online there are several websites that can help you. Amazon.com seemed to be really popular among students today at UTD. Our weather lady Rebecca Miller gave me some information on Chegg.com...this was new to me. On this site you can actually rent textbooks for about ten dollars. They have to be returned but still that is not a bad deal. As far as the iPHONE application, it could be really helpful if you already have an iPhone. If you don't have one, you might weigh the cost to see if its worth it in your case.

Burleson ISD statement on drill team issue

* The original concern about the content of the MySpace page was brought to the attention of the drill team director and campus administration by students who were deeply concerned that the content was inappropriate and did not reflect positively on the Drill Team.

** Campus staff did not hack into or visit any personal MySpace site. They did act upon the information that was presented to them by students.

** The student and her parents were advised by district officials that the content of the sire was inappropriate. While there have been media reports and comments by some parties that the demerits were issued for a single word, that information is erroneous. All of the content in question was discussed with the parents

**District officials remain deeply concerned, just as out students are concerned, that some of the information posted on the site was inappropriate. It is our belief that the school organization and the community at large would support our concerns that this type of material does not positively reflect the values we wish to present.

The future is almost now

It's called MAG. The Magnetic Anchoring and Guidance System and when I try to explain it, think Star Treck. You know, when they wave a device over the body, it beeps, and the good doctor makes the diagnosis. MAG is like that only with a magnet. Doctors insert a tiny device via incision or orally, and once it's in the stomach the surgical tools pop out. That's on the inside. On the outside, the device is controlled by a high powered magnet. Here's the benefit: No scar or low scar which speeds recovery and reduces the chance of infection. The technology still needs work and FDA approval. Here to the future of surgery. Now beem me up.

Well, I got a chance to do a story on this huge competition going on in Dallas. There are so many athletes here from all over the country. There are also a lot of athletes here from across the state of Texas...The Lone Star state always has a strong gymnastics showing. This was my first time being on the floor watching everybody perform. Its a completely different experience from down there. I also got a chance to into the warm up room where the athletes were getting feet and hands taped up. True dedication.

So, when I found out I would be covering the Acrobatics competition I really expected all ladies to be performing. Well, I was wrong. Of course I interviewed the two North Texas young men featured in my piece. A lot of guys tend to criticize men in gymnastics. But, I tell you what, it takes a lot of strength to pull off many of those moves. Those guys really have to train hard..and I mean lifting heavy weights to stay in shape. It only make sense, they have to be able to lift their partner and keep them steady in the air, that takes a lot of strength. I'll tell you another little inside secret...when I was young I was in gymnastics too.

Jailhouse doc

I got the grand tour of the Dallas County Jail Health Care Clinic. You want busy? They treat 100 thousand inmates a year. Right now there are more than 600 inmates receiving mental care. Inmates used to be shuttled to Parkland or dialysis clinics. People there say that was dangerous and costly. The new dialysis center and infirmary saves hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. Federal law makes inmate care a requirement. At the Dallas County Jail, justice is blind and the doctors and nurses don't judge. Regardless of the quality of care, I highly recommend going there like I did, with a get-out-of jail free card.

Obama Sotomayor Schools, little to soon or not? What do you think?

I love meetings.  I mean it I really enjoy covering government meetings. I know I'm nuts.  Today I was at DISD.  The board was discussing possible name changes for replacements schools for OM Roberts Elementary and Billy Earl Dade Middle School.  Both campuses are located in South Dallas.  That's District 9, trustee Ron Price's district.  Price is who made the suggestion.

The discussion was very lively today, and in my opinion I don't think the other board members are against the name change because of **who** the schools would be named after, but rather the manner in which this is happening.

Many trustees said it is just too soon, it's out of the naming cycle for the district and both President Obama and Justice Sotomayor don't meet the age requirements, nor do they have North Texas ties.

District policy does all "persons who have attained prominence locally or nationally" to have a school named after them.

I guess we'll find out on the 27th the board has its vote.

Destination Graduation

The city of Plano is not immune to high school dropouts. Like many cities across the U.S. there are at risk youth in Plano that tend to drop out around the eight grade. Minorities and children from one parent homes sometimes fit into this category. I was really encouraged by this program in Plano. Its been around for three years but it has now been expanded to the middle school level. Today I met some of the teachers and students that make up the program. It was a pleasure.

Destination Graduation

Plano has a reputation for having a large number of high school students that usually maintain a 3.9 or higher grade point average. That is really something to brag about. But, with that success the district owes it to at risk children to also try and help them succeed in education. As basic as it may seem, many times encouraging them to stay in school may be good enough. A lot of those children may not get that message at home. Destination Graduation is a two week summer program that teaches the children about setting future goals.

Horse Lovers -- try not to Cry

If you have ever looked into the big eyes of a horse, you know they are next to human. But, what I saw in Denton County today was enough to make anyone cry. These beautiful animals with hip bones protruding so much, it looked as though they were about to punch through hide.

The owner is under arrest -- facing possible jail time and a fine. But, how does this happen? If a livestock owner is feeling financially strapped there are rescue groups that are willing to help. Check out the Humane Society of North Texas -- please look for resources .. it is much kinder than letting this majestic animal, starve.

Animal Abuse

The 76 horses seized yesterday were Arabian horses. In talking with one of the members of the Humane Society there were telling me that the horses are quite expensive. They didn't understand why the owner did not simply try and sale the horses. I guess its possible that he had tried to sale them, but was unable. Right now its just not a good market to buy or sale horses or any livestock. Of course, that still no excuse for neglecting the horses.

As for the case in Mansfield, I was told that no arrest have been made in that case. Police told me that its the second time the owner has been cited for neglected animals. The horses from this location and the ones in Pilot Point will eventually be sold to other owners. Right now the Humane Society does not know how much the adoption rate will be, but stay tuned.

Roy Williams injures his wrist at Training Camp

Just when Tony Romo and Roy Williams were getting their timing down and starting to click at training camp, the #1 receiver goes down with an injury..

It happened in the first practice of two-a-day workouts Sunday in San Antonio.

Roy tracked down a deep pass, couldn't made the catch and then rolled over the top of Orlando Scandrick, landing on his left wrist.

Williams had an M-R-I on that wrist after the practice and the results were negative, listed as a sprain.  For that, Tony Romo was relieved.   "I think that's apart of training camp" said Romo. "Little nicks here and there. It's only a few days, he'll come back and he's worked his butt off so I think if anything it will just help him have fresh legs."

Calling All News Junkies

It's going to be a showdown on several fronts tomorrow.

US Congressional representatives from Democratic and Republican parties will appear together tomorrow in a panel discussions. The "activity" out front is expected to include demonstrations from both sides.

An ownership hearing for the nearly 600 dogs taken Tuesday from an alleged puppy mill in Kaufman County is expected to wrap up tomorrow afternoon. If the Humane Society of the United States is given custody, public adoption efforts will then get underway.

Keep up with the latest here on the33tv.com. Be there or be square. (That was just to see if you're still reading)!

Sting, and I'm not talking the Police variety

There are plenty of insects in north Texas. For most people, they are nothing more than party-crashers. But for about 5% of the population, one sting from a fire ant or wasp can be life threatening. A New York skateboarding legend was stung by a wasp, had a heart attack and died. We talked to a 33 News intern today who has to wear a Medic Alert bracelet when she may be in an environment where there may be fire ants, which in Texas, is EVERYWHERE. She had a hard time breathing one time and had to be rushed to get medical help. Here is the problem with insect allergies, you don't really know it until your stung. An estimated 15 million Americans are at risk for potentially life threatening reactions to insect stings.

A Million to One; No, Actually 3.3 Million to One

12-year-old CJ Ramsey pulled off what seems impossible.  He caught two foul balls from the same hitter, back to back.  Some baseball fans have been crunching the numbers on this and so far the odds are incredible.  The odds of catching a foul ball at a baseball game are about 333 to one.  The odds of catching two foul balls in the same game are about 3.3 million to one.  The odds of catching two foul balls from Josh Hamilton back to back in the same day in the same at bat, ASTRONOMICAL.

7-11 Targeted By Identity Thieves

So that slurpee may have cost you a whole lot more than you thought ... 7-11 has been targeted by identity thieves, who officials say stole 130 million credit and debit card numbers. 3 men were indicted today in New Jersey, one is in custody in an elaborate case of what prosecutors say is corporate hacking.

Unsuspecting customers have been exposed and didn't even know it until now. Experts say even though most of us take precautions to guard against identity theft, this may be one avenue that is almost impossible to prevent ... unless you carry cash and use it.

Here comes the Sandman, then again, maybe not.

The new Johns Hopkins University study ono sleep apnea is like a health alarm clock going off. A real wakeup call. In a nutshell, the study tracked more than 6,000 men and women and found that people with severe sleep apnea had their risk of death rise by 67%. Weight is the big issue here. Sleep apnea increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke. Even car accidents rise because people fall asleep at the wheel instead of bed. The women we interviewed woke up 120 times in one hour. 30 times is considered severe. She slept with a CPAP mask for a bit, then had weight loss surgery and now sleeps like a baby. She's also alert during the day and has the energy to play with her two young boys. Here is the scary part: Most people have no idea they have sleep apnea. Not sure if you suffer from sleep apnea? A sleep study may be a real life saver.

The battle for Governor -- gets interesting, some say ugly

It was an interesting mix at the rally in Dallas as Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison takes on incumbent, Rick Perry -- in the gop race for governor. She was very late for her own party, but not as late as the Mayor of Dallas -- who completely missed her speech. I'm told he was supposed to "surprise" her with his support. Oops!

But, most people were talking about the plane overhead -- pulling a banner that read, "Kay come clean, release your taxes". She called it classless, but I think it's just a sign of more to come -- in what is expected to be an expensive, bruising battle.

School Nurses and H1N1

I didn''t find any school districts that will be cutting back on school nurses. The state of Texas actually does fairly well when it comes to the student/nurse ratio. According to the Centers For Disease Control, Texas averages one nurse for every 841 students. While that may sound bad states like Michigan have a ratio of one nurse to every 4204 students.

According to the Department of Education the workloads for elementary school nurses have remained essentially unchanged since 1999 at about 455 students per nurse. But, in secondary schools workloads have increased 14 percent, from 733 students per nurse to 835. Nationwide there are 25 percent of schools that have no nurses at all.

Bank on this: The future of healthcare

There is always a heated debate about ebryonic stem cell reseacher, so let me be clear, this blog is about ADULT stems cells. More and more people are having their own blood drawn, churned down to stem cells and then frozen for future use in case they get sick. Researchers are performing clinical trials and hope to have major breakthroughs on stem cell therapies that may save lives. Right now there is on-going reasearch that shows promise in repairing heart disease. Scientists are working on cures for everything from diabetes to cancer. That's why people are banking their stem cells. They're healthy now, but if they get sick in the future, maybe, just maybe there will be a stem cell cure. In the future, a conversation with your doctor may go like this: "You have diabetes, let me call the stem cell bank in Florida and have a few shipped back and we'll get you taken care of." I hope the future is as bright as it looks.

Pinpointing Gold!!

vlcsnap-41269.pngWatch Pinpointing Gold Meeting -- from the News Director's Office

Most businesses have meetings. But when you have a daily meeting with two television anchors, you better believe there's going to be some getting off track.

Every day Walt and Amanda sit in the 5:30 Rundown meeting and listen to the producer tell them about the stories in the newscast. Other employees come too. Most of the time, it is very professional. UNTIL... the producer gets to the point of the newscast where it is time to talk about the "Pinpointing America" stories of the day.

"Pinpointing America" is a franchise in the 9 PM newscast each night. It consists of WILD stories from across the country. You know... bears going through someone's kitchen in Wisconsin... Car chase in California... surveillance video of an old lady getting mugged in Florida.... and then the old lady fighting back. (To conclude these stories are AWESOME)

And when the stories are REALLY REALLY REALLY awesome... we call it "Pinpointing Gold." And by "we" I mean myself, and Walt.  Each day Walt strives to get "Pinpointing GOLD" in his "Pinpointing America." Then he describes each story during the rundown meeting. Then I judge him and deem what is really "Pinpointing Gold."

Past "Pinpointing Gold" stories include:
1. A giant python stuck in a bathtub
2. Chocolate covered bacon
3. A prisoner so over-weight, he stored a gun in his fat
4. A woman who slow dances with her horse

You get the idea.

Our news director (as well as several other people in the meeting) is entertained by the entire ordeal, so he recorded the whole thing on his flip cam. I posted it... above...  check it out.

Broadnax Sentencing

Today was the first time I have worked on this story. I was first surprised because Mr. Broadnax looks a lot taller in person. After reading and hearing about all the crimes that he's standing trial for, I just didn't know what to expect at this trial. As I sat there watching the video of his jail house interviews being played, all I saw was a young man who was just so angry at the world. Many people saw his interviews and decided that he should die because he said he wanted to. Maybe I'm strange, but all I saw was a young kid who made a terrible, horrific decision. To me he was just speaking out of anger. Now, what his punishment should be, I won't even try and speculate.

Broadnax Sentencing

His mother was also in the courtroom..the only family member I saw around. I tell you, after covering these trials over the years I can say that many times only a mother will stand by her child..even when the rest of the world doesn't.
This young man has changed the lives of so many..his victims, his, his families, their families, etc...Its just a no win situation no matter what happens. So tonight the jury has the tough decision, life or death. I would not want to make the decision.

Traffic

I did a story a few years agot about how driving in heavy traffic is nearly as stressful as being a fighter pilot. That study may have been a bit far out, but getting around in traffic is really one of the toughest parts of reporting. Today, Matt and myself finished one story in Grapevine, then headed over to Flower Mound to get an interview for today's immunization story. I called ahead and told our interview subject that we'd be over in about 20 minutes. WOW, was I wrong. Make it almost an hour. We went eastbound on 114, of course you have to get in the right hand lanes to get to 121 which takes you to Lewisville-Flower Mound. We were going about 5 miles an hour FOREVER. It's really gotten to the point in DFW that setting up, interviewing, logging, writing and presenting stories live is the easy part of my gig. I know I'm not alone, I know fellow reporters here and at other stations feel the same pain. You hear the clock ticking all day long. I'm amazed that anything ever gets on the air with any quality. Here's something I don't like to hear: "Yea, we can talk to you, how about 5:00 in Plano? No wait. Make it McKinney." Look, I'm not complaining, I have a GREAT job. It's the traffic that bites, or maybe it's my inner fighter pilot coming out.

Why the deaths of 3 Infants may Remain a Mystery

It is a stark reality -- but investigators may never know what happened to 3 tiny infants, whose skeletal remains were found on a mobile home park in rural Tarrant County. 2 of the infants were found in a bag and box underneath the porch, the other was found in suitcase nearby, 18 months ago.

But, because there are only a few bones and not much tissue -- investigators may not be able to determine how or why the infants died -- and if their deaths were foul play. They may be able to determine if the 3 are related. The first was a baby boy. It seems like such an injustice, whether there is a crime involved or not, that these deaths may remain a mystery. But, evidence that even with advanced science and technology -- there is not an answer for everything.

Worse case scenario, Sorrell has promised his students that if the loses the next step he will "personally get on the phone and find places for our students to go to school."  Right now the college is preparing to file an injunction in Federal Court.  That should stay the SACS, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, appeal decision.

Give me a triple shot of that stuff

Say I can't finish my story in time to make it's slot in a newscast. It's called "Floating" a story. Other stories are bumped up while my story is floated down. It's only happened to me once in my career. The story may not have been pretty, but it didn't float. That's what Texas health officials did today when they extended the immunization deadline until October 1st. That's what I call floating a deadline. These are the newly required vaccinations:

Meningococcal

Tetanus/diptheria/pertussis (Tdap)

Varicella

If students don't have the required vaccinations by October 1st, they'll have another floating holiday from school, but the state probably won't float another deadline. The state could get away with it, but in TV, not so much.

Let's all put our hands together..and scrub

The CDC, the WHO and a who's who of health organizations all say the same thing: WASH YOUR HANDS.  The H1N1 forecast is scary. 90,000 thousand Americans could die. 300,000 so sick they have to be hospitalized. The Lewisville ISD is taking a unique approach to fighting the spread of H1N1 and the seasonal flu. A school nurse simply teaches kids how to wash their hands. She applies some glow-in-the dark pretend germs and shakes hands with everyone. The the lights go out and the kids hands glow in the dark. The nurse then teaches them how to sneeze and cough into their sleeve. It may sound simple, but teachers and school nurses are on the front lines. The nurse will teach the class three times while teachers make sure the kids wash their hands as many as ten times a day. It's happening at every LISD campus, from pre-k to the senior class. Let's all put our hands together, and scrub.

Talk about taking no chances, the school isn't even serving finger foods at catered events. Parts Is Parts

Southwest may be facing some stiff fines after the FAA discovered a contractor for the airline used unauthorized parts for repairs on some of its older jets. Today while talking to passengers at Love Field one asked me "so what's the big deal?"
As it turns out, it is a big deal. When an airline needs to buy replacement parts it just can't run down to the hardware store for a screw or bracket. The FAA tells me ever single part needs to come from a certified manufacturer. The parts are recorded and approved before ever being placed on jet.  It's a paperwork nightmare but an important procedure that cant be compromised. Imagine if a seemingly insignificant bolt were to fail at 20 thousand feet?

TABC Doles Out Punishment in Rainbow Raid

The TABC fired 3 employees involved in the controversial gay bar raid in Fort Worth. Agent Chris Aller, Agent Trainee Jason Chapman and Sergeant Terry Parsons all got the boot for their actions during the raid in June.

Most spectators agree that with the slew of policy violations, the agency probably had no choice but to terminate the agents -- but what will happen to Fort Worth police officers also involved in the raid? Perhaps they didn't call the shots like the TABC agents did, but they were there and it doesn't appear anyone tried to put the brakes on when people were being hauled out in zip ties. So, stay tuned to see what punishment those officers may face.

You have to feel the horrible loss suffered by a Grapevine woman, whose 61-year old mother was killed by a man on a cell phone. She now wants cell phone makers and providers to increase warnings on cell phones ... something like the black box warnings on the most dangerous drugs.

It is an interesting concept -- but some will argue that people already know it's dangerous and do it anyone. 2600 people die a year in crashes related to people distracted by cell phone use. People think they can "multi-task", but they can't.

Jennifer Smith thinks the answer is better warning labels, but her proposal is unpopular -- because it could pave the way to an all out ban on cell phone use while driving. Do you want to give up your phone in traffic?

Strength Beyond Belief

I remain blown away by the poise of Tressel Hawkins.  The former North Texas man was stuck on the top of a capsized boat for 8 days, surviving on a bag of chips, peanut butter crackers and  some gum.

He is uncomfortable with all the attention, but using the spotlight to make a request of everyone listening.
