Who doesn't love hot belly dancers?

I had the pleasure of joining legendary chef Stephan Pyles in the kitchen to cook up some of his creations for his new restaurant, 'Samar'.  Tonight I'll take you inside the restaurant and the grand opening where goegeous women sipped signature cocktails, food lovers munched on food from afar and belly dancers and hookah smokers added to the already exotic atmosphere.  A fun evening.... I could have stayed all night people watching!

Cheers,

McKinney Grades

The days of at least getting a 50 are over..lol. I had to laugh when I did this story. I mean it does sound ridiculous but the 50 minimum rule probably helped out a lot of a of students. The actually was passed in June...The Texas Education Agency gave school districts across the state a period to come in compliance.

McKinney Grades

I talked with a number of districts today...Richardson, Irving, Plano, etc., most were familiar with the new rule and admitted that they used to have or at least considered the rule before.
I do understand not wanting students to be discouraged. Each time I do education stories in Collin county I always find out that the majority of students there perform really well in school.

ROAD FUNDS SPEED AWAY

Federal funds are more like a promise, every few years Washington allocates dollars for states to build roads, bridges and other highway projects, but don't run out and cash the check. This week after congress failed to eliminate a provision in a six-year national highway funding bill it was forced to take back some of that money, exactly $8,708,000,000 nationwide. That's $8.7 billion less in federal dollars to spend on badly needed  infrastructure.

California was at the top of the list loosing $800 (m) followed by Texas with $740 (m). TXDOT says it will impact future projects but unlike some states we didn't run out and spend all that loot, only about  $100(m). Here's the breakdown by Metros in Texas.

UNOBLIGATED BALANCES TO BE RESCINDED IN TEXAS

Austin 5,207,206.00
Corpus Christi 1,696,967.00
Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington 23,934,831.00

El Paso 3,743,892.00
Houston 22,069,135.00

I know what I'll blog about. The Flu.

I think I'm on a roll. The last few days have been all about the flu. Take your pick, H1N1. Seasonal flu. Trust me, there is always a story there. Today, it was about production. The production of the H1N1 vaccine is to blame for a seasonal flu vaccine shortage. Yes, the swine flu is the bad guy again. Health officials are frustrated now because they are getting fewer and delayed doses of the seasonal flu vaccine, and to top it off, in Texas, H1N1 doses may not arrive until the end of October. There is plenty of finger pointing to go around and I don't know if that's constructive or not, but I do know there was a time when we could send a man to the moon and back. Now, we can't produce two vaccines at the same time.

Hello Mother Nature

Pick up the phone.  Are you home?

I thought I made my request for rain, lightning, thunder and ensuing puddles/mud very clear last night.  (See blog).

I had the storm gear ready and I wanted all of the above.  You did not deliver in the areas I spent the day Thursday.  Boo on you.

I'm sure it was a simple oversight and at some point you will honor my wishes.  Get on it, yes?

Gay Divorce

Once again this latest case has made gay marriage and divorce a hot button issue. I visited the Cathedral of Hope in Dallas today. I was surprised to learn that its the largest gay/lesbian church in the U.S.  Rev. Piazza says it been around for forty years. In that time he says he has performed thousands of marriages, both gay and straight. He of course feels very passionately about this latest gay divorce. He feels that this struggle is similar to the civil rights period.

Gay Divorce

I also interviewed the attorney representing the gay couple. He tells me the he was approached by a man named J.B. last year. J.B. wanted to dissolve his marriage of 12 years. The lawyer, Peter Schulte, would not give the names of either of the gentlemen, but he would tell me that they are both in the their forties. Schulte says this situation is all about divorce, not marriage. If all goes well, the couple should have a final divorce in two weeks. The state, of course, has the right to appeal the decision.

Will H1N1 Season Ever End?

That might make for a good story. It rolled into the U.S. in the spring and hasn't departed. The seasonal flu is just that, it comes in late fall, early winter, makes a bunch of people sick, and then leaves. So far, H1N1 is like the last person that doesn't want to leave the party. H1N1 has made for a busy week. Today, H1N1 and pregnancy. In a nutshell, it's risky. The doctor we interviewed said he would not hesitate to tell his pregnant wife, daughter, neighbor or friend to get vaccinated for the seasonal flu and H1N1. Let's hope the vaccine helps put an end to H1N1, or at least begins to show it the door.

Fatigue or Flu?

Amanda Mask.JPG
So I've been feeling awful all week.  It started Monday with chest pains during my morning run and severe fatigue for the next few days.

Everything came to a head Wednesday night.  I started getting chills and body aches.  Hmmmm Sound Familiar??  Then at at 6:45 it happened the fever!!  By the time I got home at 11pm my temperature was 101.  I was lucky though, when I woke up Thursday morning my fever has broken and I had no temperature at the doctors office.  Still, the nurses HAD to do a flu test because of my temperature.  It came back POSITIVE!!! AHHH

I asked my doctor many questions.  He tells me because my fever broke on its own and did not last very long I probably had a very mild case of Flu.

"But is it H1N1?" I asked.
"H1N1 is Type A Influenza.  It's what we're seeing right now," the doctor answered.

He doctor told me most of the Swine Flu cases his office has seen are teens and that their fever goes on and on for days.  I thought I was just tired!  Well perhaps the fatigue is what led to the illness.

You may be wondering what I'm wearing in the picture.  That's my fashionable version of the surgical mask.  Don't want to get anybody else sick.

GM Workers Log Extra Hours

2300 employees at the Arlington Assembly Plant worked a nine hour overtime shift today to ramp up production.

It lengthens their 10 hour a day, 4 day a week work week, but those I talked to today call it welcome additional income.

The overtime doesn't come without concerns, however.

To learn more, jump on over to out online news department.  You know how.

Have a good weekend, GM employees.

State Fair Classic

As I always I had a great time at the game this year. It actually started decades ago in a game between the Wiley Wildcats and the Langston Lions. The game now features Grambling and PV. I grew watching both bands. Gramblings band has always been near to my heart. One year I watched the entire band march on the field and everyone had on tux's.

Its looks like PV will be the winners of this years game...they led the entire game. I enjoy attending HBC games because there are some good memories there for me. My family always had a tradition of going to the Circle City Classic every year in Indianapolis. We haven't doing it in years, but those are still some good memories.

Packages For Troops

I got invited out to this troop packing party, it was really nice. There were so many letters and pictures from soldiers. The soldiers request coffee a lot according to the volunteers. They say they have to stay awake at night sometimes so the coffee comes in helpful. They also seem to love beef jerky. The soldier I spoke with says you can't just run down to Walmart over there. They have exchange stores but the selection is not so great.

Shameful, shocking attack on 66 year old

That Fort Worth man was delivering a pizza last night when he was attacked by what is believed to be 3 hispanic male juveniles.  He was beaten with an aluminum baseball bat.

A woman who says she saw the attack called 911.

The victim's family is devastated and in shock.  They say Fred Rein is a funny, kind and generous man who was doing this job because he loved people.  Residents in the neighborhood say he'd delivered there before and call him nice and friendly.

To hear more from Fred Rein's wife and grandson, go to our online news department.

The family is hoping someone who knows something will do the right thing and call police.

H1N1 Vaccine Arrives, In Dribbles

The long wait is over, for now. Dallas County Health and Human Services ordered 25,000 doses of H1N1 vaccine. Today, they got, are you sitting down? They got 700 doses. As per their plan, they'll use the doses on first responders, you know, doctors and nurses. It makes sense. If the people who will be giving the vaccine get sick, who gives the vaccine? More than 1,100 clinics and doctors are waiting for their doses. We interviewed one private sector doctor who is still waiting for his 2,500 doses. In the days ahead, you'll be hearing a lot of stories about people getting their H1N1 doses. Hopefully, between now and then, we won't hear of more H1N1 related deaths.

Reaching Out to The World's Most Hunted Terrorist?

You could have heard a pin drop in a federal courtroom in Dallas when an FBI agent began testifying about a teenage terror suspect trying to reach out to Osama Bin Laden. During a probable cause hearing, Special Agent, Tom Petrowski told a judge that Hosam Smadi videotaped a 7 minute message for OBL during a meeting a hotel. In the message, the agent says Smadi recited passages from the Qur'an and talked about his plans to attack a Dallas skyscraper.

It was really the new piece of evidence that came out of the hearing. Most of the other details have already been made public since the teen's arrest almost two weeks ago. Most experts agree that if the case against Smadi goes to trial, the videotape will be a very damaging piece of evidence.

H1N1 the culprit again, probably

Teachers at Weatherford's Mary Martin elementary are mourning the loss of 43 year old teachers assistant Angela Ward. She was hospitalized over the weekend after suffering from flu-like systems. According to school officials, she suffered two heart attacks, but as of this writing, H1N1 has not been confirmed as the cause of death. That being said, parents of students are concerned and surprised after learing the news while picking up their kids after school. I know we keep hearing the argument that H1N1 is just like the seasonal flu. I don't recall doing stories last year about teachers and students dying of the seasonal flu. I know I've done too many stories about people who have died of H1N1.

Bradie Tackling Breast Cancer Head On

Bradie James is famous on the field for delivering big hits. He's coming off a career season where he led the Cowboys in tackles, plus he led all NFL middle linebackers in sacks...

But its the hits he's taken off the field that's shaped his life...

"Well I actually lost my dad first," Bradie says. "My dad had a liver disease and then three months later, my mom passed."

Bradie lost his mother Etta to breast cancer during his freshman year of college.

"It just motivated me to become who I am today. Thats a part of life. Things happen, but its those who overcome that pretty much go on and be successful. I had a couple of choices. I could either cry about it, be sad, be depressed about it; which I was for a little bit; but I decided to be something for my family that I didn't have yet but just move forward with my life and thats what I did," says Bradie.

When Bradie made it to the Pros he decided to pay tribute to his mother by establishing Foundation 56.

Bradie says, "It's about not giving back but living your purpose and that's pretty much my mission. I don't care about making any banners about what I'm doing as long as I make an impact on someone's life; that's what we all should strive to do."

And the way Bradie's making a difference is through the foundation that bares his number.

"Going out there giving people pamphlets; getting a mammogram; making sure that they have rides once they've been diagnosed with cancer... I wanted to make an immediate impact; and thats what Foundation 56 does. We go out there on the street, and we try to help those people and not fall in between the cracks and that's what we've been able to do."

Design Flaw to blame in Cowboys Facility Collapse?

It is the report that many people have been waiting for from the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The non-regulatory arm of the Department of Commerce determined that the facility that toppled in May could not withstand proper wind strengths. The warranty guaranteed it would withstand 90 mph wind, but engineers say it collapsed under 55-65 mph gusts.

This is the news that attorneys for the injured, Rich Beam and Joe DeCamillis, expected. They have already filed lawsuits against Summit Structures and this will no doubt be more ammunition in court, as if it is needed. Beam was paralyzed and DeCamillis suffered a broken neck. We haven't heard much from Summit. An attorney today challenged the report findings, but wouldn't offer any more. I think many of the details will be revealed in court, if it gets that far.

Best Laid Plans

Did you miss my mug at 9pm tonight?  Me, too!  Blame in on Mother Nature.

We were in Wise County covering a plane that went down in a field this afternoon.

Minutes before air, I was plugged in, mic.'ed up, and made up with my thicker-than-molasses-foundation when a lightning show stole our stage.  It had just become potentially unsafe for us to do a live shot.  Lightning and live truck mast don't always mix.

We did get our news piece on the air and we did get home safely.  TV ain't always (if ever) glamorous!

We'll give it another try tomorrow.

Be safe out there.

New Bridge

I had the chance to talk with a few residents. The major arguments against the bridge were the price and eminent domain. The view is spectacular out at the lake with some very impressive wild life. Many of the residents moved out there to escape the loudness of the city, I can understand why they are upset.

New Bridge

I don't think I've ever seen a project like this move forward without significant resistance. The people at the engineering office seemed to be very used to this type of thing. To a certain extent I think many residence simply fall on deaf ears. You will always have someone who does not want things to change. Many of the laws are on the side of the government...if they really need the land, they will get it.

Vaccinating the people who will vaccinate

John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth became possibly the first hospital in north Texas to get a shipment of H1N1 vaccine and start administering doses to it's doctors and nurses who are on the front lines. The idea is to make sure they're healthy, so that if we get sick, someone will be there to help us. Good idea. There has been lots of talk about weather or not the vaccine is safe or not. The nurse I interviewed today did not bat an eye about getting the nasal mist vaccine. In fact, she couldn't wait for it to arrive. Her critical care waiting area has been full with people sick with the H1N1 virus. She doesn't want to be like them, and if the vaccine works, she won't. JPS received 200 doses. It needs 2,000.

Airport Surveillance

Does it surprise you that some U-S airports don't have surveillance systems? Grapevine Mills Mall has dozens of cameras that's are monitored by security staff 24-7, so why not our airports? Well this week the Transportation Security Administration announced it would be spending millions to do just that.
DFW and Love Field will get a combined 10 million for closed-circuit television cameras and recording devices. While both airports already had some surveillance the additional equipment will be a major step up.
DFW says it's already purchased most of it's new equipment while Dallas Love is still waiting for it's new upgrades.

Plano School Boundaries

What a hot button issue. I can understand parents being upset about this. I think its natural to only want the best for your child's education. Personally when I grew up I lived closer to one high school, but the district sent us to another one. My parents never questioned it...it was weird, but they didn't. I guess sometimes I think parents get a little too excited about things like these. I mean, if you care that much why don't you just put your kid in private school.

So, as I'm listening to all these parents I was thinking to myself....Plano usually has the some of the highest gpa's in the state. Its a fact. I think some of these parents need to look at districts that really have under performing schools. They have a lot to be thankful for in Plano. They are all good clean high schools. I have not heard about any shootings at any of the campuses. Sometimes we all just need a bit of reality.

Promises, promises

But this is a good one. The average waiting time in an emergency room these days is about 4 hours. If you're not sick, you will be by the time you leave. But Texas Health Plano has launched a new program called The 30 Minute Promise. The promise starts from the time you check in, until the time you see a doctor. Your actual time spent in the hospital may be longer, but you will get to see a doctor within 30 minutes. If that doesn't happen, you get a gift card that's good for a lunch. Hospital officials say they've only had to dole out a couple of gift cards. Something tells me the people who didn't receive a gift card, feel like the big winners.

Catching up...

It's been a busy week.  And though I shouldn't make excuses, I am.

I just now finished watching Tuesday's episodes of 90210 and Melrose Place.  My eyes are a little red and blurry, but it was worth it.  Pretty good episodes, I'd say, but Ella can't end up in the pokie.  She's far too much fun to wear only prison stripes.

I arrived late to my date with the dvr because SOMEBODY got me hooked on the Nebraska/Mizzou game.  I'm not naming names, (my boss), and I will admit it was a fun second half.

Hmmm.  Maybe SOMEBODY will be so happy with his "W", he'll let me expense tomorrow morning's quadruple espresso and Visine.

Just a thought.

Good night/Good morning.

Train Derailment

It was my first time traveling to Cleburne today...it was lot farther than I had thought it would be. My first view of the accident was from a bridge near downtown. The view was quite spectacular. Train derailments are always so amazing to me because tons of metal is left twisted and bent as if it were just a child's toy. In this case its a good thing that no one got hurt. Now comes clean up...that will take at least 24 hours.

Train Derailment

I just got an update from Charlie Hodges, he handles PR for the city of Cleburne. He says according to information given by the city manager initial indications are track problems are a cause for derailment. The only responsibility the city has in this accident is to make sure the appropriate streets are shutdown. Burlington-Northern Santa Fe is based in Fort Worth. The train was actually traveling from Wyoming to Houston carrying 4500 tons of coal. No injuries and the coal can still be used. According to the city and the railroad company there is no health risk for nearby residents.

Crush Videos get the High Court's Attention

This may be the most disturbing thing I have seen. They are called "crush videos" depicting acts of animal cruelty. Small animals are crushed beneath a stiletto heel. This is usually as part of sexual fetish by the watcher.

The high court must decide if these videos are protected by the 1st Amendment as free speech. Being a journalist, free speech is something I hold dear. How can anyone support a crime being commited, recorded and then sold? Opponents of the videos ask what is next, the slaughter of human beings or maybe the rape of children?

The court didn't telegraph what it will decide, but let us hope for the sake of decency the justices actually watch one of these videos and make what many believe is the humane decision.

A week of swine

Better known as H1N1 these days. I think I did three H1N1 stories this week. I know some people out there consider it hype, but the numbers I hear are pretty serious, especially since the the vaccine for the general public still hasn't been delivered. I leave you this weekend with the following information. 25% of people hospitalized with H1N1 end up in ICU. 7% of those end up dead. Kids are especially impacted by H1N1. Since April, 76 kids have died from H1N1, 16 in the past week. Compare those numbers to the seasonal flu, which kills between 46 and 88 kids a year. Until as many people who want to be vaccinated, get vaccinated, I don't think H1N1 is hype. We may be sick of it, but it's not hype. Even if it is hype, at least it's not Dancing With the Stars or American Idol hype.

Don't Ask, Don't Tell

There were hundreds of runners at the Lifewalk today. I talked with a few participants and most seemed to think that Obama had made empty promises to get their votes. Many of the runners seemed to be really concerned with gay marriage. Many said it was the most important issue facing the gay community. With that said, I couldn't help but remember that Obama has really been quite frank about his stance on the issue. He has gone on the record saying he defines marriage as a woman and man. The president has said he would consider civil unions for same sex marriages.

Ready or not

A new study by the Irving based American College of Emergency Physicians may be a bitter pill to swallow. The organization surveyed more than 1,000 ER doctors and found that almost 90% of them were worried about their department's ability to take care of the crush of patients with flu-like symptoms. They also felt the federal government didn't do a very good job of helping them out either. Imagine that. I've done stories about tents being pitched at hospitals to take care of the overflow. Some hospitals triage patients with flu-like symptoms away from healthy ones, which sounds like a good idea. The doctor we interviewed didn't want the name of the hospital where she works revealed. I understand, the study isn't about any one hospital, but rather the state of emergency care in this country. She says that once the flu epidemic is over, emergency care needs a good shot in the arm. Want a second opinion? Ask the other 999 doctors who took part in the study.

Death Sentence Questioned: Panel Member Speaks

No doubt you have heard there is a very public debate about whether the state executed an innocent man five years ago. Cameron Todd Willingham was sent to his death for setting a house fire in Corsicana that killed his three young daughters.

Since his execution, critics have claimed that investigators used "junk science" to convict him. A panel is now looking into the matter and one of the newest appointees says he takes the responsibility very seriously. Fort Worth attorney, Lance Evans is on the panel. Imagine being on the commission that must decide if an innocent man was strapped to a guerney and given a lethal cocktail of drugs.

We will have to wait a few months to see what the commission decides. If they rule it wasn't an arson fire, open the flood gates because there will be far-reaching ramifications.

Did you see them?  Do you have pictures?  Want to weigh in on their performance?

I was at Cowboys Stadium as well, but didn't get to see nearly enough of the the show.

Let me know what you thought.  Muse fans, you're welcome, too.

You too? I didn't see U2 either.

I could tell you all about the story I did today about more doctors seeing hip injuries in young athletes. I like the story, it turned out nice. You can see it on our home page. But I'd like to talk about the U2 concert last night at the new Cowboy stadium. I wasn't there, and I'm betting you weren't either. But I feel like I don't feel like the day was a total loss. Here is why. I get home after work, get organized, grab my nightly bowl of cerial and cozy up to a TV show that I doesn't make me think, and to my surprise, there on VH1 (which I never watch) is the U2 concert film Rattle and Hum. I've never seen it, so I watched the whole thing, and then, there was some show on about how the Joshua Tree album was made. To make a long story short, I don't feel robbed because I didn't get to see last night's concert in Arlington. I saw them last time they were here at Reunion. I choose to look on the bright side, I got to see a U2 concert last night, and have my nightly bowl of cerial.

Big Break: DNA May Solve 10-year old Rape Case

Somewhere in North Texas a 23-year old rape survivor is rejoicing, police say after hearing her alleged attacker is behind bars. The woman was a 13-year old girl on her way to school when a man grabbed her and did unspeakable things. It has taken all these years to crack the case after leads went no where and then dried up.

It was DNA technology that gave police the break they have been waiting for. A sample from the crime scene matched a sample in a national data base, belonging to 53-year old Dennis Griffith. People in the tiny town of Morgan, where Griffith lives, can't believe the newspaper deliveryman might be the rapist. They say he doesn't fit the type.

Police however are confident they have the right guy. They think the DNA doesn't lie.

I take it all back!

Remember when I begged for rain recently?  Well, after visiting some businesses today, I change my mind.  They've had more than enough; their bottom lines are being seriously dampened by all our wet weather.

It's been weeks of pain for them, but I hear...yes, of course from Bob Goosmann...that we might be getting a reprieve.

Check us both out online.  And stay dry.

SWAT Teams

This was the second time I've covered a SWAT event here. This one was different than the last. This one was all about handling an emergency situation. This time they used a mock bank robbery. You could see snipers all around the stadium with guns and it was very realistic. The event is funded by Homeland Security. The main goal of this event was to teach agencies how to work closely with each other.

SWAT Teams

Its important for agencies to learn to work together because if there's an event big enough they would all be called. Homeland Security hold these practice sessions because there have mistakes in the past. The SWAT members carried weapons but they were not loaded. Each city brought their command centers also. Frisco had the most elaborate one which costs 1.5 million dollars.

So rare, I've never heard of it

Wegener's Granulomatosis. I'm glad I'm spelling it and not trying to pronounce it again. It's a disease that affects 1 in 30,000 people. Odds are, you and I will never have to deal with it. The disease inflames many tissues in the body, including blood vessels, which is what happened to 26 year old Jason Stricklin. He had a hard time shaking a sore throat and painful ear infection. It became so bad he went to the doctor, they ran a few tests and discovered he had WG. As you might imagine, it's not the first thing doctors look for. 1 in 30,000 means doctors look at many other things before they figure out it's WG. It's way down the list. Nobody comes in with an ear infection and is immediately diagnosed with WG. Anyway, Jason is doing well now, but he spent almost two months in and out of the hospital, near death. Doctors say he's very lucky to be alive. Odds are, he feels the same way.

On The Edge

Patricia and Terry Palmer are literally living on the edge. The recent rains soaked the couples back yard. Terry noticed his wooden deck had shifted in the soft soil, but when he looked over his iron railing he saw something far worse. His entire back yard slid down the hillside taking with it his retention wall, fence and trees. The scary part is the piers that hold up the homes foundation are partially exposed. Now the bad news, his insurance doesn't cover this kind of damage. The big question now is will they get assistance from the city. The city signed off on the homes construction. Did it know something like this might happen? The Palmer's are not alone, two other homes also have damage.
What do you think? Should they be left to deal with the damage or does the city have some responsibility?

Fire Ants and Rain

I managed to get through this story today with no ant bites..lol. At one point my tripod was swarming with ants...the pest control guy politely brushed them off..and I let him..lol. I don't do bug bites especially Fire ants. Those are some pretty painful bites. The entomologist I spoke with said some people are allergic to the venom and it one bite can mean death.

Fire Ants and Rain

Fire ant bites are said to among the most painful for ants. According to the entomologist you usually get a red itchy bump with a white puss filled sack. Is it just me, I don't remember getting the white puss filled sack, but according to her, thats what you can expect.
I had no idea that the colonies can run so far underground (7feet). That is quite amazing. There is a whole other world under our feet.

Real men can have breast cancer

And I met one today. His name is Stephen Wren. What a great guy, they type of guy who does the right thing. In July, he was diagnosed with breast cancer. 1 in 1,000 people diagnosed with breast cancer are men. It was the last disease he thought he would ever have to worry about. He had a mastectomy and is currently undergoing chemotherapy. Let's be honest, guys like to suck it up and not talk about stuff, but Stephen is talking. He's trying to make a point that men can also have breast cancer. He's living proof. This weekend, along with thousands of women, he'll attend the annual Komen Race For The Cure in Dallas. If you look for him, he'll be easy to find. He'll be the guy. Let me rephrase that. He's the man.

Texas - OU = Green

Yes, green!  As in cash, dollars, mula.  Even in this down economy, fans are digging deep to cheer on the Sooners or Longhorns. (I'm rooting for my Horns!) The swanky W hotel is sold out for this weekend and the traffic on 35 is nearing bumper to bumper. The State Fair is busier at this hour!! I know the Texas Young Alumni have a number of events scheduled for today and tomorrow at area pubs.  I imagine the same for OU alumni.

How do you feel about Texas-OU events in Big D? Do you enjoy the energy? Abhor the party and the traffic that it brings?  I think its great for region, our economy and our traditions in Texas!!
With technology taking over the world it's nice to have something traditional to hold on to.

Let me know what you think!!

Texas-OU parking disaster ... resolved?

The city of Dallas is trying to prevent the towing nightmare that some Texas-OU fans endured last year. Dozen of visitors paid illegitimate parking attendants who had conspired with a towing company to then tow the vehicles. Talk about a double whammy! Some fans paid more than $200 between the towing and parking fees -- not to mention hours of frustration.

This year, the city has issued 250 permits for legitimate parking lot attendants. Those planning to tow violators' cars must also post towing signs. Learn more about how to avoid getting duped into a parking scheme on The 33 News tonight at 5:30 and 9 p.m.

H1N1 Recovery

Not all cases of the H1N1 flu end in a bad way. My story today was about 15 year old Jessica Samples. She is almost ready to dismissed from the hospital. I listened carefully as she described the symptoms she had. Doctors initially told her that she just had the regular flu and she didn't know any difference. That tells me that there are probably a lot of people out there that think they have seasonal flu, but actually have Swine flu. Scary stuff.

H1N1 Recovery

So, I actually took a seasonal flu shot about two weeks ago. It was the first time I had ever had one and I didn't get sick. My doctor also used the occasion to give me a booster shot. I basically reasoned that I did not want to get the flu twice this year, meaning seasonal and swine flu. Getting seasonal once is too much for me, I couldn't imagine getting sick twice. My doctor gave the inhaler and it was painless. I'll let you know how this flu season goes for me.

Excessive Force or Proper Police Work?

Activists in Fort Worth are angry after the Fort Worth Police Chief, Jeffrey Halstead, declined to give the officer involved in the taser death of a young man any punishment. 24-year old Michael Jacobs died in his yard last April after being tased by Officer Stephanie Phillips.

Phillips for now, remains on the job and won't face disciplinary action. Jacobs' family believes that because the death was ruled a homicide, Phillips should have been reprimanded in some way.

Halstead says he can't say much about why he kept the officer on the job because of potential legal action. He asked the DOJ to look into the matter. I think we will see a lot more to come on this issue. Police have a very tough job, but are tasers being used in too cavalier of manner? That is my question. What do you think?

Red River Rivalry Preview

Tomorrow is the 104th installment of The Red River Rivalry between #3 Texas and #20 Oklahoma. Now this Big 12 Showdown has a reputation of being a high scoring shoot-out. Case and point... last year's game ended in an entertaining 45 - 35 Longhorn victory, but this year... defense may dominate the headlines.

I know it doesn't sound as sexy as a high octane offensive free for all... but the fact of the matter is... both U.T. and O.U. feature two of the best defenses in the nation. Texas ranks 1st in the country in rushing defense while Oklahoma ranks third. The Sooners can also hang their hats on the fact that they're also 3rd in the nation in total sacks.

With that being said, I predict that Texas wins 47 to 38. Ha! I feel that when two schools, who really can't stand each other (excluding Colt McCoy's and Sam Bradford's friendship) you can throw statistics and records, out the window. I do expect this one to live up to the hype. Be sure to catch the highlights and post game comments on The 33 News @ Nine.

Protect your brain, it's the smart thing to do

Football is a high impact sport and doctors say many concussions caused by the hits are often under reported. Under reported because it can be hard to tell if a player has a concussion or not, even xrays and cat scans can't detect them. Now, 75 north Texas schools are taking part in a program called 'Impact.' Athletes take a baseline cognitive test that can later be used in the event of a concussion. So far, 14,000 athletes have had the test, just in case. One of them is a great kid named Collin. He got whacked pretty good and didn't even know he had a concussion. He didn't feel good, but never connected the dots until he went to see a specialist. He hasn't played in nearly a month. He must pass all five parts of the Impact test, he's still trying to pass the one which requires him to remember words. When he can do that, doctors will release him to play. When it comes to your brains, that's using your head.

Is Bevo Sedated?

yoohoo.JPGI got a nasty email from a University of Texas graduate. I didn't get the rage, but I got the point. She said she was OFFENDED! Yes, in all caps OFFENDED, because during the newscast I mentioned that BEVO looked heavily sedated. I wanted to write her back and say that's what an Aggie told me and she should get over it. But, I would never do that. Then later in the email she hit me with another all caps blast of GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT! "BEVO is NEVER sedated!" OK, OK, OK, I hear you. Then she challenged me to research it and find the truth. So, Jenny Prazak, I did hunt for the truth at the great State Fair of Texas. As I walked to the livestock barns a few people said, "Oh Yeah, BEVO is sedated so he doesn't rush the fans and hurt someone." Yeah, I've heard that for years Jenny and that's what got me in trouble with you on the air so I dismissed that until I could talk with an expert. When I got to the livestock barns I talked with Trigg Moore who has raised Longhorns for 18 years, Grand Champions and Reserve Grand Champions. Surely, he would know and he did. And I quote, "HE IS NOT SEDATED," Trigg said in all caps to me."These things are so docile, gentle by nature. My daughter started showing them when she was three years old." OOOHHH, Gored by the TRUTH! JENNY PRAZAK YOU WIN. I WAS WAY WRONG AND I APOLOGIZE. I will forever correct my Longhorn friends who are also graduates who didn't know the truth. Hook 'em Horns Jenny.

Dart Overload

I had never been to a Texas/OU game before and wow was I in for a surprise. There were just so many people. I was not ready for the crowds that were on hand. It was great fun, but I can see very easily how DART officials could have underestimated their system. I think that many in the crowds were just really worked up and excited about the game. By the time they finally made it to the stadium I think they were okay despite some complaints.

I see now why the Texas/OU weekend is has the largest revenue of the fair. The fans spend some serious money. In previous years the game day has grossed about 2.8 million dollars alone. Fair coordinators are hoping to make at least that or more in food and ride tickets.

Deflated

  Place questions in the box.

Say it's not true. Colorado authorities say last week's balloon drama was a hoax concocted by the Heene family. Apparently they thought it would help launch their reality TV show.
I really wanted to believe them, but lets face it this thing smelled bad from the beginning. On Saturday he told reporters to put their questions in a box so he could address each one.  As a rule most good reporters don't give questions in advance of an interview since it allows a subject to formulate their answers in advance. It's now clear why Mr. Heene was hoping to avoid a question he might not have been able to answer.
And what about the media? Larimer County Sheriff Jim Alderden says investigators are examining the possibility of other conspirators, such as media outlets. This just gets better by the hour, stay tuned.

Seeing Red after New Green Line

DART did a great job promoting the new Green Line from Victory Park to Fair Park.  But, they could not deliver for Texas-OU weekend.  The trip from Victory Park to Fair Park on gameday was sloooooow.  But, it was the trip back after the game that was a NIGHTMARE.  We waited about two hours or more in line just to get into the train to take us back to Victory. Yikes.  It was terrible.  They need more trains and less stops, especially for big weekends like Texas-OU.  But, I have to say it was nice to have the option to take the Green Line and use mass transit in Dallas.  It would be great to see the rail lines get bigger and more efficient.  The trains were nice and clean and for the most part the people handled the delays well.  Hopefully,Texas-OU next year won't be Texas-OOOOHHH NO on the Green Line.

Sleep ....my one desire.

I have a confession to make.

I need 6 hours sleep!  I can barely function on less than 6 hours.  Last night I got 10 hours sleep!   That is better than chocolate ice cream.   I blame my torrid love affair with sleep on parenthood.

Before I had my first child, one person warned me that I would never sleep again.  How true they were.  Parents, you know what I'm talking about.   I got very little sleep, disjointed sleep, interrupted sleep for the first year of my daughters life.  Then my son came along and it was another year of "no"sleep.

But like anything, your body adjusts.  You get use to it.  You HAVE to get use to it or you will not survive.   Plus I'm a better parent to my children if I'm well rested.

Luckily my daughter and son now sleep through the night, but they still wake up at the crack of dawn-- 6:30 a.m.  So when we can, my husband and I go to bed EARLY.  I'm talking 8 p.m. sometimes 7:30 p.m. on Sundays.

sleeping baby.jpg

That is how exhausted we feel, and it is the only way I can catch up on my beauty sleep.  Benjamin Franklin said it best "Early to bed.  Early to rise."

Moms, Dads tell me what you do to get more sleep.  If you don't have kids how important is sleep to you?

Nighty night..

DC Sniper Execution Could Help Solve Denton Murder?

A family in Denton has waited for years for the answers about who killed their son in 2002. 37-year old Billy Gene Dillon was shot by a sniper while cutting trees along a rural street. He was shot in the head and died instantly.

Dillon's family believes DC snipers, John Muhammad and Lee Malvo may be behind the shooting. Malvo reportedly confessed to the killings a few years ago, but because of a lack of forensic evidence no one was ever charged in Dillon's murder.

Now, with Muhammad's execution looming, the family hopes he may be willing to tell what he knows. The sniper is set to die next month. Friends hope for a confession, but it may be a long shot. Denton County Sheriff's investigators have requested an interview with Muhammad, but every time he has turned them down. His attorney still hopes to spare his life with a last minute plea for clemency.

As seen on TV

larhall.JPGWhen you watch TV there is a whole group of people who work on the newscast.. who you never see.

I am a TV producer. That means I sit in a control room and write stories for the newscast. And tell people ON TV what to do.

Producers are NOT normally on TV. But we wanted to show viewers what it is like in the newsroom. So every day at 5:30... I wind up on TV to tell you.... at home... what it is like.

So it seems like it would be easy, but it is NOT easy. I have learned the following things:

1. If you get popped up on TV and you weren't ready it is very distracting. And you will probably mess up and stumble all over yourself

2. You have to wear A LOT of make up or you will look pale on camera

3. Walt is funny in real life, but on TV he may ask you a question you don't know the answer to and then you have to quickly think of something smart to say... because you are on TV.

4. If you don't stand a certain way, you will definitely look fat.

5. Amanda is really good at using her hands to convey messages. I, on the other hand use my hands while talking way too much, and will probably hit someone one of these days.

Here's a link to one of my "appearances":

More Legal Trouble for Fort Worth over the use of Tasers

Fort Worth Police are really getting hammered over the use of tasers by cops. An attorney is preparing a new lawsuit against the department after an incident last year that was caught on tape.

It is disturbing to watch. A 29-year old man is screaming in pain while cops tase him up to 8 times. He's now suing, claiming excessive force. The family of Michael Jacobs, who died after being hit with a taser is also suing.

This will be a tough legal road to hoe, according to experts. Attorneys have to prove there is some kind of pattern of negligence in the department to hold police and individual officers, accountable. But, with the cases of bad taser use mounting there may be growing ammunition, so to speak, to prove their points in court.

Check out the home video of the taser atttack in my story at the33tv.com.

Busy Busy Busy

hard at work.jpeg

That's me hard at work in Denton.  My photographer and I headed up I-35 to Borman Elementary School.  We interviewed 1st grade teacher Ashley Moser and his principal Ruben Molinar.  It's for my "Class Act" Teacher of the Week segment.

What a busy day it was.  From getting the kids out the door to school at 7:45 a.m. to squeezing in a quick workout , then off to an appointment in Dallas and on to work and out the door to Denton.  It was go go go today, but I would not have it any other way.

I love being busy.  I enjoy having a purpose to my day.  I'm a happier person if I'm occupied.

The book "CrazyBusy: Overstretched, Overbooked and About to Snap" by author Edward M. Hallowell, addresses how we can take control of life's hectic pace. He says we're too busy to notice we're busy because:

A) It's easy with cell phones and BlackBerrys to stay in touch.

B) Being busy is kind of a high. (Guilty)

c) We're afraid we'll be left out if we slow down.

I'm just not a big fan of lazy.  At least not during the workweek.  After all days off are made for lounging.

How do you feel about being busy?  Are you overwhelmed?  Or addicted to the crackberry?  Tell me.

The city says it will transition to the use of lethal injection in most cases by year's end.

Red River Rivalry for the Royal Throne

The Red River Rivalry usually plays out on the field of the Cotton Bowl.  But, there was one battle royal over the bathroom the night before.  We all know the drinks are flowing for Texas-OU weekend and the lines for the bathroom can be overflowing.  Everyone is suppose to anxiously wait their turn.  Right? But, apparently, one Longhorn fan felt that her bladder was a little more important than the people waiting in the looooong line.  So, dressed in Longhorn Burnt Orange, she walked up to the front of the line, passing several Sooners in red.  One woman, a Sooner, didn't appreciate that so she let her have it. That was pass interference all the way. Nasty words led to hair pulling and pushing.  The battle was on and in this day and age so were the cell phones.  One man with a cell phone caught the whole thing with his cell phone video camera.  By the looks of it, the Longhorns won this one.  We've got a link to this Red River Rivalry for the Royal Throne on our website.  Can't we all just get along?

Does more housework mean more sex???

house2.jpg

Today, instead of working out, I spent my morning doing chores.  That's the pile of clothes I folded; most of it my children's.  Yesterday, I swept the kitchen.  We have a pretty big house, so the housework is inevitable and with two children it gets messy pretty quick.

Here's the interesting part - because my household chores won't hold your attention--a new study shows that for husbands and wives, the more housework you do, the more likely to have sex with your spouse.  Really??

The study, published in the Journal of Family Issues, says research show high achievers -go getter couples--make sex and housework a priority.  Also, doing housework promotes intimacy and reflects a deep bond between the couple.

The study defined housework as nine chores: cleaning, preparing meals, washing dishes, washing and ironing clothes, driving family members around, shopping, yard work, maintaining cars and paying bills.

My better half makes a big effort to keep the house clean.  Maybe it's because my mother in-law is a neat freak;-) All I can say is thank you honey.  If it wasn't for you the dishes would never get done.

What a story this one was. Jim Grimes actually did this story the first time around. The neighborhood is so nice but the house is really on the edge of a cliff. I felt to bad for the family, they have invested so much. When we first arrived Patricia was cooking some kind if beef stew ( it smelled fabulous!!!) and there home looked so happy until we stepped into the backyard. The family says they built it from the ground up.

Home Sinking

Since they had built from the ground up I wondered if they new what was causing it to sink now. They really have no idea...they had even heard that a sewer might be to blame. At the end of the day it will take at least 50,000 to fix..problem is who will pay. Insurance will not cover it and the city of Dallas has said they don't have money allotted for such repairs. We asked if the family feared for their safety and they said yes.

Cancer Education

We could be poised for a shift in guidelines for some cancer screenings.  It follows just released research in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

We spoke with local doctors today about their reactions to the findings.  Authorities tonight are stressing the importance of education, communication and personalized treatment that weigh the potential benefits and risks.

My Luggage Is Where?

Has an airline ever misplaced your bag or lost it all together? You know first hand just how upsetting it can be. Seldom do the airlines make it easy. Usually it takes a half dozen phone calls to get any action and is it worth the hassle?
Continental, Hawaiian and Spirit Airlines are among the U.S. Carriers being looked at by Department of Transportation. U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said  "travelers should not have to pay for toiletries or other necessities while they wait for baggage misplaced by airlines."
The above mentioned airlines had made up policies forcing passengers to wait a full 24 hours before getting reimbursement.  Spirit was fined several hundred thousand dollars for its mistake and others might have to do the same.

The Word of the Day

In the control room there are several people working very hard to get the newscast on air. We sit in the control room, during the live show.

99.9% of the time it is VERY VERY serious in this control room. But during sports-- we all like to play a game.

It is called: get Dave Crome to say a funny word on the air.

crome1.jpgRight before sports, one of us asks him to insert an entertaining phrase into his sports show. It can be anything from ... "ice cream cone".... to "picket fence" to "fly a kite." He then has to figure out how to ad-lib it into one of his scripts.

Dave Crome: "Huge play for the Mavs! Dirk was unstoppable! Like a chubby kid eating ice cream cone on a Texas August day!"

Dave Crome: "Wade Phillips is trying to build a stronger defense...but it's turning out to be more like a picket fence... you can step right over it."

Dave Crome: "Romo looking a little winded after the 3rd sack... enough to fly a kite."

So yes -- listen closely. Next time you hear something that seems a little weird on air during sports.... it probably is just part of Dave Crome's "Word of the Day"

New adventures!

I just finished logging my tape (that's when we write all our soundbites to help form the script for our story) from our Worldfest shoot.  I am always up for a new adventure, even at the cost of looking foolish!  Tonight you'll see what I mean.  I tried out several different activities, from dressing up in traditional Turkish costume, to cooking Bulgarian dishes, and yes, even trying my hand at one of the oldest forms of martial arts.  Let's just say it wasn't pretty!  Tune in tonight to see how I did with the experts and what other fun activities and events will be going on this weekend at Worldfest.

Cheers,

Up All Night at Cool River Cafe

Cool River Cafe is a great place to go for a first date. They have a restaurant for the perfect romantic dinner for two while at the same time providing entertainment that would help with any awkward silence.
Entertainment being number one, a bar.  The bar is fully stocked so that your date is not limited to a specific type of drink and can feel free to get whatever they want. Second, there is a billiard room. Playing pool or any type of game is a great way to do something competitive so that you can show off your wit and charm. Finally, they have a band every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Therefore, loud music can overpower the conversation if you're not really into the person you're on the date with, on the contrary it can give you a great excuse to get close to the person by asking them to dance.

Asleep At The Wheel

Trucks drivers are like most professionals, they take pride in their job. I spent the day talking with truckers about the NTSB's recommendations to screen for a common sleep disorder, sleep apnea. Most drivers agreed it's not a bad idea. The problem is how does the government plan on implementing those tests.
Drivers are required to get biannual physicals but if they don't know they have a sleep disorder they might not discuss it with the doctor. Trucker Marshall Grady told me, "I don't think its a good thing but I guess the only way you'll know you have a problem is to get tested for it."  The fear is obvious, a positive diagnosis could sideline their career. NTSB suggests allowing drivers to retain their licence if they allow to be treated for the disorder.

Shot Shortage

The good news is that people are taking the flu serious this year. Usually each North Texas county orders enough seasonal flu vaccine to last through the end of the year. Well, this year the vaccines have already been used up. Each health department offers free shots to some customers, now they will need to purchase them from pharmacies or private doctors.

Shot Shortage

Seasonal flu shots are usually offered in both a nasal form and an injectable version. I am told the shot is for patients that may not have underlying health problems. The nasal mist can be used for other people with no problems. For instance, this year I got the nasal mist. I have no health problems like asthma, etc. I didn't get sick as I thought I would have either.

Today I learned how to merge

laneclosed.jpgFor the last couple of weeks, I've been hitting a traffic jam at State Highway 114 and Wingren in Irving.  Traffic merges from two lanes to one because of construction, and the merge creates the backup.

Granted, I go to work after rush hour, so I don't get the worst of any backups.

Still, sitting in the backup for a few minutes reminded me of something I read in Traffic:  Why We Drive the Way We Do (And What it Says About Us) by Tom Vanderbilt.
traffic book logo.jpg
It's a great read for anyone who spends time in traffic, but I specifically remembered the Prologue, "Why I Became a Late Merger (and Why You Should Too).

For most of my life, when I've approached a lane closure, I've moved into the proper lane as soon as possible, before traffic started backing up.  My thought was, if everyone did what I did, no one would have to stop and we'd all move through the merge more quickly.  Not being the type to throw a one-digit salute, I would look at those late mergers annoyingly, thinking they were slowing everyone down.

Vanderbilt says I'm wrong, for two reasons.

   (1) Merging late makes more efficient use of the road by using the lane that's closing as long as possible.  (Whatever)

   (2) If everyone waits to merge at the last minute, it reduces the number of merge points.  The research says every merge point
increase the risk of a crash.  And every time a driver changes lanes, everyone behind him or her in the new lane has to slow down.

So today I tried it.

I stayed in my lane all the way to the forced merge point (along with many other drivers).  I felt like a first-grader trying to cut in line in the cafeteria.  I thought drivers might even make it hard for me to merge.

merginglanes1.jpgBut they weren't.  Drivers in the other lane were letting us in, one at a time.  No one-digit salutes.  I gave a friendly wave to the driver who let me in.  And we all got through a little faster.

Louder Calls For Changes in Public Intoxication

It seems the debate over public intoxication just will not go away and for good reason. Even police admit it is a subjective charge. An officer must think that a person is drunk and poses a danger to himself/herself or others. The officer normally uses a kind of checklist to make the determination. You know the bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, etc.

The problem is: many of the people who are being arrested say they haven't had anything or at least very little to drink. People who aren't drunk are being busted and sent to the drunk tank, which can not be a pleasant experience. The Class C misdemeanor charge can also be expensive and embarassing.

Dallas Police say they are going to change the way they do business. The department is giving officers a little more room to expand the narrative on the arrest report. Critics however want more. Some want to see field sobriety tests or even breathlizers used on PI suspects. It may be a long shot, but at least a department is considering it. Be sure to check out my story at the33tv.com. You will see an interview with a 22-year old who was maced and arrested all because he went out to dinner with friends.

Woodall Rodgers Shutdown

I've only been a Dallas for one year now and I had no idea this project was in the works. I use the freeway several times and week and honestly I can't quite picture downtown without it. But, when I saw the animation of what it will look like, I was impressed. It really does remind me of Central park or something. I think it will create quite a nice feel for the area. Downtown Dallas is not as congested as other major cities and I like that about it.

Woodall Rodgers Shutdown

Of course, no major project will move forward without some opposition. Some downtown residents are not crazy about the change. I'm sure they will like the park when its completed but its getting there that is painful. Residents complained about construction sounds at night. Can you imagine...you pay a good chunk of change to live in a high rise over looking the city and at night your hearing crashing metal and cement. I'd be upset too. At least the weekend construction projects will end after next weekend, hopefully.

Yes, people have died including children, but still that doesn't seem to scare people very much.

So tell me. How concerned you about H1N1? What measures are you taking in your home?

Pedicab Controversy

They're cheap.  They can save you a long walk.  And now, pedicabs are under the microscope in Arlington.

The city say they're posing a public safety concern at Cowboys Stadium because of the dangerous way some drive.

The city council will address the issue this week and look at possible regulations of the pedicabs.  Eliminating them is also a possibility.

Pedicab operators and customers are weighing in.  You might be surprised by some of the reaction.  Check it out online here at the33tv.com.  http://www.the33tv.com/news/kdaf-pedicab-problem-story,0,7502345.story

p.s.  Those drivers work hard!  Watching them today made me want to hit the gym and do some leg presses.  I didn't, but I thought about it.  Does that burn calories, too?!

A day in the life of....

I often wonder if viewers know everything that goes into a work day for reporters.  I have to admit that may day isn't typical, for the most part my stories aren't shot the same day they air.  Most reporters throw out a lot of story ideas during the morning or afternoon 'pitch' meeting.  Then they get cracking from scratch to get all their interviews, video and facts to report for the news that evening.  Trust me, it's a ton of work.... I really admire my co workers!

As the Entertainment Reporter I often set up stories in advance.  That's because covering fashion, celebrity interviews, beauty, special events, etc. we need to get clearance from stores, to organize models or make sure that we can shoot in a variety of locations.  That takes a lot of work, but ensures a seamless shoot!

Tonight's story, for example, I shot previously, but spent the morning writing it.  It's about deciphering dress code etiquette.  Have you ever wondered what to wear to an event when the attire on the invitation says 'Dressy Casual' Business Chic' or 'Cool Cocktail'?  Tune in tonight, I definitely have you covered.

Cold Knights, Golden Experience

Sgt. Daniel Cook gave the preflight briefing.  He said we were going up to 13-thousand feet before the jump and it was going to be cold.  He said both back doors were going to be open and we'd be in the air for about an hour.  Then he passed out the barf bags.  I knew it was going to be cold, but I was so pumped up about flying with the elite Golden Knights Parachute Team, I didn't really think about it much.  These guys gave George H.W. Bush a tandem jump.  They are the real deal and I was strapped into a seat right by the door where they jump.  Being right by the open door was awesome and brutal.  The awesome part was that this was where the team would be jumping out.  Armed with a camera, I got some great shots.  The brutal part was when Sgt. Cook came to me and yelled in my ear, "I just want to let you know we are only about half way up.  It is going to get a lot colder."  Yikes.  It was about 29-degrees already. But, luckily I was distracted by all of the action in the plane as the team got ready to jump.  Then he came over and said, "I've got some good news and bad news."  The good news was we were finally at 13-thousand feet.  The bad news was it was about 10-degrees and the jump was going to be delayed for about ten to 15-minutes.  Lucky, I was wearing long underwear and the Golden Knights gave me some gloves.  I didn't want these guys to think I was a wimp so I didn't reveal the fact that my hands felt like they were going to fall off and the cold air by the door was like a knife through my chest.  But, other than that, it was perfect.  I felt a little better when one of the Knights was shaking a little bit and his teeth were chattering.  One by one, they stood by the door, gave me a salute and they were off the plane.  IT WAS SOOOO AWESOME.  Next, time I would like to go with them...on a warm sunny day.  You can see my Walt in Plane.jpgGolden Knights photo gallery here.

Bubble Boy Disease

I never did see the 1976 movie called 'The Boy in the Plastic Bubble." John Travolta starred in the real life story about a Houston boy who was born without an immune system and had to live in a bubble. I may not have seen the movie, but today, I did meet a bubble boy. His name is Brady. He's six weeks old and does not have an immune system. He has no protection against germs or viruses which can be deadly. About a month ago, he received a bone marrow transplant from his dad. Hopefully that will help Brady grow his own immune system. Bubble Boy Disease is formally called Severe Combined Immunodeficiency, or SCID. Most people, including Brady's mom Jeanie, know it as Bubble Boy Disease. Jeanie has two brothers who survived the disease. Brady has two nephews who have survived the disease. That's five kids in one family, pretty amazing when you consider no more than 100 babies a year are diagnosed with Bubble Boy Disease. The Houston Bubble Boy died in 1984 at the age of 12. Let us all hope that Brady joins his uncles and nephews as survivors.

Finally, More H1N1 Vaccine

It is the news that health care providers in North Texas have waited to hear. About a million doses of H1N1 vaccine are "in the mail", according to state health officials.

Many providers have been concerned about the scarcity of the vaccine, especially the injectible type for very young children. Texas was among the last in line to get the vaccine, behind a lot of other states.

Some believe the delivery system needs to be reviewed. It is difficult to get answers about why it took so long. The state blames slow vaccine production, but that doesn't answer why other states received it. The answers may lie with the vaccine maker that distributes it to providers.

You can be sure issues surrounding the swine flu are going away any time soon. I've posted a link to a story about a family who feels a certain amount of stigma attached to having the virus.

D-Ware's Big Pay Day is Well Deserved

Ever since DeMarcus Ware entered The NFL back in 2005, he's always been one of the more superior athletes on the field. Now he has the bank account to match. Today, The Cowboys made Ware one of the highest paid defensive players in the league by locking him up to a six year deal worth 78 million dollars; 40 million of that is guaranteed. DeMarcus has no problems with his new contract extension.

"I feel like I've gotten what I deserved," Ware said. "You can't ask for too much money. They (Cowboys) need room to work too."

Ware's numbers speak for themselves. His sack total has increased every year he's been in the league. D-Ware has also gone to three consecutive Pro Bowls. On top of that, Ware is coming off a league best, 20 sack season. But what's more impressive than his stats, is his character.

During the off-season, DeMarcus sat by and watch other prominent defensive players cash in. During training camp, Ware was asked time after time, what's taking The Cowboys so long to offer him a contract extension. DeMarcus didn't complain or threaten to hold out. Instead he continued to do the things that's gotten him to where he's at today... and that's continuing to practice hard, challenge his teammates and whatever else it took to make he and his team better.

There's a reason why you never hear any bad reports on DeMarcus. Off the field, he's as soft as cotton candy. He's one of the nicest guys I've ever met. But on the field, he's a machine. He doesn't take plays off. His work ethic inspires others. He's a leader in every sense of the word. So by The Cowboys breaking the bank to keep Ware (who at the age of 27, is just entering his prime) in Dallas, is easily one of the smartest decisions this franchise has ever made.

His visit coincided with one of the deadly days seen in Afghanistan since the war began.

How much is too much?

Anyone's jaw would drop at the thought of paying a lawyer more than $1 million in legal fees, but for Texas exonerees that has to be a very bitter pill to swallow.

Some exonerees are paying very expensive fees to attorneys who helped pass the state's new compensation plan for the wrongly convicted, but at least one man is refusing to fork over the cash so easily. Steven Phillips spent 26 years in prison for a rape he didn't committ. Now that he is exonerated, he doesn't feel he owes his Lubbock attorney the million bucks. Phillips has filed a lawsuit to fight it.

The attorney, Kevin Glasheen says he earned every penny and helped to get Phillips about triple the amount he would have gotten under the old law. Glasheen says other exonerees are already paying him and Phillips should too because of a contract.

The fees have caused a rift in the Innocence Project of Texas. Some board members have quit in protest. They feel attorneys connected to the non-profit organization shouldn't be profiting from exonerees. Stay tuned as Phillips lawsuit goes forward. To learn more about the compensation plan, check out the link below.

Darkness

An estimated eight percent of Americans are depressed, of those, fifteen percent find that therapy and drugs don't work. When that happens, they now have something else to try, it's called Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. Magnetic impulses go through the skull to create low-dose electricity which doctors say helps blood flow and corrects chemical levels. The patient we talked to is convinced it works. He used to have trouble simply getting out of bed. He wasn't enjoying life. After a few sessions, he felt better and now does projects around the house. For people living in the darkness of depression, there may be ray of light.

Tarrant County opens Swine Flu vaccine clinic

The Tarrant County Public Health department will offer free H1N1 vaccines to pregnant women and at-risk youth on Friday.

The vaccines will be available for pregnant women and children 6 months to 18 years. The clinic will be open from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at W.G. Thomas Coliseum, 6108 Broadway, in Haltom City.

Marc Flake, a spokesman for Tarrant County, said residents do not need to bring any medical records on Friday. Residents will have to fill out a simple questionnaire to receive the vaccine.

Health officials said the nasal mist and the injectable vaccines will be available on Friday.

The health department does not expect to use the 3,000 doses of the H1N1 vaccine that they have available. They are planning to hope more events once more vaccines arrive.

Flake said he does not know when that might be.

"It's like waiting for Christmas but not knowing the day," he said.

H1N1 and Halloween: Now that's scary

Doctors say it's a first. H1N1 and Halloween. The seasonal flu has never arrived in time for Halloween, but H1N1 has. Health experts say it could be scary, but not if we all practice common sense. Those plastic or rubber masks that you have to pull over your head? Dr. Doug Hardy at Medical City Dallas says that in the proper environment, viruses can live on them for up to 12 hours. And what about those bowls and bags of candy that kids rummage through to find their vavorite sweet? Those tiny hands and fingers may be grubby and leave behind germs for the next group of kids. Dr. Hardy says this Halloween doesn't need to scary. Here are a couple of good ideas: If you try on a mask, be sure to wipe it down with alcohol. While you're trick or treating with your kids, be sure to take along some hand sanitizer. It's only Halloween, and that should do the trick.

Roy Williams Has Plenty To Prove

Cowboys Receiver, Roy Williams called Saturday's performance against The Falcons, one of the worst in his 6 year career. During Saturday's win over Atlanta, Tony Romo threw to Roy five times, but he only caught one pass and dropped two. Not exactly the type of production you want from a quote on quote, "number one receiver." However in his defense, Roy is recovering from three bruised ribs and he's making no excuses. Roy plans to bounce back against The Seahawks on Sunday.

"I don't want to blame it on rust, I don't want to blame it on medication or anything like that," said Williams. "I just played terrible."

"The thing I've got to do, I've got a chance to get better this week. I'm glad that wasn't the last game of the year because I would have to live with this for four or five months."

"But that taste is out of my mouth. I'm ready to roll. I'm ready to catch the ball and do the things I've been doing."

Roy and The Cowboys will look for their third win in a row, this Sunday against The Seattle Seahawks. Game time is set for 12:15pm at Cowboys Stadium.

Park Has Flooding Issues

It's not a bad place to build a park if you don't mind the occasional flooding. Located off Sylvan Avenue on the Elm Fork of the Trinity, west of downtown you'll find Trinity Park. It's built around a small lake named after Dallas real estate mogul Trammell Crow who donated the park's unique marble cow sculptors. The cow art was designed by Harold Clayton in 1985 and from a distance they look real.

The park also has facilities for football, soccer, hiking, running, boating and fishing.  What's incredibly to me, is whenever the Trinity gets above flood stage the park is submerged under several feet of mud and water. It's happened four times this month alone. When it drys out the city sends crews to clean it up so it can be reopened. It seems like a lot of work and frankly we saw few if anyone enjoying the park when we visited recently.

I wonder how much time and resources go into maintaining the park and if anyone ever thought this a bad idea?

Okay, maybe that wasn't where you thought I was going with the above title!  But, it is what my plants outside are getting at the moment. (I think they're roses, but with my with my perpetually black thumb, I can't be sure.)

I am sitting on the couch.  The back door is open and the rain is pounding on the patio.  I know the ground doesn't need it.  I can hear my dogs' paws squishing in the grass, their noses hovering just above as they search for water-loving frogs or bugs.  (Yes, I'm guessing on both.)  Still, I just love it.  I love the sound, the smell and the feeling of cleanliness the rain seems to leave behind.

I should be in bed, I know, but I can't resist. Catch me on air, coming soon to a tv near you.  I'll be the one with red, blurry eyes.  Night!

Halloween. Bah, humbug.

I'm sorry, I've never been a big fan of Halloween. I like to have fun like everyone else, but to me, Halloween is work. Even as a kid, I didn't like the hassle. I mean, weeks of coming up with a costume, then trying to find it in a store or begging mom into making it. As an adult, I've gone to exactly one Halloween party and I was miserable. Honestly, I have a hard enough time trying to figure out what tie goes with my shirt and slacks. I don't need any other dressing issues. Oh, by the way, I hope you have a happy Halloween.

Keeping Score With The Governor

Governor Rick Perry made a stop in Grapevine to pick up another endorsement from yet another group. This time it was the Texas Association of Builders. The group booked a room at the Gaylord Texan to make the big announcement. But reporters had other questions on their minds. "What do you think of Dick Cheney endorsement to Kay Bailey Hutchinson?" Perry's impromptu response, "I don't keep score of all of these endorsements," said Perry

How Tony Got His Groove Back

In some ways, Romo is like a magician. During the 2nd quarter of Sunday's 37 to 21 victory over The Falcons, Tony made memories of lackluster performances from earlier in the season disappear, by escaping from several tacklers, only to find Patrick Crayton in the back of the end zone for a touchdowns. And at the same time, he made fans who fell in love with Tony Romo reappear.

"I think that run that he had, he kind of got knocked out a little bit," Receiver Roy Williams said. "I think that knocked a little fun into him."

"Certain times in certain games, you might take a chance," said Tony Romo. "Other times you may not. Hopefully there's a lot more good than bad and I think we've had a little bit more of that recently."

Judging by how animated Tony was on the sidelines, it became obvious that he was having fun again. The fact that over the past two games Tony has thrown over 300 yards, has a total of five touchdowns, no interceptions and The Cowboys are now looking for their third win in a row, makes the job more enjoyable.

"You kind of let the up's and down's of whether you're winning or losing closing that side of it sometimes. You know, I'm learning how to enjoy the game and play it. Obviously, it's a little more enjoyable when you're having success and you're winning."

Romo and The Cowboys will host The Seahawks, this Sunday at noon. Last year when the two teams met, Tony was really enjoying himself. He threw for 331 yards and three touchdowns in a 34 to 9 Cowboys victory.

What Would You Do For a Flu Shot?

Be honest. Would you get up at the crack of dawn, stand in the cold with more than a thousand people to get poked in the arm with a needle? Plenty of people did today to get the H1N1 vaccination in Tarrant County.

You could see the determined look on parents faces. They wanted to get their high-risk children protected and so they put up with the hassles to get it done. You have to admire a woman, 8.5 months pregnant waiting in line for hours. If you have been pregnant, you know at that stage, you need to be close to a restroom.

People threw up their hands like they just won the lottery after getting the shot. It was interesting to see and very telling about just how serious people are taking this flu bug.

Be sure to check out my complete story at the33tv.com. Also, see how parents are stopping the spread of swine flu this Halloween.

Did you just take one?

Every year there was that one house on the block that had the lights out and one big bowl of candy at the front door on Halloween night.  There was a sign on it that read, "Please Take One."  That bowl was pretty full if you got there early.  But, there was always that one kid who dumped the whole bowl into his or her bag.  Little did all the ghouls and gobblins know they were facing a character test. Ya know, my dad always said or quoted someone who said, "The true test of character is doing the right thing even when other people aren't looking."  Dads say that stuff so it plays in your mind at decision time.  Good move pops. Alright, come clean time.  I didn't always just take one. BUT, I never felt right dumping the whole mother load into my bag.  I knew I'd have to face the music when I dumped out all my loot at the end of the night.  I'm sure my parents would have asked, "Hmmm, why do you have 250 Smarties in your bag?" AHHHHhhhh. Have a Happy Halloween!

The results are in..

We wondered how many germs kids would pass around if we let them dig into a bag full of candy and root around for their favorite treat. Maybe this wasn't a good idea. The results were pretty gross. We took the extra candy wrappers to an infectious disease expert who tested the candies for germs and bacteria. Oh boy, did he find germs and bacteria. More testing would be needed to learn if H1N1 was among the germs, but the results were clear. The controlled candies were germ free. The heavily handled candies were full of germs. Was this a groundbreaking study? Nope. But it was a fun little test to see how those tiny hands can spread germs. Now, let's all get out there and have a Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween

If you read my post from a couple of days ago, you know I'm not much for Halloween. It's not that I don't like it, it just seems like a lot of work. Speaking of work, I did that today and I did a Halloween story, and I must say I had a good time. The people were friendly and the kids were cute. Don't get me wrong, I'm still not dressing up next year, but Halloween has found my soft spot, like the middle of big Milky Way chocolate bar. Happy Halloween everyone.
