Asleep At The Wheel
Trucks drivers are like most professionals, they take pride in their job. I spent the day talking with truckers about the NTSB's recommendations to screen for a common sleep disorder, sleep apnea. Most drivers agreed it's not a bad idea. The problem is how does the government plan on implementing those tests.
Drivers are required to get biannual physicals but if they don't know they have a sleep disorder they might not discuss it with the doctor. Trucker Marshall Grady told me, "I don't think its a good thing but I guess the only way you'll know you have a problem is to get tested for it." The fear is obvious, a positive diagnosis could sideline their career. NTSB suggests allowing drivers to retain their licence if they allow to be treated for the disorder.
