Bubble Boy Disease

I never did see the 1976 movie called 'The Boy in the Plastic Bubble." John Travolta starred in the real life story about a Houston boy who was born without an immune system and had to live in a bubble. I may not have seen the movie, but today, I did meet a bubble boy. His name is Brady. He's six weeks old and does not have an immune system. He has no protection against germs or viruses which can be deadly. About a month ago, he received a bone marrow transplant from his dad. Hopefully that will help Brady grow his own immune system. Bubble Boy Disease is formally called Severe Combined Immunodeficiency, or SCID. Most people, including Brady's mom Jeanie, know it as Bubble Boy Disease. Jeanie has two brothers who survived the disease. Brady has two nephews who have survived the disease. That's five kids in one family, pretty amazing when you consider no more than 100 babies a year are diagnosed with Bubble Boy Disease. The Houston Bubble Boy died in 1984 at the age of 12. Let us all hope that Brady joins his uncles and nephews as survivors.
