Parents cope after fatal medical error
It is hard to even imagine the heartbreak that Kenya and Greg Duque must be feeling. Just when they thought their toddler was going to be OK following a series of touch and go operations for a rare disorder, she was given an overdose of Heparin, a blood-thinner.
Almariah did not survive. Now as the hospital investigates and plays the blame game, this family must try to put the pieces of their lives back together. They will. They are strong people who say they will use any settlement money to start a foundation in their daughter's name to educate others about medical errors.
It is just a reminder that all of us need to never let the guard down in any medical setting. Be sure to ask questions, lots of them and be watchful. It is too late for Almariah, but maybe her death can help spread awareness and remind medical professionals that our lives are often in their hands.
