This was no hoax

Usually when we are called out to cover a bomb threat, it turns out to be a prank. But, Sunday in Colleyville it was the real deal. A woman found a bomb in a FedEx package on ehr doorstep. When she opened it, it malfunctioned.

Police were able to get the bomb squad to blow it up and no one was hurt. It just proves that violence of this sort can happen anywhere and that everyone needs to be vigilant, no matter where you live.

Sleep tight not light

Insomnia gets all the ink but there is something just as bad and it's called hypersomnia. Hypersomnia is a condition that allows you to go to sleep but not enough restful sleep to say awake the next day. People often claim they sleep for 9 or 10 hours and can't understand why they're so tired. It's because they're sleeping like a baby, they nod off for a few hours and then wake up. It's more than just an energy suck, it's also a health issue that may cause heart problems, lost productivity and car accidents.

With that said I think I'll close now by saying good night. I hope you don't sleep like a baby.

Still Searching for Suspects

If you listen to the 911 call from a Colleyville woman who just opened a bomb, you will hear a calm and collected caller. Police are praising her for doing "all the right" things.

But the search still continues for the person who put a bomb on her front step in a FedEx package.

I think I just had a thought

Only women know what it's like to be pregnant so I have to take what they say as the truth. Many expecting mothers say they can't remember anything, sometimes their husbands name. It's called mumnesia or pregnancy brain. Doctors warn mothers-to-be to be aware that they may forget things and parenting books even mention pregnancy brain. Now some Australian scientists say you can forget all of that because mumnesia doesn't exist.

Researchers followed 1,200 women and tested the mental skills of those who became pregnant against those who did not. The result? No difference in their mental abilities.

So who do you believe? Raw science or the maternal instincts of women all over the world? If you think I'm going to answer that question you can forget it.

Should bullying be a crime?

Tami Carmichael can't even live in her Joshua home anymore, after he 13-year old son hung himself in the barn. The 8th-grader was picked on at school for years because he was small. Carmichael says he was stripped naked and stuffed in a trash can, by bigger students.

The mother is using her anguish to push for change. She wants Texas lawmakers to adopt a tough anti-bullying law that would allow for prosecutors to target those who bully and those in charge, who ignore it.

The proposal follows a Massachusetts law that was signed yesterday by the Governor there. It is considered one of the toughest in the country and follows the suicide of a young girl who was teased at school.

Look mom, it looks just like candy!

And that's been a problem for a long, long time. Tobacco products that look like candy, prescription medicines that look like candy and now pediatricians are worried that nicotine replacement therapies are beginning to look way too much like candy. We compared regular chewing gum to NRT gum and could not tell the difference except inside one of them was 2 milligrams of nicotine.

Celebrity Jessica Simpson told Jay Leno that she's been hooked on nicotine gum since she was a kid. She believes a friends mom thought she was giving her a regular piece of chewing gum but it wasn't. During and eleven year period ending in 2007, more than 9,000 kids were exposed to NRT and five of them died. If it's as simple as making potentially dangerous products that don't look or taste like candy and it will save lives then maybe we should just make them to look and taste like--medicine.

Call me crazy.

Mother always liked you best

Mom isn't supposed to play favorites but the truth is they often do. Maybe they don't mean to and maybe the less loved child is a monster but regardless of why experts say less loved kid usually suffers psychological troubles.

A doctor we interviewed said parents are like anyone else, they have a favorite flavor of ice cream, some like winter better than summer and some like Jane better than Sam.

I raise the issue because mothers day is just around the corner. The doctor said if you feel you were less loved than your sibling mothers day is not the day to get even.

Nobody feels better by ruining mothers day--even if mom deserves it or not.

The Natural Gas Divide Deepens

Concerns over natural gas drilling run deep today, even as a change in Town Council members settles.

Yesterday's election seemingly alters the structure of the council, making the new majority in favor of what they call more responsible gas drilling.

That will please the thousands who signed a petition asking for a 180-day moratorium on Centralized Collection Facilities and related pipelines.  It does not please others, who are afraid of more lawsuits leading to higher taxes as well a decrease in property rights.

Criminal or Stressed-out military spouse?

Talk to different people and they will have different opinions about Carla Spaniel, the woman accused of abandoning her toddlers in a Dallas hotel room.

The woman was arrested over the weekend, after police say she was combative and drunk. They found her children naked, hungry and alone.

Spaniel is the military wife of an Army reservist who has been deployed three time in five years. He has been in Iraq since August. Some say the stress of "doing it all" is often too much for military wives to bear and can take some people over the edge.

Spaniel could lose her job as a principal at a middle school in Fort Worth and she is facing felony charges. What do you think? Should this military wife be cut some slack?

Colleyville Debates Natural Gas Drilling

A city commission heard public comment tonight and could approve Colleyville's first well site.

Like in other North Texas cities, the topic has divided community members.

Some are hoping to "cash in" on lease contracts.  Others are fearful of health and air quality hazards, as well as the threat to property values.

The Planning and Zoning Commission has three choices and is debating them right now.

Stick that in your hookah and smoke it

Hookah use is growing in north American so much so that 23% of people between the ages of 18 and 24 have used a water pipe within the past year, at least according to a Canadian study. Health experts say it's a huge health concern because of a common belief that hookah smoking is safer than smoking cigarettes. People who use hookah's think the water filters out the bad stuff. Scientists say some soluble toxins may be removed but there is still nicotine, tar and possibly more metals than what you would find in cigarettes.

I interviewed several people who all thought that usuing a water pipe to smoke tobacco was safer. Doctor's say that's simply not true and a dangerous thing to believe.

Like many things in life, it's all smoke and mirrors.

You know them as Hooter's, Twin Peaks and others. But, in Southlake some residents want the sports bars with waitresses in skimpy clothes to stay out.

In neighboring Grapevine there are already four of these sports bars and many say they are a welcome asset, offering consumers choices.

But, tell me what you think. Do the sports bars go too far? Are they unsuitable for a family-friendly community?

Entry requirements: 50+ pounds to lose

Have you ever been in a gym and everyone there was Mr. Olympia or Ms. Octorber? Yep, it's an other worldly experience and now women who have more than 50 pounds to lose won't have to live the experience. A Better U Fitness in Dallas has devised a fitness camp for women who need to lose 50 or more pounds. What a great idea. The gym can be an uncomfortable place because everyone knows how to work the equipment and some people just look way too fancy in their workout clothing. Not at full figure fitness because the women all have the same thing in common: they have nothing to lose but weight.

The feeling I got while reporting on the story was the women really bonded, sort of a we're all in this together. A doctor we interviewed liked the concept of the class because getting out of shape is a self defeating cycle. You get out of shape and then feel strange going to the gym and you get in even worse shape.

Not anymore, these women now have a place to fit in.

30 Day Sex Challenge

Got your attention, eh?  Well, through my powers of persuasion, (not really.  These guys were easy!)  a Granbury couple has agreed to give it a "go".

At my request, they will follow in the steps of a UK couple, and try to have sex everyday for one month.  It's wacky, yes, but tis my world as the station's sex reporter.

As if we haven't invaded their privacy enough, they will also keep a diary, take some G rated photos and blog daily, so we can live vicariously through their bedroom doors.

Botox giveth and botox taketh

Don't you just love studies? This one comes from Weill Cornell Medical College in New York where researchers have concluded that Btox does erase wrinkles but also may create new ones. Doctors say Botox paralyzes muscles which helps stop wrinkles but the process also makes other muscles work overtime and may create more lines.

The lines are apparently visible on celebs like Renee Zellweger and Nicole Kidman. So what does a girl, or guy do with this information? One woman told be she'll get more Botox to take of the new wrinkles.

If that doesn't work? She said she'll just get another nose job.

I'll keep an eye out for nose job side effects.

Fort Worth Settles Taser Lawsuit

Fort Worth will pay the family of Michael Jacobs $2 million to settle a wrongful death lawsuit. The 24-year old man died after being tased by a veteran officer for 54 seconds.

The family attorney calls it one of the largest settlements the city has paid out. Brian Eberstein says it indicates the police department has idenfitied lapses in taser training for officers.

Neighbors say the money isn't nearly enough and can't make up for a lost life. Tell me what you think. In the wake of deaths, should tasers be banned?

If at first you don't succeed..

More than 200,000 thousand Americans undergo weight loss surgery every year, out of those roughly between 5% and 10% are revised. The reason can range from chronic acid reflux to the procedure simply not working. The most common procedure is simply fixing the gastric bypass while revising gastric band is second.

We met two women today who both had gastric band surgeries that for one reason or another they were not happy with so they opted for gastric bypass.

The doctor we interviewed said that while there are severel bariatric options for people none of are guaranteed to work perfectly.

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.

Parents can also use a special safety vest that can be purchased online.

Prom & Graduation Safety

So many times, it's the biggest events in life that hold the most potential for tragedy.

Proms and graduations fit that bill. Maybe it's the booze, the drugs, the high expectations, the peer pressure.

It can literally be a pressure cooker that leads to poor decisions and life-long consequences.

More on the risks and what one North Texas woman went through her on her big night as a senior in high school here online at the33tv.com

How thin is too thin? I'm talking to you buddy!

We've all heard about the pressure women are under to stay thin. Peer pressure and media images are intense. Move over girls, here come the guys.

Since 1990 the the percentage of men who have eating disorders has gone up from 10 to 25. Health experts say men are now bombarded with the same super-skinny images as women. Case in point, next month (June) male mannequins with 27-inch waistlines will start appearing in clothing stores. We went to a hip boutique in Dallas and measured the waist of two mannequins. The older model had a 33 inch waist while the newer one had a 30 inch waist. These mannequins will look fat next to the 27 incher.

Kate Moss, meet Nate Moss. Manorexia is here or at the very least coming to a clothing store near you.

Spread a little sunshine

File this one under 'Another vitamin D Study.' It seems nobody is getting enough of the stuff these days and now you can add pregnant women to the mix. According to a new study about 70% of American women don't get enough vitamin D. Experts say they are deficient for several reasons, poor diets, little sunshine and not taking vitamins.

Doctors advise women to start taking prenatal vitamins at least a month before conception. Great idea, but many women simply don't plan their pregnancy. The health risks for the baby include respiratory infections and childhood wheezing.

Doctor say beginning a vitamin routine after you're pregnant is simply too late and doesn't allow vitamin D to build up to a good level.

Bottom line? Take your vitamins, eat right and spread a little sunshine.

Give me a double shot of that stuff

This is one of review of previous study stories. Some researchers combed through 13 studies and decided that late shift workers who drink coffee are more focused, alert and make fewer mistakes than people who were caffeine free. I've worked some crazy shifts in this business and I can tell you I think the study has merit.

We interviewed a couple of nurses who had worked the overnight shift for about a decade. One drank as many as 10 cups of coffee a night and agree that she was more focused and better able to perform her duties. The other nurse said caffeine didn't do anything about at about 2 a.m. he would get sleepy.

I don't know if caffeine makes gives you focus or not but I do know that people in the newroom really focus on caffeine. You should see the breakroom about 7:30 p.m.

Give be a double shot of that stuff.

Now hear this! Michael Noble rocks

Now for an inspiring story. Michael Noble is a recent graduate of SMU. I know, you're saying 'so what, lots of kids are." True, but Michael was born deaf and at the tender age of two became the first child in north Texas to receive a cochlear implant. He was a medical trailblazer and his parents were brave because the FDA had only given the device approval to be used on children two weeks before.

The story just gets better. Last weekend he graduated from SMU with honors after just three years. This from a kid who couldn't hear and then had six years of intense therapy to retrain the brain to respond to sound.

He's thankful too, that techology had advanced at just the right time, that his parents made a bold decision and that therapists never stopped getting Michael up to speed.

Michael is living proof that technology is great, but the combination of technology and determination is even better.

Graduation Wish

Think back to your high school graduation and that proud moment when you crossed the stage to get your diploma.

That is all a GHS senior wants is to live that moment, but he's hospitalized in need of a heart and kidney.

Brad Stoner is determined to overcome and make the trip with his classmates, but that will depend on his health. The transplanted heart he received when he was 4 years old is failing and his condition is declining.

He says by some stroke of luck, he was cleared by doctors to attend prom and now he hopes for one more miracle; the chance to go to graduation.

History books are history

New curriuclum standards coming to a Texas school near you are rewriting history, according to critics.

But supporters argue the more conservative changes bring back to "balance" a history curriculum that had become too liberal over the years.

Family Tragedy & a Heroic Effort

Honestly, I haven't met many people like Kyle Evans.  Hours after talking to him, I still get chills thinking about his words and his actions.

Evans is an unassuming, thoughtful, soft-spoken Kaufman County tow truck driver.  He is also a hero.  It's a title he disagrees with, but as I told him this afternoon, "Too bad."  Some things are beyond dispute.

Evans pulled a burning man from a car fire last night.  The flames were a foot from his face.  That man, Wyndell Greene, of Frisco, surely would have died if it weren't for Evans.  Unfortunately, other members of his family did.

Who is to Blame?

It is one of those stories that just tears at you. A Frisco family was demolished along I-20, near Terrell. A mother and two children were killed. A father remains hospitalized with severe burns.

But, is a truck driver to blame? The driver of a big rig plowed into the family's SUV. So far, there is no explanation. The driver refused to answer my questions from his home in Mississippi.

Was he distracted or sleepy? Who knows. I'm sure investigators will get to the bottom of it. But, whatever the reason it will never make whole this broken family.
