The horrors of high heels

Oh, what a double-edged sword. High heels makes your legs look longer and sexier. They make your body seem thinner.

But, doctors say there is a very painful price to being that hot. Think blisters, hammer toes, bunions, as well as foot, ankle, knee and back pain.

Ouch! Makes you think twice (maybe?) about that to-die-for stiletto.

But high heels are here to stay. You just need to be careful. Doctors say cut down on the time you spend in your higher-ups. Whether it's during the day or the evening, give your feet a break.

The higher the heel, the more pressure there is on the balls of your feet and the body isn't made to carry its weight on the balls of the feet. Also, the more narrow the front the shoe, the more problems you're walking into. Wear wisely!!

Message in a Bottle

The FDA is out to save your skin. It's about time. I recenty went to the drug store to buy a bottle of sunscreen and I was amazed at the vast and confusing line of products. UVA, UVB, SPF led me to believe I was SOL.

But fear not, the FDA is going to save my skin by recommending labeling changes that may include a star rating system to give consumers a better idea how all of those chemicals in the bottle will protect your skin. The more stars the better. The FDA is also considernig changing the term 'water proof' to 'water resistant.'

The FDA was expected to announce the new guidelines last month but now it looks like October at the earliest.

My advice to consumers, and I say this because I know--staring at the confusing sunscreen labels can make you go blind.

Neighborhood Opposes Water Park

So with temperatures set to hit 100 degrees, who wouldn't want a water park in their neighborhood? Some residents in Roanoke oppose a new Hawaiian Falls because they say it will break the peace and create traffic snarls.

An estimated 500 cars a day are expected to pour through the neighborhoods near Byron Nelson Parkway, where the water park is slated to be built.

City officials say it will create jobs and bring in sales tax revenue. But, residents don't want their quality of life compromised.

Council is set to decide later this month.

Caring for Care Flight

It's a terrible day when any aircraft crashes and people are killed but there is something about a medical chopper crash that really hits you hard. Today a Care Flight chopper crashed while on a maintenance flight that killed both the pilot and mechanic. These are the the people who come to the rescue of others in need.

The CEO said it was the company's hardest day. I feel for the workers at Care Flight and family members who lost loved ones.

Today I really care for the people at Care Flight. Today they need a little TLC.

An apple a day..

An apple a day does keep the doctor away and ten year old Mary Harris is living proof. Mary's BMI and cholesterol levels were high so Dr. Jane Sadler gave her a prescription that didn't involve a trip to the drug store. She was told not to eat school provided lunches and become more active. Let's put it this way--Mary got moving.

Three months after doctors orders Mary's cholesterol levels were greatly improved and her BMI went down. The goal wasn't to lose weight because Mary will grow into her weight.

Mary now walks home from school with her friends and eats lost of fruits and drinks plenty of water rather than consuming chips and soda.

You want health care reform? Here's a place to start. Pack your own lunch and take a walk.

Doctors orders.

Are girls smarter than boys?

The top 10 graduates at Central High School in Keller are all males. It is rare to have all boys occupy those top spots. Keller hasn't seen in before. School officials say it just worked out that way.

But, it does raise questions about which sex is smarter. In texas, test scores and graduation rates indicate that girls are pulling ahead of boys. But, some aren't ready to say the state has a "boy crisis" just yet.

It will make for an interesting graduation. By the way, the 11th spot at Central did go to a girl. m

I can breathe again

Summer in Texas can be brutal--especially if you're a kid with asthma. There must be a bunch of them because about 9-million American kids suffer from asthma and that's why Baylor-Irving hosted a one-day event called 'Camp Airways." The camp is designed to inform kids about their condition and make sure they have the knowledge to safely get through summer. Camp Airways is not your ordinary camp--the kids run to learn about their physical limits and play games that allows to soak up asthma information and have fun at the same time.

We had our first Orange Ozone alert in DFW today. For those of you who don't know what that is it's a day when the air is unhealthy to breathe.

File this one under "Timing is Everything" because Camp Airways arrived at just the right time.

Turn on the heat

That's what race fans got today at TMS: heat!  There was the expected high-speed, lane changing excitement thousands wanted and the temperatures they probably didn't.

North Texas saw triple-digit heat today, causing tailgaters to tote extra water and sunscreen.

TMS took precautions as well.   See them here on The 33.

Inspiration from a High School graduate

A lot of high school students work hard to graduate.  It is an accomplishment and they deserve praise.  But for most, it isn't the struggle it has been for 19-year old Brad Stoner.

There were missed classes and assignments.  There was makeup homework from a hospital bed.  Stoner is in need of a heart and kidney transplant and has spent much of the past month in the hospital.

His dream was to graduate with his friends.  It's a dream that wasn't a slam dunk.  So much so, hospital staff school officials conspired to surprise Stoner with a diploma late last month while he was in the hospital.

Tonight, dreams comes true.  Here on The 33.

Way to go, Brad.

Body parts that get no respect

When was the last time you even thought about your earlobe? Maybe never and that's my point. You never know how important your earlobes are until they start sagging or even worse--torn. Guys generally don't have much of a problem with this but females it's an issue. The earlobes sag or droop after years of wearing heavy earrings or getting then snagged on the phone and torn out. It pained me to even write that sentence.

But there is hope! More and more women are have a procedure known as earlobe rejuvenation. Basically, the doctor fills sagging earlobes with the same kind of fillers often used on the face. It takes care of lines and drooping. Sometimes surgery is needed on earlobes that have been torn.

My wife likes to say that beauty is pain. I think she's right.

New Help for Breastfeeding, Working Mothers

Working mothers who breastfeed know about slipping into a restroom or even a car to "pump" at work. It has happened to most mothers, but Uncle Sam to the rescue, right?

The new health care law requires employers to provide a private place and time for breastfeeding mothers to express milk while on the job. The breaks are not paid. It is what some working moms have been waiting for, but it does put some stress on employers who are now scrambling to fullfill the requirements.

Summer Danger: As Close as the Backyard

Most parents say, "it could never happen to me". But, a Colleyville couple knows it can. Christina and Steven Barnard's toddler drowned in the family's backyard pool. Christina says she looked away for just a few seconds and it happened that fast. Dylan was a good swimmer and never went near the pool.

The Barnard's tragedy highlights how quickly a deadly accident can happen in the pool. Last year Texas saw a record number of child drownings, most of them in swimming pools and bathtubs. 105 children died in what are preventable deaths.

The Barnard's are asking paretns to be extra cautious. They have their faith to get them through this tragedy. They are also creating a positive force. They have set up a charity in Dylan's name to create water wells in Africa. Even though water took their child, they are now bringing it to other children, to save lives. http://bit.ly/DawnStories

Swimsuit ready?

Swimsuit season is here and the ladies are getting ready--to have the veins in their legs taken care of. Yep, business is booming for doctors who treat varicose and spider veins. Every year, usually in April, women seek treatments that can nearly $3,000.00 a leg.

I interviewed a woman who had one leg treated and was waiting to get the other one treated--the difference was amazing. I'm told the procedure is often covered by insurance and for those lucky enough to have the procedure, they've got a leg up on swimsuit season.

Skin Deep

Melasma is yet another reason to say out of the sun. Melasma is a skin condition that impacts mostly women, mostly as in 90% of the people who have it are female. It's pretty common too, especially in people with darker skin tones. You can spot a person with melasma because they usually have grayish or brownish patches on their face.

Believe it or not doctors aren't really sure what causes it but people with a family history are more likely to have it than others. Sometimes it goes away on it's own but usually creams can lighten the spots.

Here's the important part--health experts say that nothing will work unless you protect your skin from the sun.

Easier said than done in Texas. Today I'm talking to a doctor and patient who has melasma. It should be interesting and you can see it tonight at nine.

Ovulating women: are they hot?

You betcha, according to research. Study say men find women more attractive when they're ovulating.

Seems to go against the grain, no? The science did surprise some North Texans we talked to today. And yes, I felt a little squeamish (okay, a lot) approaching people on the street about this one!

But if you think primal, animalistic and instinctual, the logic is there.

Get some exercise gamer guy

They study everything these days, including the health of professional video gamers. Leave it to researchers at The University of Essex in England to learn that some professonal gamers have the reflexes of a fighter pilot--that's the good news--and the fitness level of a 60-year old chain smoker. Ouch.

We interviewed a former professional gamer who used to practice and compete for at least 10 hours a day. That doesn't leave much time for getting in shape.

I also interviewed a cardiologist who said that kids who spend too much time in front of a monitor will spend time at the doctors office earlier than they'd like. If you have the body of a 60- year old when you're 25- years old you can expect to be in the hospital in your 40's.

Video games really don't interest me because I feel like I've wasted my time. Fortunately for me I don't get the same feeling after watching TV and I'm not concerned about my fighter pilot reactions.

Rumbling stumbling and bumbling..

The landscape of college football is changing and I think it's great--if-- somehow all of this leads to playoff system. I love the passion of college football but I simply don't like the way the national champion is chosen. And I do mean chosen. Coaches polls, strength of schedule and computers..please. Name one other sport that doesn't have it's champion crowned by surviving a playoff system.

I love the idea of a Pac 16 with Texas and the rest of the gang out west. A few super conferences may help pave the way for an eventual playoff system. I'm also big on history and don't think the bowl games would have to disappear in exchange for a playoff structure.

I have a hard time getting too involved in college football when every year there are so many questions and complaints about who should have been the national champion.

Look, the people at the NCAA and the universities are smart people but college football without a playoff system is just plain dumb. Until then, I'll waste my free time on the NFL.

Texas Fans Can Breathe Easy

Texas fans have been on edge, wondering if the university will stay in the Big 12 or go. The Pac-10 has put out feelers to lure UT away.

But, news is developing that Texas officials will announce a deal tomorrow to stay with the Big 12 and it's 10 remaining teams. The deal comes with a reported $25 million dollar TV network deal, which helps to sweeten the pot.

It is a relief to some Texas fans who did not want to see those prized in-state rivalries dry up. It appears those will stay in place.

Why didn't I think of that?

That's what I said to myself as reported on my story today. Here's what I wish I'd thought of: A panic button that patients can push when patients feel pain at the dentist's office. Now that's a great idea. I don't like going to the dentist but I'm not afraid but I know some people are. A recent survey in Canada found that 400,000 people were so afraid they actually avoid going to the dentist. Recent studies have found a link between gum disease and heart problems and low birth weights.

We intereviewed the only dentist in Dallas that has the panic button. Clint Herzog says patients rarely use it--he calls it a security blanked because it just makes people feelling better knowing that it's there. A patient agreed. She's not afraid of the dentist but she even felt better just knowing she could control potential pain by pushing a button.

This is such a no-brainer--I wish I'd thought of that.

Sleep and Sex

Do I have your attention? Well, the above pair don't always make the best of bed fellows.

Tonight on the tube I outlined the threat sleep deprivation poses to people's sex lives. It isn't pretty.

Now as promised on said tube, some pointers. Dr. Craig Schwimmer of The Snoring Center in Dallas tells us this: (Well, the first one is for me).

*Avoid caffeine and alcohol close to bedtime. (I am Diet Coke addict.)

*Get enough sleep. That's 8 hours.

*Only use the bed for sleep and sex.

*See sunlight every morning to reset your circadian rhythm.

*Treat your snoring and sleep apnea!

The procedure we watched Dr. Schwimmer do today took just a few minutes. He called in "non-destructive", using a needle for the incision instead of a knife or laser. First, John Dontle got a shot to numb the roof of his mouth. During the procedure, he didn't cry or grimace and was talking and drinking shortly after. Impressive.

Sleep (and romance) well, viewers!

Designer Vitamins

Who knew? Certainly not me. I know there are people out there with serious diet restrictions including diets that require people to be gluten free. Okay, I knew that--but I didn't really think that those diet restrictions can make it difficult to get the daily dose of required vitamins and minerals. Here comes designer vitamins to the rescue.

We interviewed a woman who was diagnosed with celiac disease and was virtually stripped of vitamins so she had her blood tested by a special needs nutritionist and bingo--she got the vitamins she needed. If she was low on B1, she got B1. If her level of vitamin C was fine, it was left alone.

It took about two months of a new diet and vitamins to get her healthy again and she no longer needs designer vitamins but still needs vitamins that are gluten and filler free.

Designer vitamins? Who knew.

Get your kicks playing soccer?

I don't like soccer--way too  much running around and way too little to show for it. SCORE already! But I am clearly in the minority. Here in the US there are about 15 to 18 MILLION soccer players and according to a recent study many of them are getting hurt.

When you think of injuries you generally think of football, American football, Cowboys type football but soccer actually has a higher injury rate than football.

Football has more serious injuries but when it comes to sprains, bumps, bruises and torn ACL's soccer wins hands down.

All eyes are on the World Cup Soccer tournament going on right now--except mine.

Considering what I know now about soccer--I'm glad I don't get my kicks playing the sport.

The earlobe: The forgotten body part

Facelifts, nose jobs, breast implants, liposuction and then the earlobe--the forgotten body part. You don't really think about your earlobes until one splits in two--which is more common than you think. Large and heavy earrings are all the rage and the earlobes often pay the price in the form of sagging and oversized holes.

To the rescue? Earlobe rejuvenation. Doctors can stitch the lobe and if the damage is less extensive they can simply inject some filler into the area and make it stronger.

Gravity, clothing, kids and cell phones are often the cause of earrings that have been ripped out.

I don't know which body part will become the next forgotten body part. Welcome home earlobes! Long live the earlobe.

How is this even possible?

An infertility doctor tells me that 9 out of 10 men are not told by doctors that some cancer surgeries and treatments may leave them infertile. That's a little like the CIA not talking to the FBI, you're asking for something bad to happen. There are many documented cases where well informed men have saved their sperm before undergoing surgery or treatment and became fathers later on. A guy in the UK had kids 13 years after freezing his sperm before surgery for testicular cancer.

I met an infertility doctor this week who is passionate about getting other doctors to let patients know that they have options regarding having kids in the future. Making a deposit before--just in case.

I bring this up on the eve of Fathers Day because even if the 9 out of 10 statistic is a bit high-- 5 out of 10 still way out of bounds.

In 2010 in the afterglow of health care reform I ask again. How is this even possible?

Breast Cancer: You can run but you can't hide

Scientists have been hot on the trail of a cure for breast cancer for years and it seems they're getting close. Today we learn scientists have discovered a simple blood test can detect breast cancer long before a tumor develops. Here is how it works--a specific protein is on the surface of breast cancer tumors and when the protein is detected women are three times more likely to develop breast cancer. Of course early detection is the key to survival for many women.

Researchers warn that they're not sure if the test can be a stand-alone breast cancer detector but that it probably can be used in conjunction with other tests like self examinations and mammograms.

The day is coming when breast cancer tumors will have no place to hide.

Man in a suitcase

Medical Tourism is growing. It's always nice to save some money but many people believe saving money on surgery in a foriegn country comes with a possible high price--if there is a complication there are very few avenues for recourse.

We met women who had weight loss surgery in Mexico and the procedure went very wrong. Now she needs revision surgery but she can't get her doctor in Tijuana to return her calls or emails.

A bariatric surgeon we talked to today offered this advice--buyer beware.

Always good advice especially when you're considering surgery in a far off land where the rules and protections may not be the same.

They don't have an app for that but they do have a name, it's called Technosis. I did a story on it about four years ago--we took a teenage girl's cell phone, hardline and laptop away for a week. She was shaking after the first night. As technology has grown so has the addiction to it. It's not like you're hooked on heroin or anything and it doesn't really hurt anyone but an addiction is an addiction.

Well educated women are the most likley to never have kids and while there are many reasons women don't have kids--less pressure to have kids may be the main reason.

Researchers tested nearly 300 women and 63 of the patients who reached menopause--scientists were able to predict the date to within four months.

Early menopause can start in the mid 40's instead of the mid 50's--that's important information for women who may decide to become pregnant later in life.

We interviewed a 26- year old woman who is 18-weeks pregnant with her first child, she learned today she can expect a baby girl on Thanksgiving--maybe one day she'll know exactly when she'll enter into menopause.

You just have to love vampire movies

I love vampire movies the same way I love gangster or mob movies but I've never purchased a cape or fedora. I say this because the Twilight vampire series is not only a blockbuster but it has fans totally engrossed in all things vampire. There is a new pale skin trend made popular by the movies and skin doctors are thrilled because it may prevent youngsters from going to tanning salons to get that bronze look which research shows can be a skin cancer threat.

Now people are forking over big dollars for dentists to create vampire teeth--yes--people actually spend money so they can have fans like Edward.
