Mr. Roboto

We can send a man to the moon and now we can have a robot generate wires to straighten teeth. Modern miracle? Probably not--unless you're a teenager and those robot generated wires allowed you to have your braces removed early.

An orthodontist told me that the 3-D generated, robot produced wires don't make your teeth move faster but rather in a more direct line to their ideal location.

We interviewed an 18- year old girl who wanted to make sure she got her braces off before she went to college. She had them removed five months before the fall semester starts.

Modern miracle? Ask her when she starts her freshman year.

Gay, Jews -- and now, children!

Westboro Baptist Church is notorious for targeting gays and jews and now the group from Topeka, Kansas will target children.

Protesters will be in North Texas where they will picket the Dallas Jewish Community Center, where children are attending a summer camp. Parents are concerned, but center officials say there will be no counter-protest.

This group claims to have held about 44,000 protests, nationwide.

How much is too much?

That's an easy question if you're a guy with a condition called Gynecomastia. It's a big word for men who have larger than normal breasts. Men with large breasts are often embarassed and don't take their shirts off to go swimming or take part in events that might draw attention to their--well--breasts.

Today we interviewed an 18- year old guy with gynecomastia who wsa just about to have breast reduction surgery. It's pretty common--the surgeon we interviewed performs about 20- surgeries a year. Gynecomastia is caused by many things including obesity, hormone imbalance, smoking marijuana and drugs--both prescription and over the counter.

The good news is that the condition is totally treatable with a little liposuction and removal of breast tissue. The bad news it's generally not covered by insurance.

How much is too much? If you're a guy with gynecomastia the answer is very personal

Justin Bieber Bound

Well, if you have to work a holiday (and I do), why not head out to an event thousands of people are paying big money to attend?

I bet girls half my age haven't slept for days anticipating tonight's concert.

I, however, am bringing earplugs.  And that's just for the parking lot!

See how I survive, or maybe 'if", tonight at 9pm on The 33.  Are your fingers crossed?

Au naturel

That's the idea behind the growing movement of modern nudism. Those who are shedding their clothes are also breaking stereotypes by being in their 20's, 30's and 40's and reaching out.

Skinbook is a social networking site, fashioned along the lines of Facebook. It's founder is 25-years old, the average age of its members is between 35 and 40, and there are more women and couples.

Game? Check out North Texans touting the benefits of being in the buff.

Dallas Officer Crosses The Line

Patrons and merchants on Lower Greenville cried foul early Sunday when a Dallas officer fired 13 rounds from a pepper ball gun over the heads of bar goers.

Police say the veteran officer violated policy by even having the gun on the streets. There are stict rules for deployment and use.

Business owners worry the incident may scare away customers, who are just now beginning to return amid safety concerns in the nightlife district.

Eye opening story

My story today is about more Asian women having eyelid reconstruction surgery. It's an interesting topic and the women have many reasons for undergoing the technique. Some--after seeing so many western images over the years--think Hollywood--simply want to look more western. Some do it simply to make themselves feel better.

I think it's just an iteresting topic. I'm interviewing a DFW plastic surgeon who has written a book on Asian eye reconstruction and has performed many procedures. I'm also eager to meet a 24- year old who recently had the surgery.

There are many reasons Asian women undergo the procedure and I can't wait to hear hers. If she's happy, I'm happy.

No Shame

Two Dallas robbers are guilty of the above, among other things.

They showed no shame by holding 10-year old and 13-year old brothers at gunpoint while they stole electronics from the family's apartment.

The price of a flat-screen television, vlaptop and video games is expensive: a family's ability to feel safe.

We spoke with the brave 13-year old, David, his mother and older brother.

Sad story.  Nice family.  Thieves with no shame.

Any exercise is good exercise

I used to be in pretty good shape--now not so much. I'll take some of the blame but honestly north Texas is a brutal place to stay fit. It's either hot, cold, windy or humid and sometimes it's all in one day. I grew up in northern California where the weather is bit more temperate which make being outdoors and active much easier.

A bunch of workers with the Baylor hospital system have a way to beat the heat and stay in shape at the same time. They use the skybridge between Baylor Heart Hospital and Baylor Regional as the road to fitness. Seven roundtrips equals one mile and not once do they have to step foot outside where in July it's hot and muggy. So far they've walked more than 6,500 hundred miles and have lost lots of weight and at least one woman has seen her cholesterol level drop dramatically.

Many of them would probably not be as good about getting exercise if they had to go outside to do it.

Video Sex Chat Lines Gear Up For iPhone 4

The latest technology is here and while the iPhone 4 offers some unique features, the live video chat is raising some concern.

A user can chat live with a compatible phone and that is opening the door for pornography and porn. Experts say it is time for parents to have a talk with their teen about safety on computers and mobile phones.

Masturbation -- On the Job!

How would you feel if you were just doing your job and someone dropped their pants and masturbated in front of you.

It happened to Tanya Ragan, who is a property manager in downtown Dallas. She says the homeless shelter nearby has a lot to do with the problems of lewd behavior in the area. She says she find trash and human waste everywhere.

She wants The Bridge to do a better job of screening the people who stay at the shelter. Shelter officials say they require identification and they say it is better to have the homeless off the streets. What do you think?

Fluid Sexuality

Science suggests women's sexual preferences aren't necessarily solidified in their early 20's, as is often thought.

The 15-year study looked at nearly 80 women who were lesbian, bisexual or unlabeled.

North Texas women weigh in about the fluidity.

Plenty of pain with the gain

Australian researchers followed 2,000 pregnant women and evaluated them 21-years later and the ones that were overweight during pregnancy were 5x more likely to obese in two decades.

We interviewed a young mother who is in the 1st trimester of her second pregnancy and she said the only time she has been oveweight was after the birth of her first child. She was lucky and able to shed her pregnancy weight but many others aren't as lucky.

When it comes to excessive weight gain of any kind-there will be some pain.

Hot Enough?

The heat advisory for North Texas lingers, so parents looking to cool off at a spray park should know that there are new rules in place to make the experience safer.

In May, a new law took hold that requires spray parks to follow the same regulations as swimming pools when monitoring for cryptosporidium, a parasite.

Many hope the added precautions will prevent an outbreak like the one two years ago that sickened hundreds of people across the region.

Never stop learning

I haven't blogged much the last week or so because I've been learning--very slowly--some new internet duties and in the spirit of not getting home at midnight I just slacked off. What I've learned is not a 12-step process--think more along the lines of 212 steps. I thought I would never get it down but I have surprised even myself. What does all of this mean? Now when you click on my stories everything you see--from pictures that support the story to the copy is all me. I have to give credit where credit is due--all the video and editing comes courtesy of our crack photographers.

I wish I could have someone else to blame when things don't look quite right but that's what happens when you never stop learning.

Mother Strangles Her Children, Then Calls Police

It was such a somber scene in Irving, where police say a mother strangled her two children and then called police to say she had done something, "terrible".

No parent can imagine harming their own child and that is what makes covering a story like this so unfathomable. We have scene it before with the Andrea Yates of the world, claiming postpartum depression.

We will have to wait a see what the motive was for this 30-year old woman to harm her two toddlers. We do that as we shed a tear for these innocent victims.

Hot not-so-fun in the summertime

It must be tough being a kid in the internet age. Back in the pre-internet era kids either played outside or watched TV--now they can spend hours surfing the internet--that is until GetNoodles interrupts the fun.

GetNoodles is a new downloadable program that parents can set to interrup whatever kids are doing online every 5, 10, 15 minutes--it depends on how annoying mom or dad really wants to be. Here's the trick: The kids have to answer an age appropriate question--it can anything from learning a new language to math. If they answer the question they get go right back to whatever they were doing before they were interrupted--if they don't answer correctly--it's back to the drawing board until they get it right.

Back in pre-internet age that would have never happened--and it's a good thing because I'm still terrible at math.

Dallas man turns little regret into big website

It started with a quick run into a Dallas 7-Eleven.

Zagros Bigvand was running late for work.

On his way out, he stopped to hold the door for an older woman on her way in.

He held it, held it held it, for what felt like 10 minutes.  When he ran out of time, he let it go of the door before that woman reached had reached it.

He regretted it for the rest of the day.  That missed small gesture was the catalyst for what he says is now the largest website of its kind.

iGross: Smartphones are nasty

This just in: Smartphones are nasty and we have the culture dishes to prove it. We swabbed six smartphones and four of them came back with lots of bacteria--even E. coli. Yep. E. coli.

Here's the deal--we keep our phones in our pockets and purses next to nasty coins and whatever is buried at the bottom of a purse. Oh, then there are the elevator buttons and door knobs that we touch--and then we touch our phones. Just follow the germ trail all the way to the surface of your touch screen phone.

An infectious disease expert suggested treating your phone line an elevator button or door knob--wash your hands after touching them. Also, check the information supplied with your phone and find out how you can safely clean it without damaging it.

Who knew? iGross.
