That is the tough reality for millions of people with mental illnesses like major depression and bipolar disorder.

What that person might see as an angry expression could be a sad one or a neutral one.

It can lead to misunderstandings, fights and could be one of the reasons people with mental illnesses are at a higher risk of problems in relationships.

Two SMU researchers are trying to change that by conducting what is believed to a first of its kind study.
