Pole Dancing Popularity

Poles were made popular by strippers. There is no if, ands or butts about it.

But now dancing around the stick has gone mainstream. It's become a trendy alternative exercise enjoyed by moms and working professionals, among others.

Friday night at Lizard Lounge in Dallas, a first-of-its-kind competition will draw dozens of pole performers from around the state. They will be vying for cash prizes and bragging rights from out of 1st annual Miss Texas Pole Star.

Craving Cavities

A Dallas dentist is turning up the heat in his office.

Not only is Clint Herzog easy on the eyes, but his staff includes some young, good-looking women who may make patients crave a cavity and therefore another video to his office.

Herzog also serves beer and wine to patients who are a little nervous about being at the dentist.

Yes, and Halloween is right around the corner.

Just because it was hot and humid today, doesn't mean people shouldn't be thinking about seasonal flu vaccines. That's according to some North Texas medical professionals. Vaccines have already arrived in Dallas, for one, and people are already requesting them.

Dallas County is offering seasonal flu vaccines Monday at 8am. There is no priority group. Everyone is welcome and fees vary.

Choking Game

It's been "played" for decades. Generations of kids press on their necks or chests to temporarily cut off oxygen to the brain in order to get "high".

It's a cheap, easy alternative to drugs or alcohol and it's thought to have killed at least 82 children since 1995.

Many parents don't know the warning signs. It could be a belt or rope where it shouldn't be. It could be a group of kids coming out of a room with a groggy look, voice or flushed face.

Below are more warning signs and why experts recommend adults be diligent in talking to children.

College co-ed concerns

Women are at a risk of poor body image and eating disorders, according to recent research.

It looked at 127 women attending college for the first time and found more shame about their body image than those who didn't rush a sorority.

You know how that old saying ends, right? Me, too. But tonight I think a lot of America could be and should be reminded of that advice.

I interviewed Michelle Bombshell McGee this evening...the only tv reporter to do so on her visit to North Texas this weekend. C'mon, you know Bombshell. Or maybe you think you do. She's the heavily tattooed fetish model and stripper "credited" with breaking up the marriage of Sandra Bullock and Jesse James.

I like loud music and apparently the current crop of kids also likes loud music. A new study--which studies two studies--found that the number of kids suffering from hearing loss has jumped 30%. Kids we interviewed said they listen to their music at the highest volume possible and with those little ear-buds it can get pretty loud. One girl said she listens to her MP3 player for up to ten hours a day and by the time she unplugs--her ears are ringing.

A doctor told us today that temporary ringing is a signal to back off the volume.

One kid told me he's not concerned about hearing loss because he's confident technology will cure his problem when he gets older.

He's 16-years old and already has a hard time hearing--for his sake--I hope he's right.

That is the tough reality for millions of people with mental illnesses like major depression and bipolar disorder.

What that person might see as an angry expression could be a sad one or a neutral one.

It can lead to misunderstandings, fights and could be one of the reasons people with mental illnesses are at a higher risk of problems in relationships.

Two SMU researchers are trying to change that by conducting what is believed to a first of its kind study.

Fitness or too far?

That's a question swirling and twirling around North Texas tonight.

A DFW fitness and dance studio that offers pole dancing as part of its effort to empower, inspire and teach women to get fit is considering offering classes to children, using the pole.

They stress there would be nothing sexual in the classes, only fitness and fun. It's controversial, of course.

This just in: Smartphones are nasty and we have the culture dishes to prove it. We swabbed six smartphones and four of them came back with lots of bacteria--even E. coli. Yep. E. coli.

Here's the deal--we keep our phones in our pockets and purses next to nasty coins and whatever is buried at the bottom of a purse. Oh, then there are the elevator buttons and door knobs that we touch--and then we touch our phones. Just follow the germ trail all the way to the surface of your touch screen phone.

An infectious disease expert suggested treating your phone line an elevator button or door knob--wash your hands after touching them. Also, check the information supplied with your phone and find out how you can safely clean it without damaging it.

Dallas man turns little regret into big website

It started with a quick run into a Dallas 7-Eleven.

Zagros Bigvand was running late for work.

On his way out, he stopped to hold the door for an older woman on her way in.

He held it, held it held it, for what felt like 10 minutes. When he ran out of time, he let it go of the door before that woman reached had reached it.

He regretted it for the rest of the day. That missed small gesture was the catalyst for what he says is now the largest website of its kind.
