Travesty of Justice

What does TCU have to do in order to get a little love from the BCS? Despite beating UNLV 41 to nothing, improving to a perfect 8 - 0 on the season, The Frogs stayed at number six in the BCS rankings. I think it's a travesty but Frogs Head Coach, Gary Patterson is cool with it.

Today Coach Patterson said, "Why would you want it any different?" "Like I said earlier in the season, for some reason, if we're going to get this done, it's going to be the hard way. If we can pull it off, that's what's going to make it even more memorable."

The Frogs will square off against San Diego State, Saturday at 3 pm.

The Tarrant County Public Health department will offer free H1N1 vaccines to pregnant women and at-risk youth on Friday.

The vaccines will be available for pregnant women and children 6 months to 18 years. The clinic will be open from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at W.G. Thomas Coliseum, 6108 Broadway, in Haltom City.

Marc Flake, a spokesman for Tarrant County, said residents do not need to bring any medical records on Friday. Residents will have to fill out a simple questionnaire to receive the vaccine.

Health officials said the nasal mist and the injectable vaccines will be available on Friday.

The health department does not expect to use the 3,000 doses of the H1N1 vaccine that they have available. They are planning to hope more events once more vaccines arrive.

Flake said he does not know when that might be.

"It's like waiting for Christmas but not knowing the day," he said.

Burger anyone?

If you are looking for a cheap burger on Saturday, Kincaid's Hamburgers might be the best price in town.

The famous Fort Worth burger joint is rolling back prices to the 1960s. A half-pound burger, chips and a drink will cost a measly $2. Not bad, huh?

The only catch is the offer is only good at the Camp Bowie location from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Airport Surveillance

Does it surprise you that some U-S airports don't have surveillance systems? Grapevine Mills Mall has dozens of cameras that's are monitored by security staff 24-7, so why not our airports? Well this week the Transportation Security Administration announced it would be spending millions to do just that.
DFW and Love Field will get a combined 10 million for closed-circuit television cameras and recording devices. While both airports already had some surveillance the additional equipment will be a major step up.
DFW says it's already purchased most of it's new equipment while Dallas Love is still waiting for it's new upgrades.

ROAD FUNDS SPEED AWAY

Federal funds are more like a promise, every few years Washington allocates dollars for states to build roads, bridges and other highway projects, but don't run out and cash the check. This week after congress failed to eliminate a provision in a six-year national highway funding bill it was forced to take back some of that money, exactly $8,708,000,000 nationwide. That's $8.7 billion less in federal dollars to spend on badly needed  infrastructure.

California was at the top of the list loosing $800 (m) followed by Texas with $740 (m). TXDOT says it will impact future projects but unlike some states we didn't run out and spend all that loot, only about  $100(m). Here's the breakdown by Metros in Texas.

UNOBLIGATED BALANCES TO BE RESCINDED IN TEXAS

Austin 5,207,206.00
Corpus Christi 1,696,967.00
Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington 23,934,831.00
Denton-Lewisville 1,731,019.00
El Paso 3,743,892.00

Video: How to tell someone they sound like a racist

In your life, you are bound to have this conversation at least once. Most of the time it isn't a very pretty conversation, but you know that you need to have it.

With race dominating the news (here), it seemed like a good time to put this video on our blog. It's done by Jay Smooth (not sure if that's his real name or not) of Illdoctrine.com

It's pretty insightful.

Rahr Brewery sees surge in sales

Rahr Brewery can barely keep up with demand these days.

Sales jumped 71 percent this year as people opt to cut back on higher prices items and indulge on cheaper items, such as a six pack of beer.

"We certainly weren't expecting the growth that we've seen in 2009 as a result of that we are behind in our production," said General Manager Tony Formby.

The Cowtown Report

This is the first installment of The Cowtown Report. It might die in a week, but I hope to keep you informed of what's going on out West.

The Fort Worth City Council meet Tuesday and discussed a variety of issues. Here is a quick breakdown of what happened at City Council and around the city:

  • The city may look into raising its storm water fee 50 cents to offset the rising costs of trash pickup, but it likely would not go into effect until next October.
  • A Diversity Task Force has been developed to revamp the city's policies and educate employees. The City put the task force in place after the city became embroiled in the Rainbow Lounge incident.
  • The City released the names of the Fort Worth police officers involved in the Rainbow Lounge incident. One officer has been suspending more than once for previous violations. Fort Worth is set to release more names Wednesday.
  • The City Council unanimously approved a resolution to ask the U.S. Attorney to open an independent investigation into the Rainbow Lounge incident.
  • The Senate pulled the plug on the F-22 project.
Another quick item about the Rainbow Lounge. Fort Worth Police Chief Jeffrey Halstead expects to revamp the city's bar inspection policy in the next three weeks. The investigation into the officers' actions should be done in the next 21 days, he said.

More later...

Lockheed Martin workers left wondering after Senate vote

F-22 worker Dave Power saw the news all over workers' faces on Tuesday afternoon.

The Senate had voted to cut financing for seven additional F-22 warplanes from the defense spending bill Tuesday. The move left man workers wondering what the Senate's decision could mean for their own jobs.

"I don't have a crystal ball or something to tell them exactly what's going to happen," F-22 worker Dave Power said. "It certainly does take the hope away that they will have a job later on the future to rely on."

Authorities seize 496 dogs from Montague County dog kennel

Nearly 500 dogs were seized from a Bowie kennel this morning and taken to a temporary shelter in Fort Worth, authorities said.

The dogs -- 496 in all --  were seized by the Montague County Sheriff's Department and the Humane Society of North Texas early Tuesday morning from the Heddins Ranch and Kennel, said Sandy Grambort, a supervisor with the Humane Society.

"This is not a typical rescue. It is extremely large. Now we are in the midst of this -- one of the largest puppy situations that we have seen in many, many years."

Authorities were told by customers that the owners were not properly caring for the animals, and investigators with the Humane Society were able to verify those complaints.

North Texans rush to get Michael Jackson memorabilia

Michael Jackson popularity might have seemed like it waned over the last several years. There's no doubt now about Jackson's star power.

Within minutes of Michael Jackson's death, residents across the metroplex began searching for something that they could remember the King of Pop by.

For some, it was a vinyl. But for others, it was anything with his name or image on it.

At the Half Priced Books off Northwest Highway, Michael Jackson items flew off the shelves within 30 minutes. By the next morning, staff saw another wave of Jackson fans buy everything they could get their hands on.

Plano resident David Salas was among those searching for memorabilia on Friday. He woke up at 5 a.m. Friday to try to find anything with Jackson's face on it.

Fort Worth City Council approves resolution to lease part of Rosemont Park

Whether it be Fort Worth or Dallas, residents will always fight to keep green space.

Fort Worth residents did just that today, but they were unable to defeat a resolution that could lead to 1.5 acres of Rosemont Park in South Fort Worth being leased to Fort Worth ISD.

The land would be used for a new elementary school and a community center. In return, the school district would lease 6.7 acres nearby to the city for an additional park.
